Rand McNally - Loading POI Files on The RV Tablet 80

The new RM Tablets do not use the Dock software. Here are the instructions for loading POI files to the tablet.
Manual process is as follows:
Connect your tablet to your computer.
Find the related drive for the tablet and open the RVT80 Tablet drive.
Then, open up the internal storage.
Find the .Navi folder and open it.
Then find the RM folder, and open it.
In this folder, create a new folder and name the folder exactly how I describe: ImportPOI (make sure the caps are there)
Now, open the ImportPOI folder.
Find your .csv POI set.
Drag and drop your Custom POI set into your newly created ImportPOI folder.
Close out all boxes, and disconnect your tablet.
Connect your tablet to power.(may not be required)
Slide your finger down from the top left side of your tablet and click to close the RV GPS app. (We need to close the app out entirely so that when we re-open it we are prompt with an import POI screen)
Open up RV GPS app, and you should be welcomed with an Import POI screen set. Click Import.
Once successfully imported, Click choose destination, Points of Interest, Custom POI(down below), and we should have Custom POI file shown right there!

straightforward

This seems straightforward enough. However, I would make a full backup of the RM before mucking about in the folders.

Can we assume that after deleting the POI file, the next time the RM is booted up the POIs will be gone? Can multiple POI files be loaded? If so would categories be created? Is this limited to .csv files?

Answers

These instructions came from RM Support. I have only done this once so far, but I did load multiple files at one time and it worked as advertized. I used .csv files as required by RM.

a. ImportAlert
i. IE – Red Light cameras, etc.
ii. Will only announce Alert.

i. IE – POI’s.
ii. Will announce what you put in columns after the Lat/Long.
15. Copy your .CSV file(s) into the folder you desire in step 15.

IMPORTING POI’S ON TO A TABLET
MK 03/08/2016
28. Open this file to see the “failed” record(s).
(Sample) - Record not imported: ,,"AMBASSADOR BRIDGE/DETROIT, MI",US 313-443-0368,"24 HRS, NO HAZMAT, NEXUS"
29. Look at your .CSV database and compare the failed record to the ones that imported correctly. Usually it is missing spaces, formatting not correct, or in the “Sample” the Long/Lat are missing, by the two Commas’ at the beginning.
30. Normally I import each .CSV by themselves till all records import correctly. For Example –
a. Import one .CSV by itself till all records import correctly.
b. Delete the RM/User/MyCustomPOI.db.
c. Import the next .CSV by itself till all records import correctly.
d. Delete the RM/User/MyCustomPOI.db.
e. Etc, etc
31. Once all your .CSV’s import correctly Delete the RM/User/MyCustomPOI.db.
32. Now move all your .CSV’s into the correct ImportPOI or ImportAlert folder and follow step 17-25.

Looks confusing as heck but

Looks confusing as heck but it all boils down to a few steps. Turn the tablet USB Storage to "ON" make the two folders and copy your files to the folder you want. Then turn off USB storage and open the GPS app.

I'm guessing the two might be identical Trucker Tablet & RV Tablet.

I made two folders. I put my Red Light camera file in the "Alert" folder ( Step 14 ) so it alerts you when you approach the intersection. If you put it in the POI folder it will alert you when you are in the area. Not want you want when you are not even on that street..

I also have Low Viaduct clearance alerts in my "Alert Folder"

Things I would put in the POI folder might be sight seeing location or the like.

Rand McNally - Loading POI Files on the RV Tablet 80

Thanks for these detailed instructions. Very helpful. Why don't they put this in their manual or on their website?

RM RV80

I just purchased it and looking forward to learning more about it. Uploading POI seems great to me. My wife and I would like to tour the PNW and discover Hot Springs along the way. Thank you.

Thank You

I was trying to figure this out without calling Tech Support.

Rand McNally csv format

8 fields:: longitude#, lattitude#, name#, telephone#@, address@, state@, postcode@, country@

first four are the same as garmin(#),
last five, have to be there, aren't neccessary to be filled(@)
(edit, I know the field name of column four isn't the same, its a text field it don't actually do nuttn and can be empty in both gps types)

to make garmin formatted (4 column) csv work in RM

open file in spreadsheet, make a space in columns e-h in the first row, copy to every other row, save as .csv

or,
open file in notepad (any non formatting text editor) add the following to the end of every line commas included

," "," "," "," "
save as csv

or
open file in EPE, set m to 8 (Options : M-column csv fields), save as "m column" csv
edit: if a person sets this EPE option every later save as m-column matches RM

each way creates the required number of fields

I dunno why I answered a real old post either
