How to register your garmin?

Is there a way to register your garmin nuvi at the garmin website? it said my gps already registered.
bought it used...

Garmin registration

You'll have to get the former user to delete the registration from their profile. When that's done, you can register it.

Edit:

I think that's just another way to keep stolen GPS units from being up-graded.

Yep. That's the only way. The previous owner needs to call Garmin.

Hassle

What a hassle. I've thought about getting a used one, but now I'm buying a new one.

As stated above, it's to prevent someone from registering a stolen unit.

It's for our protections.

Thanks!

Thanks for the useful information!

well i didnt know.... i

well i didnt know.... i thought you can go online and update..... but you cant beat it for $50 for nuvi 760

So is it stolen?

Why not contact Garmin and find out who the owner is and get them to unregister it so you can. Very easy.

Well, not to belabor this subject, but if the seller was the actual registered owner, then he can call Garmin and have the registration transferred to you.

Guy needs money?
Not 4 me to judge, but something smells spoiled, oh I mean fishy!!!
Maybe I should check your Reg. #, but what are the chances that it could be the one I had stolen.
I had mine stolen a few months ago (760)and had to buy a new one, now I look on the bright side.
I have a 885T which I dismount from it's cradle EVERYTIME I leave my vehicle

How to register your garmin?

I hear they are being stolen often where I live, even in broad daylight. I have read not to save your home address at the Home site for this reason. But it's hard to remember to hide it. I have seen some with a hat on it. You think "look at the GPS covered with a hat." Who has hats with a black wire coming out of it???

If you sell your Garmin GPS

If you sell your Garmin GPS can you sell the lifetime maps with it making it a better deal or is it only good to original purchaser?
epilare

No.

The Lifetime Maps Update is not transferable to another person nor to another GPS unit.

Amazon

Just purchased a reconditioned 765T from Amazon.com. I am assuming it came directly from Garmin as a official reconditioned model. When I attempted to register, I found it was already registered by the previous owner. I guess Garmin does not bother eliminating the prior registration or has no way of knowing who the previous owner was.

Be ready to provide a copy of your receipt

From many other discussions about this on this forum, be ready to send an electronic copy of your receipt to Garmin. If it was an "official" refurb they should allow the re-registration.

registering in another country

I have a registration related question.

I have purchased my Garmin GPS for use in North America recently from Amazon, and had it delivered to where I currently reside which is Korea. I will need to register the device before use thru Garmin's internet site, but I am not sure whether I need to register it while I am physically in US or Canada with the device. I will be in Canada in several weeks from now, to use the GPS.

Is there a risk that if I register the device here in Asia, the device will be registered automatically for use in the country where I registered it? If so, I will need to wait until I am in Canada or US.

Can anyone help me?

JK

What matters...

is what maps are on the device. I don't think it will make any difference where you are when you register the device. If it doesn't have North America maps, it won't work for you while you are in Canada or US.

Actually, there is no requirement to register the device with Garmin at all unless you intend to update maps or software.

Does this mean that if I purchased a unit from someone and they officially had it transferred to me, would or would not that include the lifetime maps for that unit? What if I purchased from Garmin?

It would mean the LT updates (assuming the unit is NOT an LM) would be cancelled when the registration was transferred.

Long answer

If the original owner does not cancel or transfer the registration, then the unit can continue to be updated by the new owner simply by loading Garmin Express or Map Updater. Updates for the LM units is NOT tied to a registered owner so the ability to update transfers with the unit.

@ jbees60

You simply overlooked the post you quoted that was done awhile back ago and that Garmin's policy has changed since then.

The second to last paragraph from this Garmin FAQ confirms the above.
