Viago gone?

I found this link over on the Garmin software forum: http://sites.garmin.com/en-US/viago/

Quote:

This app is no longer available for purchase or download.

It appears that Garmin may have discontinued Viago ... too bad. Although it could have used a few enhancements, I kind of liked the program.

That is a bummer

That is a bummer, my son just added it to his phone this last Saturday after seeing it on mine. It showed it was available earlier this week when I checked for updates.

It was the best nav app that you could download the maps and did not need a data plan to fully use everything.

Refund?

If I was your son, I would be tempted to call Garmin Customer Support and ask for a refund.

OH NO

I use this all the time as a back up when we use our in dash Honda.
I had waited to buy the Europe map until closer to when we were going. I went to try and buy it today and this is what it said:

"Error
User is not eligible for this purchase"
on left was Google play on right was OK

Same thing for traffic.....

I will email Garmin to see if the Europe Map will ever again be available....

EDIT:
There was no way to send support for Viago so I clicked on my Nuvi 2450 and then I could write a note.
I asked several questions about Viago and ask if there was any way I could buy the download Europe map. Will see what they say

It is completely different and was something that they got when they bought Navigon.

Viago Gone?

That is certainly interesting. It appears as if Garmin StreetPilot Onboard is still available.

Still Appears to Work

I used Viago this morning and it still appears to work normally. I assume there will be no more updates available but hopefully, it will remain functional. Too bad. It was a good product but unfortunately, didn't last long.

I emailed Garmin support about the issue. I'll report back when / if I get a response.

My son just bought the NA maps and downloaded last night

alandb wrote:

This move by Garmin must have just happened today. I called my son and he said he just got around to buying and downloading the maps last night. He is actually glad that he got it bought while it was still available and wants to keep it.

This is the email link that is on the Google Play Viago web page to contact Garmin regarding Viago.

The page still is available if you bought the app, if you select my apps on the Google Play site viago still shows up and that would allow you to still reinstall it on your devices if needed.

Yes

I saw it could be redownloaded but didn't try. On the app it tells about what you can shop for but when you click on price it won't let you buy anything.
Has any one trier to redownload it?

My response from 1st email

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

We have pulled Viago from the Google Play store, but existing users will continue to be able to use the app without any limitations. They will still receive mapping updates, can continue to make In-App Purchases and will be able to re-install the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store as needed (as long as the same account credentials used to purchase the app originally are used).

Second email

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

As long as you have the application you still should be able to make in-app purchases. Are you receiving any specific errors? Can you provide screen shots for reference?

If you have any additional questions please feel free to reply to this email.

Navigator

mgarledge wrote:

If you want an Android app that stores maps offline and does not need a data connection, I'm using one called Navigator (not Navagon). I'm pretty happy with it, and it uses free Open Street Maps, so there is no need to buy maps or the app. Can't post a link to it right now, as the Google Market isn't responding.

Update: Got in to the Google on my tablet, although I still can't get in via my PC. Look for "Mapfactor GPS" rather than the poorer program listing itself as "Navigator".

This is the reply I received from Garmin about Viago functionality:

Apparently, Viago will still function, in app purchases can still be made and "limited" support for the product is still available. However the future of the map download process is still unclear.

Viago

I also contacted Garmin and made severial replies to his answer.

Question.Has Garmin Viago been discontinued?I do not see the APP avaiable anymore on the Android Play Store. If discontinued how will this effect me?This is a great product. I use all the time and I don't want to see it go away.

Answer. The application has been discontinued. Since you already have the application you will still be able to use the application.

Question. How about map updates and any software updates? How do I have access to get updates since it is no longer on Play Store for Android ?

Answer.Existing users will still receive software and mapping updates whenever released.

Question. That sounds good but how will we receive the updates and by what means will we know there is a update?Old method was through Play Store.

Answer.Everything will still be handled the old way, just like any other application in the Play store.

Not really sure these are correct answers. By the way under My Apps located in Play Store the Viago App is no longer there. It was posted by another member it was showing on their My Apps in Play Store. Is that still true?

Viago is still in my apps. It was way down in the list on the third page of my apps and I almost missed it.

Will you go to shop, maps, and click on price and see if it will give you a price or say error.

Yes both android and apple versions are listed as no longer available if you click on the link in the first thread posting.

It does still show up in my apps list on Google play and has the option to install again if needed. I also found that on the NA maps I purchased I can still download and install any of the map options for NA.

The new HERE app works well and has free Europe maps

mgarledge wrote:

The new "HERE" app from what was formally Navteq and they now also supply the maps for Garmin and a lot of the vehicle units is still free. It works very well and has the option to load both NA and Europe maps for offline use for free. The only caveat is that between the two the maps would take nearly 15GB's of space on your micro SD card.

One cool thing "HERE" just added is if you set your destination to a store in a mall they will take you to the mall and then will take you directly to the door of the store you selected inside the mall.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.here.app.m...

"What's New

• We fixed an issue some tablet users had with downloading the new version

• We added interactive 3D maps of shopping malls and airports in 70 countries

• You can tap on any place icon on the map to see more about it or how to get there

• Traffic incidents show you what’s causing the jam before you have to find out in person

• You can now download maps in the background — no need to wait for them to finish

• We adjusted the volume so you can hear turn-by-turn directions more clearly"

Typical Garmin BS.

I think I know why Garmin gave up on trying to sell Viago

Looked on the Google Play webpages for both Viago and HERE nav apps and found that HERE has just so far outperformed Viago it wasn't even a contest:

As of today these are the download numbers for each:

Viago nav app
Installs after about 9 months

10,000 - 50,000

HERE nav app
Installs after less than 3 months

1,000,000 - 5,000,000

I've tried Here but found it to be junk. I suggest instead that people look at "Mapfactor GPS". It uses free OSM maps and can be used without a real-time data connection.

The reviews for HERE are very good

I have not experienced any position lag on either my Samsung Note 8 tablet or my Motorola Luge (RAZR M) Smartphone and find it is as position accurate as MapFactor Navigator or Viago on my units. In fact it also matches the position that is shown on my built in GM Nav.

The HERE app and maps are free and are the latest available and the same ones that Garmin buys from HERE for all their nav devices.

After over 69,000 reviews the reviewers have rated it at 4+ stars out of 5 and really do not see position lag as a complaint from the reviewers. Most of the people that rated it poorly had a problem downloading the maps or being able to install to their SD card on their device.

What a shame

I really did like this app. There were some issues, and I think they could have been overcome if Garmin would have put a little effort into developing what the consumer wanted.

I am looking at the Next and am impressed with it so far. There are certain thinks I like, some I can live with and some I hate. The biggest issue is the lack of themes. On my Samsung S4 the day time theme is extremely hard to see, the night time theme is worse.

my question their response

Category Or Device: Garmin viago
Problem Description: read that it will not longer be available, why? it was one of your better applications, if you need to get rid of something get rid of naviagon

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Unfortunately we were not notified as to why the application was discontinued; therefore I cannot provide an exact answer.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

Viago

I was not on board with some answers I got back from Garmin. This last reply pretty well sums it up.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Sorry, your questions have not been responded to in a way that meets your expectations. I believe I can answer your questions to your satisfaction. If I am not able to and you still wish to speak to someone higher up, we will be happy to forward you email. Keep in mind with the application being pulled from the application markets, it means that Viago has reached its End of Life.

Concerning your questions about receiving updates to maps, the application, and reinstalling the app:

If there is an update to the maps it maps should be announced in the application, and you will be prompted in the application to update your maps. Updates to the application should take place through the Play Store, if an update is released. You can check for updates to the app by going to My Apps>All>Select Viago. If you need to reinstall the app you will do it the same way you check for application updates. It will not show up under installed apps, and will only show up under the "All" section.

Concerning the discontinuation of Viago, this is our official statement:

The Garmin viago turn-by-turn navigation app was removed from the iTunes App Store and the Google Play Store on February 23. Viago was uniquely designed as a low-cost offboard navigation app that offered premium features through in-app purchases. Unfortunately, the app did not perform as we had hoped. We have ceased selling this product and have no plans to update it going forward. We are redeploying our app developers to continue working on other apps within the Garmin portfolio.

If you feel that I have not addressed your concerns, or if you still wish to have email forwarded to a supervisor, please respond and let us know, we will be happy to do so.

Is does appear they will continue to do the map updates which is a plus to me. Well satisfied with what it now provides. Even through custom pois and transfer of favorites would be nice. I use my Nuvi 2597 for my long trips. As far as adventuring out on short trips or spare of the moments for
