Here Navigation

The topic of Here Navigation was posted on thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44232 on the Viago discussion.

Wanted to start this new thread on Here Navigation for discussion. So not to distract from the Viago topic.

I downloaded Here just to see what it would do.I was impress with all the free features including the off line maps. See https://help.here.com/en/android/hereapp#g270 and scroll down to the topics and review them.t Just to see what it offers in this Android Apk.

The short trip I tried it on it preformed well.Had the get street name instructions. If you download the HIFI voice and not the regular one you will get the street names.Showed speed limit for main roads on screen.

To download the maps you have lots of selections.Be sure to go to settings first after installing the Apk.Select storage memory the put mark in exSDCard to save to SD Card.

Collections is where you can put your favorites. Option there to make new folders that you may prefer to organize them.

For those who want the warning for going over speed limit. It is there under speed alerts. While driving the alert went off on me going 47 in a 45.At first didn't know what is was.Sounded like my school zone alert on my Nuvi 2597.Look on the screen and saw that the speed limit was now in red.

Lot of things on this Apk that I need to explore and hopefully others will post comments.

I like it

It beats GMaps hands down just being able to use maps offline. And, you pretty much have world maps as well, which is handy if you go to Europe, Asia, and other countries.

More finds.

It does have a large selections of maps. I also notice if you want to use a data connection you have setting for traffic. Some things a little different. To search for a internal poi.You select map then search offline and tap it.Then the screen will pop up for all the Place types. Example accommodations, eat and drink and etc. It does appear to have a large selection of built in pois.

Here

Thanks for the information on the "HERE" app
I downloaded it to my phone and downloaded the maps for Ireland & The British Virgin Islands.
They are very clear and accurate.
They really don't take up much room in memory

Favorites

Found a way to add favorites(Called collections on Here)a little easier.Using your PC.

1. Go to https://www.here.com/?x=ep&map=27.85572,-80.31003,7,normal

2.On right next to About Here'Click on the 3 horz lines.

3. Sign In.

4.Once Signed In.Click on New Collection.

5.Under collection title.Put the name of your new folder for a favorite and click create.Example Hotel.

6.Using the magnifying glass search tab.Put in the location you are looking for.Or select one of the built in categories to preform a search.

7.Click on the Star and select the folder you want the favorite to go in or make a new collection.

8.Click done when completed.

9.When you go back to your Smart phone the new information will now be there.

Note.to import favorites from Nokia.

Update HERE Maps on Windows 8.1 to the latest versions, then open it. You’ll be asked to sign in to your HERE account. If you don’t have a HERE account yet, you can register for one right away.

Your Nokia account email and password won’t sign you in to the latest version of HERE Maps. You need to register for a HERE account first.

After you’ve created a HERE account and signed in, you’ll be asked if you want to import your favourites from your Nokia account. To do that, just select Import.

..for us IOS types who lack the ability to add storage without using cumbersome external devices like media hubs.

It won't be an issue though until HERE releases the IOS version.

If you put check mark in off line map no data will be used.

Unless I'm missing

Unless I'm missing something, but when you check the box to use offline it states that it will use the maps you downloaded. Can't download maps unless you sign in.

I'll need to see how usable it is offline with whatever "map" is default with app

Interesting though.

--

you have to download a map or use a data connection

If you do not download any maps and check the use offline box you will have nothing.

In order to use the app you either have to download a map or use a data link on your phone.

You can also download maps if you select the log in using Facebook button.

I did some routes with the app today, not signed in, but online (using data). Works pretty good & does not seem to burn up data.

I did notice that the screen now stays on all the time, at least on my Samsung S5 5.0 Android. Display normally times out at 2 min.

However, using app without signing in & off line is just not acceptable.

I don't see the need for these companies to have us store our data online. Why does Here want us to store favorites online so they can be used on a phone?

I'll use this for those times when I'm without my Nuvi, which is not often.

I have tested both Viago and Here on my note 8 wi-fi tablet

After testing both apps on my Wi-Fi only Note 8 tablet I find that both do a good job without any data plan and offline.

I guess I would give Viago an edge in its operation considering it also has lane guidance and photo real junction views. Im glad that I got the Viago app, lifetime maps to go and the Garmin Real Directions options when they were available.

The biggest difference I have found is that the Viago app voice commands are much clearer and easier to understand even with the HERE app using the HI-Fi voice file option.

Here

I see Here was released 3-11-15 for Apple. Requires iOS 7.0 or later.Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. http://goo.gl/mBNWKB

Plan to put on the wifes ipad. Could come in handy for her to search offline for certain stops during our travels. Also may backfire and create more stops.

installed hERE on phone and tablet

Installed HERE on Nexus 4 phone (16 GB) and Samsung 2 7 tablet which has an SD card and a slow processor. Don't plan to navigate with the tablet. Saved many favorites on the website and devices. Sync with website is a good feature. Maps on SD card is good also.

The most important feature is offline maps and navigation. This needs to be tested offline.

The maps look good. There is a satellite view not as clear as Google Earth.

dobs108 smile

Offline nav

Dobs, the offline maps for navigation work well, just as if you have a data connection. The only hitch is no traffic feature while offline.

HERE a non-Starter?

Navigated with a short trip. Premium voice - female American English had been loaded. The voice was difficult to understand and even annoying.

Gave HERE the ultimate test, "Recalculating." Drove away from the route being navigated as a test. Constant voice directions were given from then on. Turn right on Elm Street! Turn left on Pine Street! Turn left on Cliff Drive! As I accelerated, constant, Turn right! Turn left! Turn right! Make a U-Turn! Turn left! The whole 5 mile trip, the app never shut up!

Tested

I tested Here today but since I deleted Here earlier I forgot to re download my Texas map so I had to stay online. I was not able to see if I could see my collections while off line. Also, can you save collections while off line?

--
Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

After getting home

I downloaded the Texas offline map to my Note 4 then turned the Here Maps offline.
I then found a couple of places and made a new collection and added them to it. I then took the offline restriction off and went to my PC and opened my Here.com. At first they were not there but while I was looking at the map they appeared. The new Collection Folder and the 2 places in the collection that I added to my Note 4 while offline were on my Here.com.

I will learn with practice.

Now I am trying to find out how to click on a place on the map on my Mobile and then drive to it. When I click on a place nothing happens.

EDIT: I have to hold down and not click and then I get a marker on the place I am touching.

Goona give Here a try

I use google maps and have found it better in some cases than my Garmin as far as updated road info. Curious to see how here performs.

will look

Thanks, will look it up.

Used Here for a week

Used Here for a week or so on a tablet. Some features could be useful.
Depending on which maps you download, has a smaller or larger impact on memory, it seems.

- Doesn't seem to have a large choice for English speaking voices
- Need to check to see if its really off when logged out as it may lurk in background, draining memory
- Compass can seem a bit jumpy
- Speed alert tone reminds of r l camera alert
- Guidance voice seems to be alerting too close to the turns and may cause driver to over shoot or brake up frantically: not good
- I didn't see where gas station locations were featured like in waze
- Program froze or crashed occasionally
- Not sure if street level was offered
- Note: offline means not on data so traffic is no longer real time since most recent log in.
- Route guidance indicated traffic delays in minutes but I couldn't be sure where the delays were on the route. There was a yellow area on the route but it could be approximate.
Here has potential but tweaking is definitely necessary

@Makinja

Not sure what voice setup you have.

Open the main menu and select Settings > Navigation > Voice navigation.

Standard- and high-quality (hi-fi) male and female navigation voices are available to download in UK English, US English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. (The standard-quality UK English female voice is Included with the HERE app when you install it.) All of the navigation voices in these six languages announce street names. The other navigation voices available in the HERE app are standard-quality but don't announce street names. They will, however, tell you which way to turn and when.

You need to sign in to your HERE account to download hi-fi navigation voices.

will take a look

Thanks, will take a look at that.

Hi-Fi voices on HERE app

I used the HERE app the other day with the English US Male Hi-Fi voice and it was much better and easier to understand than the female version that normally I prefer for nav voices.

I have to say the app keeps working better and better and with downloaded maps, live traffic and multiple routes to choose from I feel in a lot of ways it is better than my Garmin 3790lmt was overall.

The maps are updated before they are released for the Garmin lifetime updates and more frequently.

I started using the HERE app on the iPhone last week. I'm quite impressed with what they can do with something that's $0 and can still navigate off-line! smile

Finally had a chance to use Here

this week. Have used it before but not really seeing what I could do.
I have not made a route with more than one way point but that is my next project.

What I did find was: I put my collection in the map and was riding down the road with the route active and wanted to turn off data to see what the map looked like without traffic. I was unable to go to the setting to turn off data until I stopped my route.

Does anyone know if you can get to this setting while on an active route?
