Red light Camera Support for Garmin 3590LMT

Garmin doesn't support Red light cameras on the 3590LMT. I wonder if there is a reason that the most expensive GPS on the market (at the time they were released MSRP $429.00)doesn't support what almost everybody wants?
It's like buying a new Cadillac and finding out that GM doesn't support air conditioning so the don't install it. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. However if you buy a CHEAP Garmin, you can have the red light cameras. I'm hot about this, and Garmin should find a way to correct it, but they say they are not.

Is there anyway to make the 3590LMT compatible to use the POI's with red light cameras? SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME!

Welcome To The Factory

I don't know where you got the information that your 3590LMT does not support Red Light Camera POI's, it's absolutely wrong.

As member charles45 providing a link for you to download the free trial of Garmin Safety Cameras it certainly shows it's compatible with your 3590LMT.

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/digital-...

Click on the link, then under "version" select "Download Free Trial" and add to cart, then check out. It will bring you to the Garmin sign in screen, sign into your account. If you never registered your Nuvi you must do so before downloading the file.

The file is just that, a free trial only with no updates. To receive updates you must buy the subscription at 24.99 per year.

Not a good value at all, you're better off using the POI Factory Redlight & Speed Camera files which you can customize and add audio alerts to, the Garmin Cyclops files cannot be customized and only have a tone alert.

You can become an active member of the POI factory and get the Redlight and Speed Cameras for FREE.
Read how to become an active member here.

Thanks For The Help

rolleyes Thanks for all the replies. The Garmin Tech Support advised me that the 3590LMT was not compatible with the Cyclops files. It frustrated me so bad I almost threw my Garmin in the toilet, lol. So it would appear that Garmin has some uninformed techs working for them.

At any rate, I did become a member of POI-Factory and have downloaded the red light camera files. Now I need to learn how to correct spelling for the streets in my city, cause a couple are spelled wrong. Then I need to learn how to add/change sound files. Also would like to figure out how to make a custom alert popup. If anyone can shed some light or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I am very new at this.
Thanks for the help guys!

welcome

Welcome to the site.

There is a Getting Started button in the upper right of this page right under POI Files. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Getting Started" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

There are definitely times and situations where contacting Garmin Customer Service by phone or email is the quickest (and sometimes the only) way to resolve a problem. It's equally as true that there are certain types of questions and maybe certain first-line CS agents that end up giving out incorrect info, misunderstanding situations or don't do the needed follow-up to callers' question or don't send your issue to a specialist when it's beyond their level to help.

A very large percentage of questions you may have can be answered here at The Factory more correctly and much faster than by going through Garmin. An added bonus is that as one of our members recently stated, replies to questions and forum topics at this site tend to be much less snarky than on the average web site wink

City street name errors and such are built into the map and can only be corrected with a map update. Have you updated to the latest map? If the problem is with the latest map, you should file an error report with Garmin to have corrections arrive in a future map update.

Adding Custom icons or audio to your Custom POIs is pretty straightforward but requires exactness so if issues arrive for you getting custom icons or audio with your nuvi, be sure to come back and ask for help. Ditto for settings visual/audible alerts--hint: running POI Loader in Manual Mode rather than Express Mode gives you the ability to set alerts. You've already been offered several very useful links to faqs here at The Factory that will get you started.

Update: I just searched the forums for the word snarky. It's appeared 8 times. The best:

The latest Redlight Camera shows 7 Redlight cameras in Tallahassee, you said there are a couple misspelled, I can only see one which (Orcala) has already been corrected by Angela (Globe Turtle). What is the other one?

RLC - Monroe & Tennessee FL Tallahassee poi-factory Dec04 13

RLC - Orcala & Tennessee FL Tallahassee poi-factory Dec04 13
RLC - Capital Cir & Tennessee FL Tallahassee poi-factory Dec04 13

You can always correct spelling in your file by using Microsoft Excel. What I do to simplify locations is high light all fields, then I choose Data, then select Sort, now I choose column D, and it will sort the entire file by state to reference your area easier. Here you can correct the spelling, then save the file. There may be better methods but this works for me.

But please notify Angela of any errors you may find so the next update will be accurate for all to have.

POI Loader will accept .wav files but you must load a specific version of sox.exe into the folder from which POI LOader is executed.

Are you following the instructions per http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 and selecting the MY POIS folder with poi loader when you come to browse? When you select manual mode are you also setting a distance for the alert?

Just in case this is your first time loading custom Pois.Once you load all your with custom pois at one time using Poi Loader. You get message so many pois loaded. The files are converted to one big gpi file on the gps unit. To locate connect gps to computer and go to the Garmin drive. Click on the POI folder and there based on the name you gave it.You will see the name with gpi extension. Example MY POIS.gpi . If your computer does not see your gps unit see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41416

@MrKenFL.Using the new Poi Loader for last two downloads and had no problems. Must be a file problem.

Hi Charles. Thanks for the reply!

I put the sox.exe in the POI Loader directory. Launched POI Loader. Found the GPS unit. I proceeded and changed to Manual. I set the distance to 1320ft. Then browsed to the directory that contained all of the wav's, ico's and bmp's. When it finished it just said the the load was successful. I did not see the load progress bar slow down any from the other times I tried it. Then after it finished, I rebooted the GPS and when it came up I went to settings then custom POI's. Under audio there's nothing. Under Alerts theres nothing. No trace of the files that I just tried to load into the GPS. I've done this about eight times. I'm lost at this point. there's got to be something that I'm not doing, but should be, I'm reasonably sure. Just don't know what it is.

I have been playing around

I have been playing around with the red light camera POIs for two weeks. I found a website with a pretty decent gpx file while I wait for my POI-Factory status. I have the proximity alert, custom audio, and icon all going. One thing I don't like is that on my older Garmin unit, the camera icon only shows when the alert sounds whereas the new unit shows it all the time, even if I am on the next street over.

There must be color problems on the older units because even the downloaded icons shows as purple. I must say that the alert function is amazing, though.

If you are still having problems, then I suggest that you reduce your custom POI "load" using POI Loader to the bare minimum. You want a folder that contains only 3 files - the .csv file, the .bmp file, and the .wav file. As pointed out at the bottom of one of the best FAQs we have
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721
the names to the left of the extension must be exactly the same character string.

First, let POI Loader
"Remove all previously installed custom POIs from your device"

Then run POI Loader again and point it to the folder with those three files, using manual mode and 1320 feet as you have previously done.

Then after you safely disconnect your device from the computer, do a "Where To?" > "Custom POIs.

I am not sure whether or not you must hit the down arrow to find "Custom POIs" since I do not have a 3590.

If you try this approach, report to us what you find, please.

The sound and icon are integrated into the GPI file and do not show as individual files. If you simulate driving near one of the locationsthe sound will play and the icon shows on the screen.

Still Not Getting It To Work Properly.

Well, apparently I'm not getting this. OK, the POI's are in the Garmin, but there are no BMP's and no WAV's associated with the RLC's that I loaded from the CUSTOM POI's. I am at a complete loss after messing with this for two solid days. There is no way to select a custom ALERT sound for the RLC's. I've done as instructed, but the only thing that worked is the POI's. I tested it in my truck, and it does work when approaching the Red Light Camera, but I can only select single Beep or continuous beep, the default sound. Under alerts, it only shows POI checked. Maybe that's why Garmin told me that they do not support red light cameras on the 3590LMT, cause it's too difficult for a lay person to grasp it. Apparently I'm not getting it either. What am I doing wrong?

When you say it does work when approaching the Red Light Camera" what exactly happens? Do you hear your .wav file play?

If you are to see the .bmp, you must be zoomed into 200 feet or less. This is true for any Icon, not just red light icons.

You will not be able to find/see/hear .bmp or .wav files by pressing buttons on the unit. These files have been compiled into the .gpi file by POI Loader and will be activated by the unit when you are within 30 meters (slightly less than 100 feet) of a POI (assuming a zoom level of 200 feet or less).

I have my Alert Tone set to "Single" and my .wav files play fine (they would not if the Proximity Alert audio was set to "Off").

Tell us in some detail what you expect to see/hear on your unit?

We Can Try This

@Meredith,

Please don't get frustrated, we'll get this sorted out.

I can send you a working RedLight POI file for you to test. If it works we can assume you are doing something wrong when creating it.

I can't contact you through the forum since the Contact button is not available in your profile.
I'm not sure if you haven't checked the box in your profile, or since you're new it's not available yet.
Please check your profile and see if the "Personal contact form" has a check mark next to it.

If not, click on my user name in this post and see if the contact button is available there.
Once I have your email address I can send you the file as an attachment.
Using simulation mode on your Nuvi you can test it.

Here's What I've Done So Far.

OK, I have the contact checked in my profile. I even figured out how to put my picture up. OK, here's the deal........ The POI's loaded ok. It does work when I reach 1320ft from the red light camera. No problem there. However under CUSTOM POI, SOUND, there are no options other than, SINGLE BEEP, CONTINUOUS BEEP, and OFF. I was expecting to have the option of which WAV I wanted to use with the custom POI, namely, the Red Light Cameras, but there is nothing in this file but the BEEPS. I haven't tried the 200ft zoom yet, so that's why I'm not seeing a BMP file popup. I would have never figured that one out. How can I choose which WAV I want to play for the alert? Or is it random only? Thats whats got me confused right now.

Meredith

File Seems To Be Working

It appears your file is working properly.
You CANNOT select which custom POI file will receive the alert, it's all or nothing.
For those custom POI files you don't want to have an audible alert simply don't add a wave file when you create the POI.

Just leave the unit set at single beep since selecting continuous can be annoying.

Try zooming in and the bmp should appear.

It sounds like you now have success on loading the custom pois. The problem now seems to be on the alert side.Your post says you get the default alert not the sound alert using the wav file. You need to re-check the process you use for the voice alerts per http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .The biggest problem is with double extensions for most new users.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41141 and change as necessary before you start over again .Then double check that your csv,bmp and wav file are name the same except for the extensions.Shorten the name and make it simple by the renaming method.Example
Red Light camera.csv
Red Light camera.bmp
Red Light camera.wav

Make sure you downloaded the correct sox.exe from here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 and unzip it before installing in the Poi Loader folder.

A few notes as stated on earlier posts. Once you install your custom pois on the GPS unit using Poi Loader they are converted to one gpi file.Once you associate a bmp and wav file to the csv or gpx file.It applies to each and every poi in that file. You don't select one and do it manually on the gps.If installed correctly the alert will work. Of course you have to be at least 50 to 75 ft from the coordinates when you pass the poi for the alert to sound and have set the alert distance using manual mode. The Red Light and Speed cameras will not be a problem since most coordinates are located in the center of the road. The bmp files will show on the map under certain conditions see https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?... and https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

You only get to select single or continuous alert. If you select one of the single pois you have alert set for.Right before you select go touch the i on the left of GO and you will see alert information on the screen and will also see the bmp if installed correctly. This check will not work with TourGuide.

The alert sound is chosen

during the loading process. What ever .wav file is named the same as the POI file will be used for that POI. So if you are just getting the default alert sound your .wav file has not been loaded properly.

--
:260W, 50LM

Still No WAV sound

Ok, so far I have loaded the POI with a BMP and a WAV. I went down to the Red Light Camera to see what would happen. I zoomed in to 200ft. The Alert went off at 1320ft and the BMP came on, but only a BEEP. no WAV was played even though I loaded one in with the POI.

There's a lot about this stuff I haven't quite figured out. I thought I could make the BMP larger, but its only used for an ICON. looks like possibly 32X32. So whatever is in the GPS is not going to let a larger BMP be displayed. I noticed that the BANNER at the top of the page (the visual alert)is a gray background. I would assume that there is no way to change the background color or text color of that either. A red background would be desirable with maybe black or yellow text. This is probably built into the hardware or firmware. Garmin isn't too good about listening to it's customers. They've had more complaints than Carter has pills, and they just ignore everyone. So I would imagine that none of the GPS units are going to let you change too much because it could infringe on a copyright, but I could go on and on, but it won't change reality. How I'm going to make the Sound work on this unit is beyond me. Anymore suggestions? I'm open to them.

It's been a while

It's been a while but I seem to remember having the same problems when I first got my 3590.
If I remember correctly I ended up downloading both the .wav and .mp3 sound files to the unit and it then worked. For some reason I think it needed the mp3.
Good luck!

The 3590 is unable to play MP3 files as are none of the newer units. POI loader had to use the .wav file that made it work.

@meredith

We are missing something about your setup that is keeping us from determining what your problem is. So, please let us know

Assuming you are on a PC
1. What operating system are you running?
2. What folder did POI Loader install itself into when you downloaded it from Garmin? [it is usually Program files (x86)]
3. Did you download sox.exe from
http://www.poi-factory.com/images/csv/sox-14-0-1.zip
4. Did you unzip sox.zip and copy the executable sox.exe to the folder containing POI Loader?
5. Have you gone through the "View" tab of "Folder Options" and unchecked the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types"?
6. Where did you get the .wav file?
7. Is the name of the .wav file identical to the name of the red light file (except for the extension)?
8.What other files are in the folder with the red light camera file you downloaded from poi-factory?

It should support poi files

It should support poi files

My Setup

I've done everything according to instructions, except I did not name the files the same as the red light camera file except for the extension. I went back and changed everything and renamed the WAV and the BMP. I just went back up to the red light camera, and the same thing occurred. NO sound played except for the default beep.

When I downloaded the file from Garmin and installed it, it installed to the following directory: C:\Program Files\Garmin\POI Loader.

I had no control over where it put the file and there was no option available to change the install directory.

The WAV files are good. I've played them all and they all sound fine. The BMP files are good. I opened them up and they are ok too. I just can't understand why the sound file won't play.

One thing that may be a problem is; The sox.exe zipped unzips so fast I can't tell where it's extracting to. That might be the issue. I may be putting a zipped sox file in the POI directory.

Tell me what you think. I'm still scratching my head.

Meredith

Sox

I just sent the cameras back for you to test. The unzipped extracted sox.exe goes in the Poi Loader folder .Click on your main drive.Click on Program (x86),click on Garmin Folder, click on Poi Loader Folder.Inside that folder you will see many files one being POI Loader.exe. Right click on any blank area in the folder and paste the extracted copy of sox.exe there.

I would suggest you put the downloaded sox-14-0-1.zip file into some known folder on your computer.

http://www.poi-factory.com/images/csv/sox-14-0-1.zip

Without knowing what system you are running, I can not give more specific directions. In any event, find the downloaded file and unzip it in whatever folder you find it.

Then, as Charlie indicates, copy sox.exe and navigate to the folder where POI Loader was installed. Since you said C:\Program Files\Garmin\POI Loader and Charlie and I are thinking Program Files (x86), what you might do is to - before the copy - do a Start > Programs > navigate to POI Loader and - rather than left clicking - do a right click and select "Properties" from the dialog that will appear. This will tell you where the POI Loader that you have been executing is located.

WHOOPIE ! ! ! ! IT WORKS! ! !

It all works fine. Just went up to the red light camera and the sound works fine. Scared the hell out of me when it went off. I appreciate the help, but still have a few questions;

Can I make a bitmap file to use, and if so what dimensions does it have to be, 32X32....?

Also, just curious, can the Alert Banner at the top of the GPS be changed in any way? ie; Background color, Text Color, etc?

Can I change the WAV file as long as I rename it the same as the camera file?

The background screen colors on Garmin devices cannot be adjusted or changed. However, you can switch between Daytime or Nighttime color mode options.

To adjust this option, follow the steps below:

nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 700, 705, 800, 805, 1000, 2200, 2300, 2400, 3700, 5000 series, zumo 220, 660, 665, dezl 560 series, LIVE 1695, and LIVE 2300 series devices

Changing the color mode to Daytime gives you a white background to improve visibility during daylight hours.

Changing the color mode to Nighttime darkens the background to prevent the screen from being too bright or distracting when driving in the dark.

Changing the color mode to Auto allows the device to automatically change the color mode based on sunrise and sunset times. This is the default color mode setting.

In addition to the color mode, some automotive devices allow you to change the colors used on the map screen by using map themes. For more information on which devices allow this and how to change the map theme being used, please view the following article: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={0516a870-d646-11df-c826-000000000000}

The 32x32 works well. The camera bmp by Poi Factory is 32x32 and it looks great on my 2597.Seen posts others have made some larger with success.

Once you find the correct wav file you want for your csv or gpx file yes you can just rename it to match the csv or gpx file except extensions.

Bitmaps are recommended to be 24 x 24 but I understand that newer models allow larger bmps.

The color of the alert banner is fixed in the firmware.

Yes, you can use any .wav file that strikes your fancy. See Create Your Own Sound File
