How do you cancel a map update in Garmin Express? Downloading the files is going to take 20+ hours!

I need to find a better option.

Sounds like you are trying to do it over WiFi? Maybe a better solution would be to go to someone's home who has a wired connection. Then do your download there. I also learned that if you chose just to download to the GPS it is a faster download than to computer and device.

Or by any chance are you still using DIAL UP ???

If you have a laptop you can go to your local public library, coffee shop or restaurant (McDonalds) to get a quicker connection.

MiFi probably not best option

I don't know how much data you have on the Mifi plan, but a map update is HUGE! I full North America update is likely over 4GB even with compression. That's likely to put a serious dent in anyone's data plan. Even unlimited is only unlimited to a point.

Express should be able to resume download that wasn't finished when it connect again with Garmin server. So you can try to resume download and it should start from point it stopped.

If you don't have to worry about data transfer and only have slow connection you can allow Express to download in background. It will download maps and inform you when they are ready to install. To do this you have to activate option Schedule in Settings (Gear icon on top right main screen)

Just keep in mind, to make this work you have allow both options in Settings/General and on slow computer and slow internet connection it can slow down visibly your system.

May is the key word

Internet speed

What kind of internet speed do you have ? Type "INTERNET SPEED TEST" on the search bar of your internet select speak easy or any other one and check your internet speed. It will tell you your download/upload speed.

If you have TWC you can get 50mbps for about $40,00 a month. that's including free modem.

But 20 hours it seems too way long unless you have a dial up.

also disable temporarily AD_BLOCK-virus program, check what other programs are running on the beckground. and disable them.

type in the search bar.on your startup window MSCONFIG. select STARTUP and see what programs are running be sure you de-actived the one you do not need..

Yeh! ..... but lots to do in Canada while he's here.

I never use background download, but it should show "install" button whey you look at device status. If maps are downloaded update on device should start immediately. May someone, who is using background download explain how it looks like, please?

Basically you should be able to disconnect GPS any time until update on device starts. But once maps are being transferred to device DO NOT unplug GPS or you will make mess on it.

I feel your pain

had dial up, local library kept kicking me out when about half done. Then Hughes Net only had 10-15 gb so that was an all nighter during the 15 gb bonus at slow speeds. Last year went to Comcast, 25mps and 1 tb monthly for $39 per month. Saving over $250 per month by going to Comcast for Internet only, dropping Dish ($180), Hughes Net ($84)and Century land line phone ($50), now have Off Air and Netflix ($10) TV Oooma phone ($4 tax). Better TV, Phone and Internet and saving money

Fastest case...

Unplug the unit. That's what I'd do and start over from scratch.

It finally finished, but with a red bar saying the update failed.
The GPS seems to be working fine and it has map 2018.2. I think what failed was the installation to computer. I had to Install to computer again and it did another small download before that completed.

That certainly was way more aggravating than it should have been.

--
><> Glenn <>< Garmin nüvi 2598

Well ...

... with a good broadband connection it generally works fine, but Express (Garmin) can have issues otherwise. I've just checked to remind myself what the Express requirements are and notice it now says may require up to 20Gb of free disk space, previously it said 13Gb

•Windows 7 SP1 or newer, Microsoft .NET 4.5 (included)
•1024 x 768 display, USB port and 1 GB RAM
•High speed Internet access (Not for use with dial-up, mobile or satellite connections)
•May require up to 20 GB free disk space

gdfaini wrote:

No other members running Garmin Express have reported this condition. If you really have a high speed connection, there is something wrong with either the computer software or hardware, or the router.

Try a speed test:

dobs108 smile

A better speed test is

A better speed test is http://speedof.me/ because it uses HTML 5. Verizon and most of the others use a Java based test and it has an overhead that causes inaccurate speeds. You can compare readings from several tests.

And just as a reference, I have a 10mb cable connection and while GE reports a couple hours initially, it usually finishes in less than two hours, and this includes installing on the computer. The slow down point is the USB connection to the GPS. USB2 is a major slowdown for GE passing data back and forth for installation work.

Thanks for the speed test link.

phranc has brought up an important point. As maps are getting ever-larger, when will Garmin offer a USB3 connection, or will they rely on WiFi?

dobs108 smile

Don't

Don't hold your breath waiting for USB3 support on your Garmin Automotive GPS. Garmin may have been near the bottom of the list of companies that switched from USB 1 to USB2 back some years ago.

With some of their new models now offering Wi-Fi update support, my guess is that's the direction they will be going in the future.

I tend to agree with the wifi direction. More than likely, mediocre speed wifi radio chips are cheaper, in the long run, than USB3 and associated software will be, for a good while. For those that argue no accessibility to wifi there is still the USB2 connection.

If slow USB is causing you grief, there is always cloning to a SD card reader to alleviate that issue. However, I think slow download of the huge map update files is the main problem. The slow USB transfer is just an aggravation.

My problem isn't USB

Once it finished downloading it copied the maps pretty quickly.

My problem was that GE didn't download everything when it was connected to high speed for 3 days, so when I went home to do the installation it took forever complete the download over MiFi.

Next time I'll have to do the actual installations when I'm connected to high speed.

USB 1.1

As Mr jgermann says, "Back-up,Back-up,Back-up" I always do so before a new map update & it's quite long with a unit that has a USB 1.1 (+- 60 minutes)

Downloading the actual map & installing it via the clone method is thankfully very quick smile

I posted the actual times in a previous thread & consider that I have a "standard" computer using Windows 7 along with "regular" high speed internet.

Comparing your download time with mine in considering the specs of your high speed internet package should give you a fairly good idea how long it should take.

This is/was the problem all! gdfaini was NEVER connected by a High Speed connection but via a MiFi which is a glorified cell phone internet connection and certainly not intended to download large GB files. A bit of surfing maybe, emails and that's it.

MiFi- WiFi same thing. OLD saying. You cannot make a silk purse from a pigs ear.

Not so

I was directly connected to high speed cable at my brothers house for 3 days. I had GE set to download updates in the background, but GE only downloaded about 3GB of data.

I installed the maps on my 1390 while there but couldn't install the maps on my wife's until I got home.

Why it didn't download everything it needed when it could is beyond me. It shouldn't have had to download anything over my slow MiFi connection.

and what model it was, and whether it needed the JCV file, and whether it needed the DEM map file, and whether it needs the voice ASR files, and a butch of other files that are needed on some units and not on others.

Also, if I had a Nuvi that didn't need a few GB of files that other models had to have, why would I want to eat up my internet download quota downloading them? That's why GE only downloads the files it needs for the device that's attached to computer at the time.

One other thing - what is "downloading the map update in the background" mean? I download a map update using GE and while it's downloading I go off and do other things on my computer. Is that what we are talking about or am I missing the point? I do know I can have GE always "running" in the background but to me that's not downloading the map update in the background.
