Move Streetpilot 2720 from Old XP Machine to Win 10 Laptop?

I have Streetpilot 2720 that I've had since new and it still works fine, except for the remote. The maps, data, etc. are located on my old XP laptop. I'd purchased lifetime maps sometime ago, and I'd like to have the data, maps, etc., moved to my Windows 10 machine. If able to do this, checking for updates, etc., would be more convenient. I'd read about Javawa, and that's clear as mud for me. I've noticed that when I plug the 2720 in to the Win 10 machine, it does not show up in file explorer (sounds like it's not recognized, though device manager sees a Garmin USB device). Is there any hope at all? If there is a solution, I'm gonna need a very clear & deliberate set of step by step instructions (reading posts re: javawa made my head spin).

Greatly appreciate your input!

garmin express

Start by installing Garmin Express on the PC. Go to this link and follow the instructions:

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

Connect the GPS to the PC first and then download and install Garmin Express. It should detect the GPS, install Garmin USB drivers, and make it possible to update the software or view its folders in Windows Explorer.

Since you have lifetime maps, Garmin Express should recognize the GPS and allow a map update. The map can be installed by Garmin Express both onboard the GPS and also on the new PC. This gets you the latest map - no sense in copying the map on the laptop.

Thanks very much Dobs. This

Thanks very much Dobs.

This partially worked, and I was pleasantly surprised! Garmin Express told me I needed to use Map Installer(I think that's right). MI told me there wasn't enough space for the entire update (experienced this before), and that I could download a portion of the new map, save it to both GPS & computer, and later try to add additional areas to GPS. Well, it did load to the GPS, but would not save to computer (plenty of room there). Wondering if that's because the GPS was initially set up on another machine. I may try to go through the process again, only this time install only to computer (assuming the latest map remains on the Streetpilot). Will appreciate your thoughts on this.

Sure was glad Garmin Express recognized my device and that I had an (lifetime) update available.

Thanks very much.

I am glad that you were able to install Garmin Express and MapInstall and that the PC recognized the 2720. That is a big step forward!

The Streetpilot 2720 does not have an SD card slot so there is no way to add to the memory. In the years since the 2720 was new, the maps have greatly increased in size. (The size of memory the map takes up) There is no other choice but to select a map area that will fit in the limited memory of the GPS by using MapInstall.

Being set up originally on the old computer has nothing to do with the map update now.

You can certainly run MapInstall again to save the entire map to the PC. Since you have lifetime maps, the same map can be downloaded again and again. Be sure the 2720 is connected to the PC. That shows the Garmin site that you deserve another map download, even though it is now going only to the PC and not the GPS.

Well ...

... I think you meant use Express to install the complete map to the PC? MapInstall moves maps from the PC to the device.

That is incorrect! You would run Garmin Express to save the entire map to the PC. Be sure to connect the GPS to the PC to do this. Thanks to sussamb!
