Back to the basics (select a town?)

I travel for work across the Midwest. Many of my visits are very rural. Some one stole my last Garmin 2 weeks ago but I had to go out this week. Bought what was available at shopko. 50 lm

1200 mile loop Wisconsin, missouri, illinois Iowa. I jump from town to town buying lumber from local producers. Is there a way to just select a town on the new version. I wasn't sucessful and ended up in places where banjos were playing in the background. The device wants absolute coordinates to work. Will not accept just a town name. Had to pick a house /street address from the list and ended up in strange locations. A horse may have walked there before.

You should

You should be able to select any town by entering:

Where To? - Cities

You'll get a list of town, villages, cites, etc. that are the nearest to you. Probably 50 or more will be listed.

If you don't see the one your looking for, tap the magnifying glass in the upper left corner of the screen and enter the place your looking for and press Done. A list of town and cities matching your entered selection will appear. The list will include places in the full map coverage area, not just near your current location.

Note that selecting any city name will result in a route being calculated to the town center or a prominent place like City Hall.

Can you use Google Earth?

What if you find your destination in Google Earth by entering its address then make a custom POI that'll take you right to their driveway?

I Tried Entering City

Device would not allow me to just enter a city. Would force going to absolute address. Center of the town would be great. Some of the rural areas I travel have addresses 20 miled from town.

I will try the magnifying glass.

Don't know the 50LM, but have you tried
Where To? > Near (which on my 765T is a blue button in the center bottom)

When I select "Near", it gives me several options
> Where I Am Now
> A Different City
> My Current Route
> My Destination

Try Easy POI Editor

I would suggest that you get a copy of Easy POI Editor and create a list of the businesses that you visit. I drive a parts van, part time, for a car dealer. I have created a list of customers that are more difficult to find or that I visit infrequently.

In your case, you might only have to enter the city name, let EPE geocode it, and then drag the indicator out to the specific location on the map.

I usually do this and go to satellite mode so that I can see the exact location.

@slpsawdust, EPE would seem to be the perfect tool for you to use. It's free. It will certainly do what you need it to do.
