2016 mapupdate

What am I doing wrong? trying to updated to mapupdateto 2016. Have the latest Garmin Express 4.0.20. Express is telling me that it can't install to device, nuvi 2557, have to use Mapinstall. Go to mapinstall and 2016 is not shown. I hope I've given enough info that some one out there can help?

latest GE

Latest GE is 4.1.5

More info

As suggested, first update to the latest Garmin Express and see if that helps.

What computer are you using for the update? If the computer is running the old Windows XP, Garmin Express won't work and you'll need to use GarminMapUpdater.

MapInstall will only work for you if the map is already installed on your computer. Since the 2016 map is not on your computer, MapInstall won't offer that map to transfer to your nuvi. Also, even if the map is installed to the computer and transferred to your nuvi with MapInstall, you won't receive the features like Junction View. Therefore, you really want to use either Garmin Express (the current version) or GarminMapUpdater, not MapInstall.

If you use your current Garmin Express to check for Updates and the latest version isn't offered, then install Garmin Express fresh from the Garmin web site:

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/express.html

Good luck and please report back with your results.

Correct advice ... Update Express.

CraigW's advice is correct. You need to update to the current version of Garmin Express. This error has been noted over on the Garmin software forums for some 25xx devices with the older version of Express. The bug has been fixed in the latest version. Here is a thread over at Garmin for your reference: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?316697-Nuvi-2595-Ex...

Incidentally, I think the message you received said to use Garmin MapUpdater, not MapInstall. But again, that is not necessary if you have the latest version of Express.

I had been thinking along those lines too

I also wondered if MapUpdater was suggested in the error message.

Assuming the new Garmin Express works, then all is well. The only snag I see is if the OP is running Windows XP in which case GarminMapUpdater must be used since the new Garmin Express won't install on XP.

I liked reading the Garmin Forum link. I'm glad we have folks here like alandb who also monitor other web sites for info like this! wink

All this happened since I

All this happened since I updated to win 10, then rolled back to previous IOS Win 7. Tried to reinstall Garmin Express, it says that it cannot find ExpressInstall.msi! And finally it tells me to contact tech support.FYI contrary to what I stated earlier, I don't have Express 4.0.20, it's 4.0.15 and as I said won't allow me to upgrade

Garmin—or maybe Microsoft—to the rescue!

Here's the fix:

Note that you will need to run the fix program up to five times, once for each of the items.

I had to do this once. It was pretty straightforward and once done, I could install the latest Garmin Express (currently version 4.1.5.0 for PCs).

Good luck. Tell us how it turns out.

Note: The Microsoft fix program will work with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1 and more, but will not run at this time on Windows 10.

Thanks a bunch. It did the trick and I was able to update maps 2016.I want to thank all who helped out on this.Fortunately I don't have that many problems, but if I do I know where to go!The tech know how here is great. Again thanks a million to all.

Garmin says "MapInstall".

Works

Just loaded the new updater on a Win 7 machine - it loaded 2016.10 and other updates in an hour with no problems.

Yes, MapInstall is what's needed given the situation described in the Garmin faq. But given the OP's nuvi's ability to install the full map to the nuvi memory, alandb and I were thinking more along the lines of the problem that occurs when Garmin Express can't do the update where Garmin suggests using GarminMapUpdater instead. I could be wrong, though.

But without the 2016 map installed to the computer, MapInstall will offer no help in updating a nuvi to 2016.

Great!
