3790 goes black

And when I push the on button it will say its loading maps, the make a noise and turn off again. It will do this at least seven or eight times both attached to the car charger or with battery then at least up to now will start up again and continue to work. This has happened several times. Any ideas as to cause?

It sounds as if the battery is dead. Connect the unit to your computer with a USB cable and charge it that way. Then check the fuse in the tip of your car charger cable.

Hard Reset?

Follow Box Car's instructions to fully charge the battery, and verifying the 12V power chord is charging. Once completed, if the problem persists, backup your favorites file(current.gpx), then try a hard reset.

Not buying the dead Battery. No Battery used in the Car charger. The noise i've heard before in one of my older units, don't remember what i did about it. I'm heading towards a software issue. Did you do an update of some sort and it crashed or it did not finish?

Again, you didn't tell what it is you did. Try to remember when it started to hick-up. Either way, if it happened to me I would use one of my latest full backup and restore it. Probably quicker. Then do the updates again. Grab your favorites before you do so, just in case they are not all in your backup.

.

Do you have a microSD card installed? If so, do you have maps loaded on the card? The card could be corrupted.

Maps on unit

I did do a full shut off rather than let it sleep as it usually does when you turn the car off. The battery is full. Had just gotten off the road after six hundred miles. I think something in the software gets tangled up. It did start after ten or eleven attempts. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this kind of problem. Worked fine the rest of the way. I'm not going to do a full shut. Off again.

When you say "full shut off", what do you mean? Are you doing a "Master Reset" or just turning the unit "off"?

@Geochapman:I have a 3790

@Geochapman:
I have a 3790 and have being following topics that have any connection with this model but haven't experienced or heard anybody else complaining about anything similar like your problem.
@ jgermann:
Nuvi 3790 goes to sleep mode when power gets disconnected or when power on/off button is pressed. This way it is ready to use without regular booting cycle as soon as power is connected. To turn the unit entirely off you have to keep pressed on/off button for a few seconds and confirm it on the following prompt.

Thank you

Thank you for the explanation. I think doing a full shutoff seems to confuse this unit. I wondered if anyone else had this happen.

@geochapman

You have not told us whether you have tried a Master Reset as suggested above.

Instructions are at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30019

@geochapman

I did a google search for "3790t won't turn on" and found a report by a user (Angie-B) on another site who had a situation that appears somewhat similar to yours.

After turning her unit off following a software update, Angie-B's 3790 reportedly would hang on one of the initial screens.

Like you, she also reported "Problem solved. Kept turning the unit on and off repeatedly until it had enough and decided to boot in. Don't know why..."

She further reported that "When I got access to the main screens again on my 3790T, I did a master reset. Then I reloaded the sotware using webupdater. Since then, the unit has been working much better."

Like Angie-B's unit, it could be a corrupt file that is causing issues with your 3790. With any master reset, restoration and/or update of any recently installed software, be sure you follow all directions carefully.

I have not done that as per your notes. I will wait and see if this becomes a bigger problem. Your instructions seem a bit drastic.

I wouldn't consider a Master Reset (hard reset) as "a bit drastic", this procedure is know to fix many Nuvi issues. I do it all the time whenever I do a software update. It should only take 5 minutes to do.

You will need to back up your favorites which you should always do. Then once the reset is completed you will have to tweak whatever settings you made to the Nuvi.

To properly troubleshoot issues there are steps to take to rule out possibilities of the cause. The Master Reset is one of those early steps.

Hopefully you will reconsider and follow the instructions at the link jgermann provided.
Let us know how you make out.

I agree. It's nowhere near being "drastic" and if it fixes your issue, you're gonna kick yourself for not trying it sooner. As was mentioned, this simple procedure could prevent you from having to send the unit in for "service" or having to live with an issue that may be easily corrected.

We talk about backing up all the time in here. There's many a post on why you should do it. You are one of them. I was probably too. Like I said in my earlier post, I don't fool around, anything goes weird i just restore one of several complete Images I have of my units. I'm guessing from all these posts, you are having issues with this. I'm also guessing you don't have a complete Unit Back-up. It won't happen to me!...> It just did. sad
