Registering A Used Garmin Nuvi

I know that this has been discussed here in the past, but I am just looking for any recent experienced from fellow members in this regard. I just bought a used Garmin Nuvi, but when I went to register it, I found out that it has already been registered. I have read in the past that people have simply contacted Garmin, explained the situation, and sent a copy of the proof of purchase and they are allowed to register the device in their name. Does anybody happen to know if that policy remains in effect or has something changed? I did buy it on Ebay, so I hope proof from their will suffice.

It

It maybe easier to contact the E-Bay seller and ask that he deregister the Nuvi. This will allow you to register it in your name.

At one time Garmin did not offer any assistance for devices purchased over E-Bay but they may have changed that policy over the years.

Give us a report

Report back to us if you call Garmin with your results. My guess is that your odds of success are less than 50%.*

If the eBay seller was the owner who had registered it first, contact them and have them unregister the nuvi from Garmin's myGarmin web site.

And for future eBay buyers of Garmin devices, I suggest contacting the seller and only buying the used device if the seller was the first owner and had unregistered the device. Otherwise, you may never be able to register it in your name or add lifetime maps, etc. Note, too, that anyone selling a used nuvi claiming it has lifetime maps is incorrect--the only way that would work is for the registered owner to give you their account name and password and even then, that's not acceptable in Garmin's eyes, I believe. (I just checked the LM Terms and Conditions and it's not clear to me from reading it if lifetime maps can be transferred when a used GPS with LM is sold.)

If unregisterable in your name, you may want to contact the seller for a return or kick in eBay Buyer Protection assuming the seller didn't disclose the status of the device in the item's listing.

Alternatively, since you really need a 3x0 series for your intended use, one option is to not register it and only use the current outdated City Navigator map that's on the device or add one of the many free Garmin-compatible topo or other non-Garmin maps to the device.

Garmin is pretty clear that Lifetime Maps WOULD be available to the purchaser of a used Nuvi even if the old owner hadn't deregistered the device, see:

Called Garmin

I bought a Nuvi from a friend a few years ago who decided he didn't need it anymore cause of smartphones. I called Garmin and they told me I needed his email address and password. He emailed it to me and I forwarded it to Garmin and they let me reset the registration on it.

I would try calling them and see if you can fax a bill of sale or receipt. They are pretty understanding.

Ah, good to know. It'd be nice if this were part of the lifetime maps Terms and Conditions:

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/prod33379.html

Click Requirements, then Downloads, then drop down to Terms and Conditions. I see nothing covering the subject here although it does clearly state that LM can't be transferred to the original buyer's new device...

Registering A Used Garmin Nuvi

I was able to reach the seller and he promptly unregistered the Garmin Nuvi 360 and I have now registered it under my name, so all is good again. Thank you!

Glad

Glad you were able to get things fixed up. grin
