garmin frozen?? (how do I reset?)

Look near the SN # and press the reset button.

My 660 has frozen in the past and most of the time just power off works. In one case I had to reset.

Guys - you are a lifesaver - here am I stuck on the a16 on northern france and the garmin nuvi 250w just locks up - freezes - can't turn off, won't do anything - and I am tryng to find an obscure town in the loire on a deadline. No obvious reset button but as you point out it is there, located on back of unit under the serial number label (and actually marked "reset" - but in such an unintuitive place you'd easily overlook it).

Just wanted to post to say thanks to the world wide web and the magic of handheld internet devices - I'm on my way again.

I am just curious, was it really hot when your nuvi froze? I have a nuvi 680 and while driving in Arizona, it just froze. It wouldn't power off or anything. When I pulled out the power adapter, nothing, I guess it just went into battery mode, but it was still frozen. I found the reset button and when I pushed it, the nuvi powered down. Then I let it cool off and restarted it. No problems. I am wondering if it just got too hot. Anyway what good is the unit if it gets too hot on the dash!

Tried that- no help. Just happened to try using the unit last week and somehow it started working for a few days, but now touchscreen stopped working again. If I leave it on in the vehicle anyway,stuck on initial screen it still responds with voice traffic warnings, but I can't enter any commands.

Me too....but she still seems to work overall. When new, it would just turn off for no reason....maybe time for a $178 780! lol

Looking at the manual under troubleshooting you may want to try to re-calibrate the screen.

1.Turn unit off.
2.Press and hold the power button for one minute until calibration screen appears.
3.Follow the on screen instructions.

Can't get to the recalibration screen that way with the 680. I once got to that screen ( no idea how) but the touchscreen is dead so it would not react to me touching the dots.

I am experiencing the same problems with the Nuvi 650. I tried to use the reset button on the back of my 650 with NO results. Then tried to hold down the ON button for one minute and NO recalibration screen came up. I also tried to connect my 650 to my computer so that I could dump the map update that preceded the freezing problem and the 650 would not mount on my computer.
Very frustrating!

I just did a quick search on Gary Hayman site and found the following :

For the 600 series Touch Wrench > Display, then select Touch Screen—recalibrates (or realigns) the touch to respond properly. Touch Recalibrate and then follow the directions.

I replied to your post earlier this evening, indicating that I had a similar problem with my Nuvi 650 and had tried severl "fixes". I found another post that said to do a HARD RESET and it worked. To do a hard reset just put your finger up on upper right-hand corner of the screen and then turn the unit on. Hold both the finger on the screen AND the on button for at least a minute and then shut down the unit and see if that works for you. I solved my problems!!

canuk's solution worked for me, the others didn't.

I had to hit recalibrate twice to get that screen up, first time it went to another screen, I hit the back button and then recalibrate again and the recalibration screen came up, went through the process and it was fixed.

I have tried all the above suggestions and still the screen is frozen. Any other suggestions? One thing I saw was that the Gupdate.gcd file cannot be opened when I follow the Garmin website directions.

As you all have noticed, Garmin has several different ways to reset.
On my 370 a COMPLETE reset (not mentioned in the manual) is:
HIT reset and when done then turn it off.
With finger pressing the right top of the screen turn it on. It worked for me.

On my 265wt I slide the power button to the left with the screen facing me and hold it for several seconds.

Thank you kurzemnieks and Panama. I tried both suggestions and its still frozen. Actually it was difficult to slide the power button to the left but I did as much as possible.

hook up the nuvi unit to the computer hold on off switch to off hold a few seconds and release it
and have garmin tech guide you
it worked with my Nuvi 780 and came back to life.

I appreciate these type of instructions and guidelines for the beginner and sometimes it useful fr professionals as well.custom logo design ,What a utilization of tools and effects you did, It's really amazing work,

turn the unit off and hold the switch for 8 seconds.
Turn it back on while pressing on the bottom right of the screen.
If it ask you to delete all data then tell it no.

On my Garmin Nuvi 40LM. it froze with the Garmin Logo right after update. No reset button that I could see anywhere. holding on Power button didn't unfreeze. I had a memory card inserted on the GPS that it may used, or maybe didn't use. I pulled the memory card, and immediately restarted
