NUVI2555LMT Just Died

My 2555 was working perfectly fine all day. I unplugged it and then had a need to use it about 10 minutes later and it was totally dead. Would not start, screen blank. The unit was plugged into the truck lighter socket.

I used the proper power supply and also plugged it in with the USB port on my computer and have no response.

I see 4 tiny screws in back and I was wondering id there might be a fuse that has blown as a result of a power spike.

Any ideas, or is this time to buy another one?

Before

Before you do anything to drastic, press and HOLD the power button for up to 2 or 3 minutes (if needed). This will often bring what appears to be a dead Nuvi back to life.

.

No fuse that I am aware of. Have you tried to press and hold the power button? Sometimes that will force a locked device to power on or off. If you do take the unit apart, you might try unplugging and replugging in the battery. Again, that will sometimes force a power off restart.

Good luck ... hope you get it to work.

Edit: Rick beat me to it (again) smile

Perfect. I tried that and it started. I'd held it for quite awhile before, but it seemed to want a bit more foreplay, before it would turn on.

Thanks.

It must have gone to full shut down, despite the fact that I didn't force it into that mode. Maybe a spike, but no way to tell. It took quite s bit longer than normal to wake it up, which is what threw me a curve.

I had similar situation

I was traveling with my gps one giving directions. I arrived and removed my
Gps from the dashboard for about 3 hours. I did plug the godwits the same power cord and did not turn on. I pressed the power bottom but did not turn on. I waited for a while and pressed power for some time and turned on. I thought that could be the inside the car was to hot. Now works well so far.

That's a VERY good into to be aware of. Thanks!

2460 LMT with BC-30

I was backing up and the 2460 had the reverse image from the BC-30.

The image locked up and would not revert back to the map UI. Had to remove the power cord and hold down the power button to reboot the nuvi.

All good!

Glad

Glad you got it working again

My Experience With A Dead Battery

Not having using my Nuvi 2460LMT for a very long time I used it for a route I had in my favorites.
It was plugged into my cigarette lighter socket and displayed the satellites, as well as the route.
Within a few minutes the screen went black never to turn on again. I thought it was simply a hardware failure.

When I got home I tried plugging into my computer and it would not turn on or recognize the GPS.
I then used my wall charger and it did turn on and I let it charge for several hours and discovered It was charging although still not fully charged I was able to use it. I then tried it plugged it into my vehicle and it worked again.

It now works properly and is holding a charge. I believe the battery was so weak that it would not even function and could not complete my route while trying to charge the GPS at the same time. I never experienced that before and hope it never happens again.

Prevention

I rarely use my units except when going on holidays but I do use them once a month from work to home (35 minute drive) to keep the battery charged.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure smile

You are correct muell9k as I have observed this behavior many times in my nuvi 855 which by default goes into sleep mode and completely drains the battery since I seldom use it any more. Sometimes I have to charge it for an hour before it will turn on. And unfortunately, replacing the battery is not an option on this model (no longer available).

By the way, it is wonderful to see you back online. I hope things are going well with your recovery.

Hello Alandb

My recovery from the stroke is making some progress even after 5 months of therapy. I remain optimistic that some day many of the skills I lost will return.

My Nuvi 2460 does not have a sleep mode. However, occasionally I did notice for some reason when I disconnect the Nuvi from the car it may not be shutting down completely even though I wait for the timer to complete. I got into the habit of disconnecting the Nuvi from the power then turn it back on and let it boot. I then confirm it booted properly and shows the battery is fully charged and then turn it off.

Since this has never happened before I suspect the battery has depleted so severely from lack of use that it wouldn’t turn on at all.
Thank God I have a 110v OEM Garmin wall charger since that was able to charge the Nuvi, otherwise the PC;s USB cable or the 12V
charger would not work. I will have to monitor the battery life on the 2460 and possibly change it if it can longer hold a charge.

I realize your 855 battery can’t be replaced any longer, many owners of the 855’s report they can’t find a replacement battery anywhere.

It is very likely that the USB plug on the back of the GPS unit as broken off the circuit board inside. The connections are very small inside and after multiple connecting and disconnected the USB cable the connector will break loose inside. You will need to find someone that can resolder this connector. You need to open the unit to access the connector. I did mine using a microscope and a very fine soldering iron. I am a retired electronics guy and have experience in soldering very small devices. Can you find someone like that?
