downloading sounds

Where do I download sounds? Do i put them all in one folder in POI Garmin downloadsfolder or do I load each one individually in the POI folder? On my old nuvi 760 I had them in one folder in POI garmin Downloads and they worked great now I have a nuvi 1390 even though I converted them to .wav files they dont work. If the sounds are in a folder does the folder have to be named the same as the red light file?

In each folder regardless of what you name it, all the files must be named the same. Example. I have a folder called Costco. In that folder are 3 files ,Costco_USA_Canada.wav Costco_USA_Canada.bmp and Costco_USA_Canada.csv
Poi loader will load these folders and the files in it

Wav files

Are you saying that if I have a folder for baseball parks with all the parks in that folder and if I want an voice alert sound when approaching a park listed in that folder I have to put the .WAV file in the baseball parks folder.Is that correct?

Just checking on what you have.

You should have one file (either .csv or .gpx) containing all of the baseball parks - like the .csv file from http://www.poi-factory.com/node/756.

The name of this file is:
"Baseball parks.csv"

Lets say that you put this in a folder called "Baseball Parks". To get voice alerts you would also want a file called "Baseball parks.wav" in the Baseball Parks folder.

Then you would point POI Loader (in manual mode) to the folder Baseball Parks with a proximity distance of whatever distance you want.

Although you did not say so, I am wondering if you really want TourGuide type alerts. Take a look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36539 or http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13958 to see if that is what you want.

Have you installed the sox.exe? See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 to get the correct one.

For custom pois set up see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721

.WAV files

Yes I have installed Sox. However I'm sill confused on how to and where to install it. The confusing part is when I download sox it goes into my computers download folder. Do I extract it there or do I move it to another folder and then extract it and move it to POI download folder? also, do you move evertything extracted as and the sox.exe application? All instructions on this cite state to move it to POI loader which you cannot do. POI Loader is an applicaction.

Its confusing when you have an application called POI LOADER and a folder called POI DOWNLOADS.

It really doesn't matter

It really doesn't matter where you unzip or extract the sox.exe file on the computer. Once extracted right click it and select copy. On Windows xp go to c drive then Program Files, Garmin folder, and then click on the POI Loader folder. Paste copy of sox.exe there in the same location where PoiLoader exe is located per http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

The biggest problems with the alerts not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double etensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.

In a nutshell.. Yes
Everything that the other guys said is also true.
Make sure you have sox.exe. Make sure it's in the same folder where you installed poi loader. Make sure you don't double up on the extenions..example
ballpark.wav.wav<<<<<< not correct
ballpark.wav<<<<<<< correct

Its confusing when you have an application called POI LOADER and a folder called POI DOWNLOADS.

Earlier in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39005 you asked for "step-by-step instructions" on downloading sound files and putting SOX in the correct location on your computer. There were several responses along with this list of instructions:

Quote:

The key things you need to know for getting WAV sound files to work using Windows are:

1. The ONLY version of SOX.exe that will work is 14.0.1;

2. SOX.exe MUST be in the same folder as poiloader.exe;

3. Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, then select View and BE CERTAIN Show Hidden Files, Folders and drives is selected. You MUST be certain Hide Extensions for Known File Types IS UNCHECKED;

4. The POI file, Icon, and sound file are in the same folder with EXACTLY the same name except for a SINGLE extension of 3 characters;

5. POI Loader is executed AND you have either used the manual mode to set speed or proximity for any CSV file or added a speed or proximity setting within any GPX file;

6. POI Loader reports it has successfully loaded all your input files by giving you a count of the number of individual locations in all your files;

7. You have gone into the SETTINGS for your unit and enabled PROXIMITY ALERTS.

As a final note, you can use the manual mode in POI Loader to specify a proximity or speed for a GPX file or it can be included within the file.

There are two simple answers to your confusion about POI LOADER and POI DOWNLOADS. One is to change the name of the folder where you store the POI, icons and sounds. The second is once SOX is installed into the program folder containing poiloader.exe is you don't need it again, so stop downloading it.

I used the free open source audacity software to record my own voice for the red light camera and speed camera warning.

not case sensitive

It seems that at one time in the past that POI Loader required that each of the (potentially) three files (POIs, Icon, sound) for a POI be the same case. However, that is not currently true.

Anyone can easily test this for themselves by taking any poi-factory file that has entries within a mile or so from their home location so that they can quickly do a Simulation of a route PAST that location. If you have never tried a Simulation, then please look at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31482.

The character strings of the two or three file must be the same but the case does not matter.

Also, note that it is very easy to use EPE to create test files around your own home. The points of interest can be random and/or fictitious - the sound files do not have to match anything (all you want to know is that they alert) - and the Icon can be anything - all you want to see is if it shows up under 300 feet or less zoom.

Note that TourGuide is a "keyword" of sorts and must have a capital "T" and a capital "G"

It has been some time at

It has been some time at least 2 years or more that it was posted about the case didn't matter. MM may have been the one who posted on it. Most everybody agreed to just use the same case to avoid confusion.

Thanks, jg and charles and maybe MM. I somehow missed that memo and until reading these posts today would have given out incorrect too-restrictive instructions.

Now I just need to remember this wink

perhaps

Perhaps, but it does make for easier troubleshooting for those that lack experience in adding sound files.

I agree. Especially if newbies or even semi-newbies then assume a TourGuide is a Tourguide is a tourguide...

Good point

Usually, I am careful in my replies to questions to use character strings that are identical in case as well as characters - for the reasons espoused. In my post above, I did not check my case, as I should have.

However, the more advanced users do need to be aware that case sensitivity is no longer required - so they can concentrate on other pertinent aspects of some questioner's problem.

Winner.

And we have a winner!
