Converting CSV to GPX

Looks like I'm figuring out much of what my Garmin 660 can do and just in time to help my father with his 265 which gets delivered this week from Amazon.

We both use Mac and PC computers. We prefer the Mac and we've downloaded all the applications we need for the Garmin POI loader and Road Trip application. However, I tried to use the Road Trip application to import a CSV file and it couldn't. Turns out, I need a CSV to GPX convert application, or so it seems.

I've seen some postings on here about that and debated between the Mac or Garmin forum for this. I figured I'd get more response here in this forum. Is there any program, hopefully for a Mac, that can convert CSV to GPX?

Also is there a benefit to GPX over GDB files? What's the difference and should we be working in one format over another one?

Thanks for the help everyone. You've been a tremendous asset for us.

For Windows

Extra_POI_Editor is one excellent program, and is mentioned here frequently:

I use it a lot and am constantly amazed at how well it does things. I think it is for Windows only.

Try This one

Look at this link: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1045

I downloaded it and it works great.

I have also downloaded the turbocc poi editor. It is really neat. I am still learning with it, but so far it looks great.

Extra poieditor is a nice

Extra poieditor is a nice program especially for gpx files or you can save as csv files. One feature I really like is when you download a file to it and save as a gpx file you can set the proximity alert for every custom poi you have in that file.Just go to edit and replace field. In field name use the down arrow and select proximity and put in number of feet for new field value then click replace all.It will give that setting for all the pois. This will elimate you having to use manual mode all the time for poiloader.

CSV vs GPX files

I can't comment on Mac vs PC computers, I've never used a Mac. However CSV (Comma Separated Values) files are basic simple text files that any spreadsheet program or text editor can handle. While GPX files are more complicated and you need a program written especially for GPX files to write or modify them. I'm not familiar with GDB files.

CSV files will have the POI's location coordinates, name and a short description a few lines long. That's all. GPX files will also have that information and can also contain information like addresses, phone numbers, notes on the POI that are not limited (at least I haven't found a limit) in length, links to pictures or sounds that will play or display as you approach the POI. You can also set either a proximity alert and/or a speed alert for each entry. POI's that are in the GPX format display differently with more info on my 750 while searching custom POI's.

There are several programs for PC's that will import CSV or GPX files and convert between the two formats. I would bet that most those programs are available for Mac computers as well. The program I prefer is GeePeeEX but it isn't free. Converting from CSV to GPX will not add information to the GPX file that wasn't already in the CSV file but it will open up the file so that you can add more info.

I hope this helps.

Extra POI

I used this a few years ago under Windows 7 & 8. It was an excellent program. However, now under Windows 10, it does not seem to work. I did install it and when i run it, it sits minimized on my taskbar and will not open.

Any suggestions?

I haven't tried this in Windows 10, but compatibility mode might work. Right-Click the icon that starts EPE. Click on Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab. Check the box "Run this program in Compatibility Mode" and choose which version of Windows you think EPE will run on.

I've just updated to Microsofts newest offering of W 10 and no problems running EPE.

I have the same problem on one of my Windows 7 machines, worked fine then all of a sudden it stopped.

.

Try running it as XP, or Win 7. It usually works.

edit - Oops, I see dobs108 has already suggested compatibility mode.
