Excel vs gpx

I would like to download POI files for my Garmin 2595. Some files are available in .CSV and some are in .GPX files. Will either work in my Garmin? Can I convert the .gpx to excel? Will Excel work in a Garmin?

Nuvi 3790LMT, Nuvi 760 Lifetime map, Lifetime NavTraffic, Garmin E-Trex Legend Just because "Everyone" drives badly does not mean you have to.

Faq

Download either the csv or gpx file from here at The Factory. Then use POI Loader to install them to your nuvi 2595:

The previous replies have pointed you to useful FAQs.

.gpx files can not be read directly by Excel. However, one of our members (TurboCC) has written an excellent piece of software called Extra POI Editor (EPE) which can manipulate either .csv or .gpx and convert from one to another.

Recall that .csv is one of the file types recognized by Excel. Excel is available to most users so that is, perhaps, why POI Loader originally decided to accept that type of file.

Many of us just prefer EPE because of the extra functionality it provides. FAQ about EPE can be found at

Load GPX into Excel

You can load a GPX file into Excel to "play" with the info yourself if you are familiar with Excel. Right click on the GPX file and select Open With. Excel should be listed as a choice. If not there click on Choose Program and path your way to Excel. As the file loads, a pop-up will display saying something to the affect that the file is in a different format....open file now? Answer Yes then OK or Yes to each succeeding pop-up. After the file has loaded make sure you have an extra Sheet and copy the information of interest to the new sheet. I copy then Paste Special using, VALUES, all of the information I want from each column of interest. Do Not copy and paste the entire column - just the contents of the column being sure to start and stop at the same row numbers from each column so your data will match in the new Sheet (Long, Lat, Name, Description). When done mmanipulating your data, do a Save As and select CSV for the format. If you have ASAP loaded in your Excel, it is a great tool to work with.
