Deleting custom POIs (POI Files) on a nuvi 755T

Hello All,

It's been several years since I've been really active on POI factory but I'm returning now for help. It's been ages since I used POI loader, but did put quite a few custom POI files on to my nuvi 755T. One of those was the red light camera file from POI factory several years ago. Obviously, that data is *way* out of date and I'm still receiving proximity alerts for same when I travel.

I cannot recall how to remove these files and the information being returned by the web searches I've performed hasn't been at all illuminating.

If anyone can point me to directions, preferably step-by-step directions, for eradicating outdated POIs under Custom POIs I would be very grateful.

Brian

You

You will probably have a file in the GPI folder on the Nuvi called POI.GPI. This file contains all of the POIs that appear on your 755 and was created by POIloader.

Inside the poi.gpi file are all the POIs you have loaded, including the red light camera file you want to replace. The problem is that I don't think you can simply pull out that one file and replace it with a new one. You'll need to run POIloader again, picking up all the csv and gpx files you want to keep as POIs as well as your updated red camera file to create a new poi.gpi file for your Nuvi.

Hi Brian, and welcome back.

Since it has been several years since you used POI Loader, you should get the latest version from Garmin - v2.7.2 for PC and v2.2.2 for Mac. There is a good set of instructions on doing the entire POI Loader process at
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/85

BUT WAIT - why don't you do a backup of the unit right now before you delete anything. If you are unsure on how to do that, then see
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

To specifically answer your questions, there are several ways to delete the .gpi files in your 755T (mine is a 765T).

Once you have attached your 755 to the computer and done a backup, you can simply delete the .gpi files in the [nuvi]:\Garmin\POI folder,

or,

the new POI LOader will offer to delete all the old .gpi files on the fourth screen of its dialog. If you take that option it will delete all the files and then you will do another run to load new files.

I am not sure whether you can immediately access the latest camera files since you have been away for a while. If one of the .gpi files is just the cameras, then it could be left on your 755. However, the earlier versions of POI Loader would create one and only one output file and its name was poi.gpi. Sometime people went into their unit and renamed it to something else (which worked fine) and then did another POI Loader run for other POI files. That was always my process with older POI Loader versions.

Start small!! Load something you can test out to make sure you have the process down. Once you are comfortable - have at it.

Let us know how you do, please

Another Tip

You may also want to consider loading the RedLight Camera POI separately from any other POI's.
This will make it easier for you to update the file without having to go throught the bother of creating one large POI file. I separate the files I update more frequently to ease the task of updating.
By naming it Redlight Cameras.gpi will make it simple to identify in your POI folder.

Thanks to all for your

Thanks to all for your input. It's been a crazy week and I haven't had a chance to check back since posting. It's truly gratifying to receive this level of support.

Just FYI, all of my various POI files were loaded as separate entities. When you go into custom POIs each file shows up as its own "category" in the list of custom POIs.

I'll have to download the latest version of POI loader and see what I can do. I'll report back afterward.
