Here Navigation

The topic of Here Navigation was posted on thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44232 on the Viago discussion.

Wanted to start this new thread on Here Navigation for discussion. So not to distract from the Viago topic.

I downloaded Here just to see what it would do.I was impress with all the free features including the off line maps. See https://help.here.com/en/android/hereapp#g270 and scroll down to the topics and review them.t Just to see what it offers in this Android Apk.

The short trip I tried it on it preformed well.Had the get street name instructions. If you download the HIFI voice and not the regular one you will get the street names.Showed speed limit for main roads on screen.

To download the maps you have lots of selections.Be sure to go to settings first after installing the Apk.Select storage memory the put mark in exSDCard to save to SD Card.

Collections is where you can put your favorites. Option there to make new folders that you may prefer to organize them.

For those who want the warning for going over speed limit. It is there under speed alerts. While driving the alert went off on me going 47 in a 45.At first didn't know what is was.Sounded like my school zone alert on my Nuvi 2597.Look on the screen and saw that the speed limit was now in red.

Lot of things on this Apk that I need to explore and hopefully others will post comments.

We know about this issue, which happens with some previous versions of the HERE app.

Please make sure you’ve got version 1.0.220 or higher installed. If the version on your phone is earlier than that, go to the Google Play Store or to the Samsung Store to download the latest version of the HERE app.

UPDATE: The voice options seem to have disappeared

gerrydrake wrote:

Where do you find the HI FI voice option. I can't find it anywhere in HERE.

I checked both my Galaxy S4 and Note 8.0 tablet and find that when I go to settings and then voice options it shows the ones I have downloaded including the HD ones but when I choose to add more voice options it just stays on the screen showing the ones I already have and no longer goes to the voice option screen.

I sent a feedback to HERE asking why the option to install more voices disappeared after the last app update. I will post if they respond with a fix.

Update:
This is a direct quote from the HERE help page in the getting driving directions section:

"The hi-fi guidance voices are gone. What happened to them?

We had to remove many of the voice files that were previously available for use with the HERE app. Unfortunately, this affected all of the hi-fi voice files, which we can no longer offer to our customers."

I have version 1.1.490 wk22 and there are no longer any voice options when I try to add voices under settings. They now state in the here help area that they had to remove all the HD voices and could no longer offer them but now there are no standard ones either.

All that is left are the two HD voices I had already downloaded and installed.

Same here on that. Glad I got the voices when I did.

I have 1.1.490 wk 22

I never downloaded the HD voice. I have English (US) Female, Hi-fi
The only other US voice is Male, 3.6 MB on mine

Was the HD voice better? Mine sounds a little tinny.
I guess it's too late to be asking this. redface

After exchanging emails with the HERE support staff and trying something for them they requested the standard voice download options are now available again but no longer any HD voice options. No reinstall was necessary to correct the problem if anyone else was seeing the same thing as I was and the HD voices I had already installed are still there and are useable. I had found the standard voices to be tinny sounding also and will see if the standard voice now available has improved.

I went to settings and switched storage option to internal memory and then when I hit the manage voices the standard voice options are now showing as they did before, I then went to settings and selected the SD card option and after the app restarted I can now see the standard voice options when I select manage voices. No reinstall was necessary to correct the problem just switching from SD card storage to Internal storage and then switching back to SD card storage.

Voices

Using 1.1.490 wk 22. Under voice options it now shows .English (UK) Female,English (US) Female and the one I have installed is English and still shows (US) Female HI FI.

This is the info still showing in help.

Open the main menu and select Settings > Navigation > Voice navigation.

"Standard- and high-quality (hi-fi) male and female navigation voices are available to download in UK English, US English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. (The standard-quality UK English female voice is Included with the HERE app when you install it.) All of the navigation voices in these six languages announce street names. The other navigation voices available in the HERE app are standard-quality but don't announce street names. They will, however, tell you which way to turn and when.

If you download a map of a country or region and use drive navigation there, you won't automatically hear voice navigation in a language spoken in that country or region. Navigation voices and downloaded maps behave independently of each other".

I received this in an email today from HERE

"Hi,

Perfect, thank you! Going to inform our QA. The issue is not very straight forward, it also appeared on Nexus that don’t have SD card option at all. We are on it. Thank you for the feedback and your time."

As long as I had their ear I decided to bring up the most requested new desired feature on this forum of adding the ability to load custom POI's like we do on our Garmin units. I will let you know if they have anything to say in regards to maybe getting that done.

Just for info. I put in a request to allow access to collections or favorites when not signed in or being off line. Like Garmin Viago allows you to do.

Sounds like a licensing issue maybe but it would explain why the hi-fi voices are seen by folks that have had the HERE app installed for sometime while those of us that just installed it can't find any Hi-Fi voices.

They were going to attack the problem with the voice selection choices disappearing after the last update that I had exchanged emails with them about last week.

After having this on my

After having this on my Samsung GS5 for sometime now, I had an opportunity to test it out on a long trip from northern Ohio to southern Ohio. I took a different route when I returned.

While it seemed to give good route choices & directions, I could never use this (unless the Garmin died unexpectedly en-route) for the car. The screen on the phone is too small & I won't get a larger phone, nor tablet, or any other larger device. I prefer to have the Garmin at eye-level & vent mounted. If the phone was mounted there it would be useless, because it would be too hard to see.

Split screen Junction views are very nice to have on the Garmin, I never seen a single one on the phone app. Do they exist? I would have to say no.

Some of the route choices on the phone app are unbelievable, A 1 hour side trip had routes that varied from 57 minutes to 12+ hours! But, to be fair, Garmin makes some wild choices also, but I've never seen anything like that.

So while I'll keep it on the phone, it won't replace the Garmin anytime soon.

That is

KenSny wrote:

That is exactly how I feel.

Your experience is what I'm seeing as well:

- not bad routing
- although my Galaxy S4 screen is about the same size as my Nuvi 3597's screen, it's just to small and I can't find a good place to mount it
- no junction views as far as I can tell
- I haven't seen the "route choice" issues you talk about although I do see alternate routing suggested as options to the Faster Time routes I use by default. These don't seem wrong just different alternatives to what one would consider the fastest.

The one thing I really don't like is that there are no spoken street names. I don't want to start another debate about whether the HI-Fi voices give you this or not BUT if you've just installed the HERE app, like I have, there are NO such voices offered. If you had the voices in an earlier version of the app then you still have them but if your new to HERE then your out of luck.

Like you, I'll keep it on my phone and use it as a backup to my Nuvi.

I know this is off topic for this thread, but it is really a shame that Garmin discontinued Viago, which had these features. I would rather pay for something that has the features I want rather than get something for free that doesn't.

Scary Permissions

This sounds like a nice map product. So why does a map software need access to all of my contacts? I think it would be unfair to my trusted contacts to share all of their info with an app company to use it for whatever they feel like.

Looking at the permissions that the HERE App declares, why does it need access to any of these?

  • HERE wants to know all of my accounts on my device
  • HERE wants to know my contacts' information
  • HERE wants to Send/Receive SMS
  • HERE wants access my phone call log
  • HERE wants to know my phone number
  • HERE wants know my unique device ID
  • HERE wants to know who I am talking to on the phone.

Why on earth does a map need to obtain all of this information? The app connects occasionally to its creator, allowing to share your personal details. Worse, the app company gets your contact information too, and your contacts don't even know that you have shared their personal information away.

  • i can

Almost come up with a reasonable reason to receive an emergency sms on your route.. Like the other day if traveling to / from LA to Pxoneix and the bridge washed out, getting info and a redirection might make sense... But the rest of it.... ????

    --

    --
Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

    Here are the

Here are the reasons why the specific access is needed as is clearly stated in the HERE app help webpage in the General section:

Why is the HERE app asking if it can send text messages from my phone, and why does it want access to my contacts and call logs?

    - These would only be used by the Glympse feature in the HERE app, with which you can send info about your estimated time of arrival to friends using SMS. The list of names of people with whom you want to share this info is taken from the list of people you most recently contacted. Your call log and contacts are used to make this list of contacts.

    - If you don't use the Glympse feature, no text messages will be sent, and your call log and contacts info and won't be used.

Why does the HERE app need to access my photos, media and files, as well as the device ID and call information on my phone?

    - Those files and info allow the HERE app to offer features that you couldn’t enjoy otherwise. In order to know if there’s enough free memory on your phone to download maps to use offline, the HERE app needs to know how much memory your photos, media and files are already using. Your device ID and call info are used during voice navigation to inform the app if you take or make a phone call, so it can pause the voice instructions and not disturb your conversation.

    Here is a link to the complete HERE app help files which I've found answer most questions that arise;

    https://help.here.com/android/hereapp/#g1206

This is also available through the app.

It's looks like HERE rescinded some permissions that weren't required.

A new update came out today.

Perhaps I am being unfair to HERE, but I am very skeptical about the need for all of those permissions.

I had been thinking about installing it, just to compare how well it works compared to other products. However, I just do not see a genuine justification for their ability to harvest so much personal information, and I think that I'll now avoid installing HERE, due to that behavior.

Unless I can say up front that I do not want to use that feature, and it then asks only for the less intrusive permissions, I would still be reluctant to sign up. That's probably excessive paranoia on my part, but I'm just reluctant to grant permission for collection of personal info that I do not consider related to the functions for which I would use the app.
