Rest Areas Combined Problem With Garmin nuvi 50LM

I have downloaded the Combine Rest Areas through POI Loader to my Garmin nuvi 50LM. I can access them by navigating to Extras, Custom POIs, but they do not show up on my map. I also downloaded a custom icon and sound file, giving them the same name as the POI file, and they don't work either. I have tried removing and reinstalling, and have tinkered with it until...well, until I give up. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get these to work as they should? THANK YOU!

Also

First off, welcome to your first post.

In addition to all that charlesd45 has pointed you towards, if you want alerts, you need to run POI Loader in Manual rather than Express mode, then be sure to set an alert and an alert distance for the rest areas combined. (I use 16,000 feet for that POI.)

Let us know what happens. You certainly should expect to hear your custom wav alert when you pass an exit ramp to a rest area if all is done correctly.

Good advice. Works on my

Good advice.
Works on my 50.
I use the rest area icon, silent.WAV and set the distance to 10560 ft.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Two to three miles away from

Two to three miles away from the rest area? I thought one mile was sufficient.

Progress

Thanks for the welcome and for the information you and others gave. I removed all custom POIs and started from scratch. The rest area icon did show up. Will have to wait until next travel to see if the audio alert works. I assume it will. Appears the main thing I was not doing was the manual installation. My first Garmin and new to the whole process. Thanks again.

wav and sox.exe

The main point is to make sure to have the sox.exe in the right location and have the one listed in the link. You can do simulation to check out voice alerts while setting back in your easy chair. Per Garmin support .

50 series device?

02/26/2013 To simulate a route on the device, the GPS Simulator must be turned on. To turn the GPS Simulator on, please power your device on and follow the steps below:

1. Touch Settings 2. Touch System 3. Touch the button below GPS Simulator 4. Touch On 5. Touch OK to save the change

With the GPS Simulator on, you may now use the nuvi to simulate a route to a given destination. If you would like to simulate a route from a different starting point than your current location, follow the steps below after turning the simulator on:

1. Touch Where To? 2. Locate the starting point (address, POI, city, intersection, etc..) 3. Touch the Set Location button that appears on the bottom of the screen 4. Return to the main menu and touch Where To? 5. Locate the desired destination 6. Touch Go! 1

The device will now calculate a route from the "Set Location" point to the entered destination.

1 After touching Go!, the device will ask you if you would like to simulate driving the route. If you touch Yes, the nuvi will act as though you are driving the route (the vehicle icon will move and the device will speak the turn instructions). Touching No will still calculate the route and display it on the map. However, the vehicle icon will remain at the set location and the device will not speak any turn directions.

*Note: If the two locations are separated by the ocean (e.g., starting in the US and attempting a route simulation to a point in Europe), the device will attempt the calculation but will not succeed. Instead, it will return an error stating that it cannot calculate the route. Correct this by placing both points on the same continent.

Re:Two to three miles away from

Greetings

That would depend if you are traveling with a passenger.

I have mine set to 3 miles for rest stops. That way I have time to ask my wife if she needs to stop, and then time to move over to the correct lane if she does.

Unique audio alert

Since I am a bit involved with this POI I have my preferences.

My audio alert goes off at 6000 feet with the unique audio alert !

"Rest Area ahead - any need ??". She can then answer the question !

Is 3 miles enough? I find ,at 70mph, it takes my wife from the time I ask to just AFTER I pass the ramp to the Rest Area to make up her mind if she needs to stop or not. grin

My wife just listens to the announcement for an approaching rest area and then decides if we need to stop. Otherwise she just tells me we need to find a stop somewhere so a mile and approximately 1 minute is enough warning.

WAV and Sox.exe

Thanks Charlesd45. Yes, I have these in the right location and properly named. I will try the trip simulation and let you know how it turns out. Don't know how I ever lived life without a GPS. This newbie is having a ball.

I know what you mean. Done a lot of car travel before I got my first one. Can't do without it now.Especially when you add all the extras.

Sure ...

Strephon_Alkhalikoi wrote:

I have mine set to 26400 feet (five miles). It gives me plenty of time to decide whether I need to "go" or not.

Success

The first simulated trip resulted in a "Ding, Ding" instead of the audio alert. So, I did an online conversion of the mp3 to wav; saved it to the proper place and started over. Next simulation resulted in the correct alert at the distance I specified. SUCCESS at last! Don't know if I would have ever gotten there without your help. Thanks again.

Happy to hear you got it working.
There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you know how to do it, things wil go easy with future created POI's.

GPX

A lot of us use the GPX method of building the alerts into the file.To be able to run POI Loader in express mode. Plus the gpx files give you the option of dialing phone numbers using the Bluetooth option.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6203

So, basically these gadgets will do almost anything but cook dinner...well, at least it will guide you to a place you can get dinner. Looks like I found a way to pass time until camping weather gets here. Thanks.
