POI Icons Do Not Display -- Help Please

I downloaded several poi custom icons from the icon library on this site. I made sure the file names match the poi csv file name, except for extension. I followed the steps given here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/4359

But my nuvi 2460 displays only the default gray dot. This is the case in all views. How do I get the custom icons to display?

Using software version 3.30, firmware 2.89. Map is 2013.40 ALL. Map Detail is set to "most". Map Data Layout is set to "More Data".

Thanks.

What map scale

The only thing I can think of this early in the morning is that you may have the map scale too high.
Try dropping the map scale down to 300-500 ft and see if they show up !

did you have to add

Did you have to add the extension to the file name? MM's instructions are very good but she doesn't really explain that the most common problem is a double extension.

Agreed

See section on computer settings:

File Size/Resolution

I seem to remember having a similar issue once and I think the problem was the file size/resolution.

I would hope...

While it is often an issue, I would hope that file size/resolution problems would not apply to any Icon downloaded from this site.

Usually, the problem is having to be zoomed in to 250 feet or less resolution. Many people think that Icons should show up at the default resolution but that is not the case. My 765T default resolution is .2 miles - so it takes several presses of the "+" button (800ft, 500ft, 300ft, 200ft) to see any icons.

I hope perpster will give us a report. Since he has been on the site for several years, I doubt that the problem is double extensions (but one always needs to check that one's settings are set according to http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393 as CraigW has already indicated).

.

I neglected in the OP to say that it was occuring at 200 foot scale, which is the level at which icons normally appear on my 2460. Interestingly, the RLC icon DOES show up, but none of the other icons. Only the default gray dots show up. All of the other "missing" icons were downloaded from POI Factory. The same situation occurs at 100 foot scale as well.

There are no double extensions. I copied and pasted the csv file name left of the period, so there are no typing errors.

So for instance, there's a Walmart_United States & Canada.bmp file and a Walmart_United States & Canada.csv file next to each other in the same folder.

If the grey dot is showing, then the Custom POI locations are loaded to the device correctly it would seem.

The next logical choice is not naming the BMP files correctly.

Since you say that you "copied and pasted" the file names, that likely can be ruled out.

So, pretty much the only thing left is double file extensions.

Double/TRIPLE check that you don't have double file extensions. MAKE SURE that you computer is showing (ie NOT HIDING) extensions of known file types.

Definitely not extension naming issue. I also checked via File Properties dialogue box.

Could it have something to do with the folder structure on my pc? The RLC csv and bmp are in their own folder, and they show up at 200 ft scale or higher zoom. The others are in a few various other folders, none of which exceed the 32 file maximum per folder. For example, most of the others are in a sub-folder called "Stores" inside a sub-folder called "Other". They are csv and bmp files such as McDonalds, 7/11, Walmart, Walgreens.

BTW, fwiw, the nuvi 2460 has 2.42 GB free space.

How many levels?

You can have only one level of sub-folders under the folder to which you have pointed POI Loader. I can't really tell based on your description but it sounds like two level of sub-folders.

Let us know.

Hmmm. Maybe this is the problem. I will put my folder structure below, but with the 32 files per folder limit, does that mean the most POI files you can have is 64? Does the limit apply to each file type (csv, gpx, bmp) individually, or total file count regardless of file type? IIRC, I created this structure because of an error message about too many files in a folder when loading POIs to the nuvi.

Custom POI File
5 subfolders:
-Other
-RLC
-RR Stuff
-Speed Cameras
-Speet Traps

The "Other" subfolder has 6 subfolders (and about 15 csv files):
-Car Related
-Marine
-Military
-Non-Local Misc
-Parks
-Stores

There are no other subfolders.

Ok, back up

Each sub-folder can have 32 file sets (.csv/.gpx, .bmp, .mp3/.wav). You can have 32 sub-folders

Move all of the folders now in the "Other" folder into the "Custom POI File" folder and then delete the empty "Other" folder. Point POI Loader to "Custom POI File" folder and run again. You should not lose any "categories" except "Other".

I would also suggest deleting all .gpi files before doing this run.

Let us know.

Success!

Success! That did the trick. Thanks to all!

BTW, does this mean that whenever a poi file is updated with a name change, one must manually rename the icon file as well? For example, the Rest Area file goes up by a letter each update (such as AA to AB). So must one change the .bmp file manually if one wants to keep using the same custom icon?

or

Or you just save the updated file as the same name you already have in your folder used by POI Loader. That's what I do, but then I also convert it to GPX so I can use EPE to add my proximity. That way everything loads using the express mode.
