I did something to my Costco locations on my 1450. Deleted. In BASECAMP, I have Under 'my collection' a folder named Costco, with a subfolder named Costco Locations. All Costco locations are in order. It seems that I can't send 'Costco Locations' to my device. They end up in favorites but all mumbled jumbled up. Before my mishap, (1450 in favorites), I had 'Costco locations' as a folder by itself so I didn't have to search all of the favorites. I would like them in alfa order as they are in Basecamp. Any ideas on why I can't do this?

They're sorted by distance.
If you reload the Costco file from here and then load it as a POI, you can sort it in almost any order before running POI Loader.

I save
I save my folders from BaseCamp to folders on my pc then I upload them with poi loader. That way they are in me extras in folders

They were in my favorites, then a folder named 'costco locations'. I have there also a 'AZ locations'. I looked at AZ and they were not exactly in order. To hold me up, I would like to say they were in order. I had thought that at one time I had transferred them there from Basecamp. Maybe for them to have been in order I am wrong, but I still can't transfer them.

I pulled this from Garmin support.Do you have at least 12 saved favorites?
Many of Garmin's automotive devices allow you to organize your saved favorites into categories. Categories may not display until the device has at least 12 saved favorites. Categories will appear in alphabetical order.
More info.
The nuvi, LIVE, zumo, Camper/RV, or dezl devices that support adding categories to favorites will support up to 200 categories with a maximum of 20 categories assigned per waypoint. You can learn how to create, edit or delete categories from the link below.

Yes, I have a lot of saved favorites. Your suggestion is the way that I am now putting all of my Costco locations in the folder 'Costco Location'. Very time consuming. But at least I will not have to go searching for them in all of my favorites. I will just have to input them in alfa order. I do not recall doing this before. Thanks.

I know it make a difference how it goes but can't remember which way is better as I send all of mine to Extras.

Under 'my collection' in Basecamp, I have tried, 'send to device', the main folder and the subfolder. Never ends up in a folder in favorites. When I manually copy them to the newly made folder (while in favorites) and then try to delete them from the generic favorites list, they also get deleted from the folder that I just transfered them into. If I send them to Extras, do I have to use the POI loader and will they be in a folder there? Seems like something so simple becomes a mountain. Thanks

Something else
It is my understanding that when using the GPS it will read from the internal and removable disk. When I start the 1450 it always ask if I want to transfer data to my internal memory in case the card is removed. No is the answer. I always try to download maps and POIs to the removable card. Including my favorites and my failed attempts for the Costco folder. When using the 1450, it does read both, right?

Categories
If you want to set up categories and want to send them to custom pois use Poi Loader.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for guide.
If you set up the categories in favorites or save places. Make a copy of your current gpx file on the gps and saved it somewhere on your computer. You can always paste the copy back to gps as a temp.gpx later if needed.Plus you have the option to receive and send in BaseCamp and MapSource for the favorites.

-------------
I made me a folder on my computer called
My Garmin
Then I made a folder called "Files on Jull"
in this folder I put a Folder called My POIs
In the My Poi Folder I made folders to match "My Collection" in BaseCamp,
Attractions
Businesses
Cameras
Car Shows
Food
McDonalds
....etc....
Under Attractions I have my sub-folders by city...Dallas, Brownwood... etc...
Under Businesses I have sub-folders...Businesses, Lodging, Transportation
I also have the McDonalds file that I get from POI Factory in the McDonalds folder in .gpx. (everything is in .gpx, I don't keep this in BaseCamp, I just change any .csv files from POI-Factory to .gpx using EPE)
Every thing is done this way.
I then go to BaseCamp and export ONLY the sub-folder to the sub-folder of the same name.
You must use the sub-folder only and you have to do this step one sub-folder at a time.
After all of my BaseCamp files have been exported to the corresponding file on my PC I then use POI Loader to upload them to my device. I point the POI Loader to the folder called "My POI" and upload.
POI Loader uploads these all to your device. Then you look in Extras on your device and they are just like you have them in the folders on your PC
When you want to make change to any of the sub-folders in BaseCamp you just export it again to your PC folder so when you use POI Loader again with "My POI" and every thing matches.
Hope this helps

I am reading this to mean that you are trying to set up a category for Costco in your Favorites. Is that correct?
Assuming this is the case, then you are using the word "folder" in place of what I would think of as a Favorites "Category".
It is my understanding that when you look at Favorites using "Where To?" you will see the locations in Favorites (or if you chose a "Category" under "All Favorites") in "distance" order.

My own POI's
I am still fairly new to creating the POI's on my GPS.
I do not create any folders whatsoever for the different items.
I have ONE folder and call it 3790 POI's.
In that particular folder I have all the different items such as Americas Best Value down to Wendy's.
There are CSV or GPX files, the BMP file and if available the sound file. In other words up to 3 individual files for each item.
Then I use EPE and get it to transfer ALL the files contained in that ONE 3790 POI folder to the GPS.
Next when I open up "Extras" all the different locations are sorted out in a folder with its own name, which I DID NOT CREATE.
I.E All the Americas Best Value locations are in one folder. All others are in their respective folders right down to Wendy's.
These are EPE created folders are all alpha sorted and inside the folders they are located by distance from position.
To my mind the OP is trying to make a very simple operation too complicated.

What are the steps - in detail - that you go through to have Extra POI Editor (EPE) read and then transfer all the files in the 3790 POI folder to the 3790.
EPE
Plug the GPS into the computer.
Then execute "EPE" and direct it to the folder all the files are in, there are between the CSV, GPX, BMP and sound files about 300 seperate files in this ONE folder.
When it asks me for a name I just call it POI's. Then EPE does it's thing for a minute or two and then informs me all files have been uploaded.
If I open Windows Explorer I see ONE file only in the Garmin POI folder and it is named POI.gpi.
There two others I do seperately because of frequent updates which are RLC and speed cams.
So all there is in the POI folder are three files now.
Unplug the GPS and go to "Extras"
In EXTRAS I now have many folders and they are listed in alphabetical order A-Z.
I guess that EPE is smart enough to have McDonalds in one folder, Days Inn's in one folder, Wendy's in one folder etc.
Now when I select a particular location which has a soundfile and I select it to show on the map a box is shown to play the sound file.

Let me see if I have this straight.
You have a single folder with no subfolders.
Within the top-level (only) folder you load all your different POI in any order.
You run POI Loader (not EPE) and all the files are sorted and put into folders (categories) within Extra on the GPS.
Here I make an assumption. You have one category per file so that restaurants are not grouped into one file or folder and all the hotels are in another. You have a folder for each POI file.

My error
I meant to say POI LOADER.
Yes you have this right, I just "dump" all the files I want into ONE folder without any subfolders.
The files in this folder sort themselves alphabetically but I do not put "Fast food", "Restaurants", "Hotels" etc into seperate folders!
There are as many as about 300 files, CSV,GPX,BMP and soundfiles in ONE folder.
And YES in Extras, Days Inns, McDonalds, etc all have their own folder in Extras sorted alphabetically not by CATEGORY.
Nuvi 2797LMT, DriveSmart 50 LMT-HD, Using Windows 10. DashCam A108C with GPS.
Is this what you mean?
Are the poi files like McDonalds.gpx, Campgrounds.gpx... etc... in the folder?
Is this what you are talking about putting in the one folder?
Or are you putting each location of McDonalds in the POI folder and each campground in the folder etc...

Whichever I download from POI Factory goes into the ONE folder.

I meant to say POI LOADER.
Yes you have this right, I just "dump" all the files I want into ONE folder without any subfolders.
I believe POI Loader has done this for quite a while now. If you were to use subfolders, you would be limited to 32 files (CSV or GPX - not the sound or icon) per folder and 32 subfolders within the top level folder.
There are no limitations using the method you describe, but what the unit lists are not "folders" or "categories" but just POI names. Categories, IMO would contain all the files relating to a keyword such as Lodging or Food.

……

My opinion is that categories include both folder names and file names.
When I select Extra=>Custom POIs I see a list of all the folder names that are in the “Main Folder” on my computer(the folder that .gpi file gets its name from). In addition, the names of any files that are directly in the Main Folder can be seen.
Then when I tap “All Categories” I only see a list of file names.
Observation of the above is evidence to me that both folder names and file names are being used as Category names.
It is when one taps on a category whose name is based a file name, that names of individual Pois (locations) are seen.
In other words I think Melaqueman should have said :
====================
Then in EXTRAS I have a category each for
Americas Best Value

Dennys

Choice Hotels
Dennys

The reason I do Folders is:
Hotels:
...Hampton.gps
...Best Western.gps
...etc... several different brands
This way when I click on Extra and I need to see a Hampton Inn I don't have to scroll down a lot of files. I pull up Hotels then have only the hotels to look through.
I also have Folders called:
Food
(this is where I would put your files)
.....Arby's.csv
.....Burger Joints,csv
.....Dennys.csv
Business
People
Activities
McDonalds (POI file)
Cameras (POI file)
etc
These have the files like you put in you main folder but are separated for me.
This way I have a menu and this helps me find things easier.
Just my way of doing it.

When you load the new POI folder to GPS with POI loader, (for the first time) is everything in the EXTRAS on the GPS deleted or blank? The two that you do separately, do you delete the old ones off the GPS then load the updated file? If not, do the files just overwrite the old ones? I would be worried about having duplicates.

Nit Picking
At one time, each and every time you ran POI Loader, it would create an output file names poi.gpi (without giving you any choice).
For several years now, POI Loader has given you the option of naming the output file (to the left of the extension). POI Loader "defaults" to the name of the folder to which it is pointed. In Malaqueman's case, this folder is named "3790 POIs".
Once you have pointed POI Loader to a folder, you have the option (but not the requirement) of changing the name of the about-to-be-outputted .gpi file.
So, if you have not changed the name of the folder to which you typically point POI LOader, you do not have to first delete it. POI LOader will recognize that this file name exists and ask you if you want to overwrite it.
I also like a clean slate - so, I typically click on the "open files" option in the dialog that appears when I attach my nuvi; navigate to the POI folder and RENAME existing .gpi files (usually changing the extension to .gpiold) that I do not want at the moment.
My reasoning is I do a lot of testing and often want a "clean slate" as far as the nuvi is concerned, but will later want to rename the files that comprise my base loads after testing has been completed.
Let's agree that "files" and "folders" that are included within the FOLDER to which you point POI Loader are going to displayed under "All Categories" in Garmin's alphabetical order (which is not exactly the same as Window's alpha order).
What is different between a "file" and a "folder" within the FOLDER to which you point POI Loader is what the device will do with them.
If you select what was a "file", you will see the locations within that "file" displayed in distance order (or at least the first 50 of the locations) from wherever your device thinks it is located.
If you select what was a "folder", you will see the names of the "files" that were within that "folder" displayed in Garmin's alpha order. Thus, Garmin considers a "folder" to be a "Category" of files.
In Malaqueman's case, he might have had a folder named "Food" into which he had placed the
Arby's.csv, Burger Joints,csv, and Dennys.csv files
and another folder named "Lodging" into which he placed
Americas Best Value.csv and Choice Hotels.csv.
Then, when he looked at Custom POIs, he would have seen
Food
Lodging
Then if he pressed "Food", he would have seen
Arbys
Burger Joints
Dennys
...
There are as many as about 300 files, CSV,GPX,BMP and soundfiles in ONE folder.
...
This means that he could have over 100 separate POI files.
While they would all be in alpha order, scrolling down to Zaxbys would take Malaqueman some time - which is why many people want to have 4 or 5 "Categories" to reduce the average scrolling time.

@mgarledge ... I always want the geeky things too because they are fun to play with. I have 2 nuvi's with voice command. That said, trust me ... voice command is not all it is cracked up to be and not as useful as you might think. Athough I have used the feature on occasion, it is not something I depend on. If I really need to get something into my nuvi, I pull over and do it with the touch screen. While voice command is a "nice to have" feature for its geek value, it is not really practical for normal day to day usage IMHO. I would not put it on my list of requirements if I was in the market for a new gps device.
Incidentally, maybe it is just me, but I find that tinkering around with the voice command intracacies is just as distracting to driving as using the touch screen.

The voice command in the 800 series is/was kind of primitive, but in many ways quite superior to what is in the newer series. The 800 series had a set of fixed commands you used, but once you were into a screen they would be able to interpret almost anything shown on the screen. The 3597 I now have lacks that feature and many of the commands found in the 800 series. I almost want mine back from my daughter.

I have to agree the voice command in my 855 is superior to the 3790.
The 855 has NEVER come on because of something on the stereo. You have a steering wheel mounted button to activate the voice command.
I even have a customized setting for the 3790
"Wake up now dummy" to prevent it from coming on when not requested, it still does!!!
In fact the 3790 is so unreliable that on looooong trips I will always have the 855 along as backup. That has happened to me a few times!!! HEAT from the sun has put the 3790 out of commission a few times.
I am seriously thinking of getting a 2798LMT this fall, larger screen, backup camera are two features I like.

Today I needed some Favorites in Categories
I normally use my Extra POIs for my categories but I wanted some for a trip in favorites.
In BaseCamp I put the category in by selecting all the way points then right clicking the first one and adding a category to each group of waypoints and they now all have the correct category.
Using Basecamp I tried to send one category to favorites, they all came in as single waypoints and no category.
So, I deleted all the old waypoints from the unit then sent two different categories to the unit and they went to the unit as two different categories.
So, it is like my car. If you just put a single category in the unit it does not make a category group in the favorites. But, if you send two different categories you will have two categories in your favorites.
Clear as mud?
