2016 Chrysler with built in Garmin NAV

I would never have bought a built in navigation unit but the car was a pretty good deal and the nav unit was already part of the package. Garmin needs to offer a lifetime update for the built in nav units. The manual says you can only update the maps once a year and currently the cost is $149. My Garmin Nuvi1300 with lifetime maps is going strong and I do updates every quarter. The built-in nav units are outdated from the time you drive them off the lot.

I just

I just bought a 2016 Chev Equinox LTD that came with a built in Nav system. The navigation system came with the latest maps installed, which unfortunately are from mid 2015 and when the next update is released, GM wants $169 plus shipping which in Canada is another $30. Don't need to tell you my 3597LMTHD isn't going on the shelf anytime soon.

If they are going to keep

If they are going to keep selling NAV units, Garmin or otherwise they have to address the issue of map updates. Apple CarPlay and Android auto will eventually make the obsolete. I was test driving a Prius last weekend for a few days and I was still using Waze on my smart phone. Didn't bother with the built in Nav. Proprietary systems are so 1990's.

Nah.

It is only a handful of us enthusiasts on forums like this that know the difference. The masses will just pay what they charge or never update. Most people don't care.

And To Top It Off!!!

At some point in the future, (likely 5-7 years), the map updates for your car aren't available any more so your left with a nav system where the maps constantly become more and more out of date! sad

Don't think that you'll be able to get that update, if you want it, yearly. My 2013 Jeep (Chrysler product) didn't get a map update until late summer 2015 and that mapset appeared to be from early 2014.

I live in a very built up area, have rarely noticed any difference from one update to another in the many many years I've been using a GPS.

... just like on other special niche forums, forums users are up in arms about stuff most non forum users haven't a clue about.

Chrysler in dash navigation unit

I purchased a 2015 Chrysler 200c and the salesman kept talking about the built in Garmin. When I attempted to update the maps and add my POI's, I discovered it is NOT a Garmin supported navigation system. It is part of Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep UConnect system and supported by them. The best I can tell are the maps are at least ten years out of date.

The large screen makes a good spot to place my suction cup Garmin mount.

updates

Problem with updates for built-in units are from fact, that they are not serviced directly by Garmin but by car manufacturer. So he is responsible for all updates for maps and units software. And probably for costs reasons they are not ordering newest maps. How many people will update maps that cost as much per update as standalone system?

Basically it's same problem like with maps update for Garmin units. Garmin is always somehow behind with newest updates if you compare Garmin maps to those provided by Here.

The maps Garmin gets from HERE don't just show up at their reception desk one day in a Fedex envelope and are ready for download to your Garmin GPS the next day. There is a lot of work that needs to happen to the HERE supplied maps and there are lots of things that Garmin needs to do with their data, including testing, when incorporated with HERE's before the update is installed on a Garmin sever. At that point more testing is needed and then they release the update for download. All that takes time, time that HERE can spend loading new data to their website. The result - HERE maps will always be ahead of Garmin's released map update.

In the good old days of a single map update a year or even with 2 updates a year, the general rule was that the Garmin maps would be about 6 to 9 months behind the latest HERE version (Navteq in those days). I suspect that Garmin's released maps and HERE's latest version aren't 6 months apart anymore.

wonder

if these built in units also cheat emissions from the main screen...(joke)

that's all fine and dandy

but it's always been odd to me when say a mall that was new in 1998, still doesn't appear on the "latest" map, yet it's in a metropolitan area that is the 6th largest in the nation. And then when you go to google maps, whaddya know, it's there...maybe they should use UPS instead of FedEx and get a better receptionist.

The vehicle we bought in

The vehicle we bought in 2009 came with GPS. I asked about map updates and the salesman said they would download automatically from the satellite. He assured me that the GPS would always have current maps. Of course, none of this happens. After taking delivery and discovering the maps were 2 years outdated, the dealership agreed to purchase a $229 map update for us to install and then reeducated the salesman about GPS equipment in vehicles.

I hope...

...they took that $229 out of his paycheck! I wonder how the salesman came up with the idea that map updates were automatic?

Paulie: The salesman

Paulie:

The salesman probably made it up on the spot. Another thing he told us was about the Sirius TV package that came with the vehicle. Sirius TV was only offering 4 kids channels at the time but he mentioned to us, I'm sure as a selling point, that soon we would also be able to receive adult channels. I am sure he didn't mean what most people think of when they hear adult channels. I don't even know if Sirius offers any TV programming anymore. We never renewed the subscription in 2010.
