I'm wondering when the next map update comes out, 2013.40, what will happen if I take my split-screen JCV file from my 2460 and use it on my 855 in place of the default full-screen jcv file with few JVs. I'd have tried it now except that I was able to download rame1012's 2013.30 dropbox JCV file before dropbox suspended downloads.

I'm not aware of anyone reporting their trying the split-screen JCV on a full-screen model although many have tried--and some prefer--using the full-screen JCV file on a split-screen-enabled nuvi.

In a worst case scenario, Garmin in the future could create model-specific JCV files (as they do map-update-version-specific JCV files now) that won't work in other GPS models and that'd shutdown all manual JCV file installations by users.

I tried it when Garmin first started automatically installing the 50MB file on units instead of the full file that users used to get. The end result of loading a split-screen JCV onto the unit will be that the image will stretch to fit the screen. It's readable, but not terribly attractive as the image is rather fuzzy and pixelated due to the stretching.

Darn, I was afraid of exactly that issue. I guess I'll remain dependent upon folks with nuvi 7x5 map updates to offer the JCV file to us in the future.

Split Screen JCV

Does anyone have an understanding of why, even when there is plenty of storage available, the larger split screen JCV file is not downloaded during update?

I have a 2370 that I have installed the Europe maps to SD card giving me over 2gb free internal. When I recently updated to NA 2013.30 my large file of 400+mb was removed in favor of a JCV of around 150mb.

This really makes no sense when there is 2gb free. I know the large file exists but it won't be installed during update. If Garmin has all this junction data why wouldn't they give it to you? Am I missing something incredibly obvious?

BTW, I've been lurking here for a few months and have learned much from all the helpful members of this forum. Thanks to all of you. Scotty

Nuvi 1350 North America version and JCV?

Using Garmin Map Updater, I was able to load 2013.30 onto an SD, which uses 1.6GB on the card, then 200MB or so of basemap and such stays on unit. Whatever map that remained on unit was wiped by installer.

I see talks about JCV, but I don't even see a JCV folder inside the system folder.

Can I use JCV with 1350? How do I go about installing it once I get my hands on the large file? Can someone help me out? That link still is getting me to bandwidth exceeded error.

Out of luck

Your 1350 does not have the junction view feature.

The large JCV is back! (For now)

For folks looking for the large jcv file offered by rame1012 (the 774,550 KB full screen JCV file in a 756.4MB zip file to be used with the current 2013.30 map update), I just checked and dropbox is again allowing downloads of it:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mka71p3saa16il6/qqiYV2tIxJ

Hurry, though, as after some number of downloads, dropbox will likely again suspend access to the file.

Good luck all.

Thanks!

It downloaded just fine.

This lack of

no large JCV file going forward irritates me. Part of my decision when I purchased my device was "LMT" and the Junction View feature.

I see my only option going forward is no more map updates unless someone can turn up the large JCV file and share it sad

Look back two messages from yours....

Craig,

thanks for your reply. Somebody else gave me access to the new file last week and it's working well. I'm just thinking about the next update and whether we'll have any access to the large JCV file.

The dropbox mentioned has 3GB limit per month.
PS: On my recent trip to TN AR KY & Branson MO, I was impressed with all of the photo-real images. Some of the non-interstate highways also displayed junction views.

Yowser, that's only about four downloads per month. I wonder how I managed to be one of them when it was first posted.

This definitely isn't a great solution given the number of us needing the file. Bummer.

Perhaps I mis-spoke

But only because I don't understand.
Dropbox still shows I have 757MB used of 3GB. I see that at least 7 people have downloaded my shared file. Does that mean that I can HOST 3GB of files each month?
Rame1012 writes that he plans to leave the current JCV file up until the new one is released.

I found this in dropbox's support section:

Bandwidth limits

Links that use up more than 20 GB/day for Basic (free) accounts and 200 GB/day for Pro and Teams (paid) accounts are automatically suspended.

If your account hits our limit, we'll send an email notification to the email address registered with your account. Shared links will be temporarily disabled, and those who try to access the links will see an error page instead of your file.

So it may be that 25+ folks can download the large JCV/ day with no problems. What I didn't see in the support faqs was any statement about how long a suspension will last once it's kicked in.

One option for us and future map updates would be to set up a support page using PayPal or something to contribute and let the host of the file download upgrade to a premium account that allows more activity per day.

I have 'Garmin Lifetime Updater'. It is an .exe program, and tied to the owner's specific Garmin GPS unit (with model number & serial number). I keep a shortcut of the 'Garmin Lifetime Updater' .exe program on my PC's desktop where I can just click on it and it will tell me if there are any map updates for my Garmin unit. Works like a charm!

Use Wiki, it's free

Or make a Wiki. You can put files there to download and the site is free.

One issue with the lifetime updater is it is an agent which sits running on your computer all the time consuming some (nominal but not zero) resources and must be loaded at every boot, but only needs to run four times a year.

And one other issue, if you're a routine Factory watcher

telecomdigest2 wrote:

One other issue is that for folks who routinely monitor the Garmin forum here (even if just around map update availability dates), users who are Factory readers will find out about and be able to use myGarmin/myDashboard to update their maps sooner than if they wait for Lifetime Updater to report a update's availability, almost without exception.

Additionally, for folks here with older nuvis that offer Junction View who get a tiny default JV with each map update, they can hold off on doing the update until they see that the large JCV file is available for manual installation to the new map update.

Thanks, going to try it out

JCV for Nuvi 50 / North America 2013.30

The correct JCV file for 2013.30 NA is D3478060A.JCV
Can be downloaded from torrent

http://torcache.net/torrent/363932BE921AB8F72BB8F64643FDB130...

Location in sd/garmin/jcv as usual.

Thanks but....

...yours is not the only correct JCV file, as you imply in your post. rame1012's file is just as correct, and likely to be more popular than yours. Reason?

rame1012's file provides photoreal junction views, meaning it looks like a camera image. Thus each image in the file takes up more data. Yours use a generic background and have elements added to the top of it, thus a smaller file size.

Thank you for the link however. Someone strapped for space will appreciate it.

It wouldn't work if you

It wouldn't work if you copied the .gmap folder as that is specifically for BaseCamp. Run MapInstall to copy the maps to the GPS.

Very interesting.... run mapsource and then use the built-in feature in Mapsource to put files on my GPS. How does it differnetiate between my GPS and a SD card ?

MapSource vs MapInstall

It's recommended to use MapSource over MapInstall. It's explained why and how to do the following in tutorial 5.

Here's another link explaining the same but which is somewhat easier in understanding.

Thanks, yes you are correct.. I was having issues so tried to simplify it. I looked at the above process on how to load from PC to SD card/GPS, it appeared to my simple mind to be more than I could handle. I will dl only to SD card with high speed connection.

Need help

I updated today on my 3790LMT using the express and then I looked at my JCV file on the unit and it showed D3191070A.JCV with a size of 448 KB. In reading this thread I found the large JCV file is D3060080A.JCV with a size of 774,500 KB. I downloaded that file from Drop box and thank you.

Question: Can I just delete the smaller JCV file from the device and replace it with the larger one by copying it from my PC or is there an installation necessary?

Thanks in advance for assistance.

It did download the new files, by the way I used the lifetime updater. It also deleted my older 2013.20 map on the device itself!

I figured this was a random fluke with my 255, so I tried it also on my 2555. My 2555 had enough memory to install to the GPS itself without a memory card.
Same result! Maps not working!

I'm not sure what is going on here. I tried a re-install that made no difference. I am trying another reinstall with the regular map updater downloaded from mygarmin.com instead of the lifetime updater.

I appreciate the response Elig99.

I had the same issue - no map shown... very frustrating! Yes using Garmin Express - after several tries, finally installed.
