Street Pilot III and map question.

I picked up a used Street Pilot III with City Navigator V4.01 and V5 update CD at a flea market and a bunch of extras came with it. I plan to use it with APRS. Maps are to old for navigation.

I called Garmin to transfer the unit and codes to my name. I had to wait a week for them to contact the other person but its now in my name.

After it was transfer I saw the unlock codes for City Navigator 4.01 and City Navigator North America V8 on myGarmin page.

I installed 4.01 and I'm able to use the one unlock code and sent maps to the Street Pilot. I installed the other upgrade map CD I received which was v5. It asks for the unlock code. The previous code does not work. How do you get a unlock code for V5 since I have the CD?

Also since I have unlock code is on myGarmin for V8 will I be able to use that code if I pick up a V8 CD somewhere?

This works a lot different then the lifetime maps on my Nuvi

Possible Solutions:

I’m not sure why you would want data from old versions of City Navigator when you plan to use the unit with APRS. There have been many new street names added in recent years due to the E 911 laws.

Since these versions of City Navigator are so old, I found that Garmin is sometimes willing to work with you on the problem. It’s worth a call anyway.

It was the hassle you are going through with Garmin’s old map unlock system that caused me to sell my Street Pilot III several years ago. During the last year or so I owned the unit, I downloaded free, legal rout-able maps from websites like:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/

and installed them using Garmin’s Mapinstall program:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291

However, the proprietary 28MB, 56MB or 128MB data cards used by the Street Pilot III limit the size of the map product you can use.

There are bootleg programs available on the web that will generate unlock codes using the map product ID and unit ID. Be advised that POI Factory does not condone the use of this type of software since it violates Garmin copyrights and is illegal. I won’t post any links to these sites so you are on your own here.

Street Pilot III and map question.

I wanted newer maps but my Nuvi with current maps will not work with APRS. The price was right on the Street Pilot so I picked it up.

I did not know files at gpsfiledepot will work with the Street Pilot. I will check them out and see if they have something that may work. It would be nice to have a map with up to date roads

Yes the unlock codes are a pain. Garmin said they no longer support the product so there wasn't much they could do with newer maps.

Thanks.
