Kenwood Files

I have a new Kenwood dnx6990hd with Garmin nav that I am still learning about. My last unit was a Garmin 255W that used the Cyclopes from Garmin for safety alerts. What files are needed to load safety cameras so it is setup like my old one ? I would like to have voice alerts but I do not know what format to use.

Owners manual

Welcome to The Factory!

The owners manual (The GPS manual, not the other owners manual) states on pp 26-27 that Custom POIs are loaded as they are for Garmin units, i.e., use POI Loader:

GPS:
http://www.kenwoodusa.com/UserFiles/File/UnitedStates/Consum...

Other:
http://manual.kenwood.com/files/4f98c9f920466.pdf

Regarding the cyclops, why not try the Redlight and Speed Camera files available here at The Factory? Once you get your "windmill," you'll have access to these files at no cost. If in a hurry, a small fee should get you immediate access to the files.

But first things first. Install POI Loader on your computer, download some POI files and see if you can install them to your Kenwood before trying the redilight or speed custom POIs. Extra help:

I haven't studied you two manuals too carefully, but in a quick glance, I'm not sure that a computer can connect to your unit with a USB cable. If it can, POI Loader may be able to directly install files to your unit. If not, you may need to have POI Loader create files on a SD card or USB memory stick and then have the files copied from the card or stick to the Kenwood.

put the sox.exe file in the same folder as POI Loader

I had a Kenwood unit in my last car and in order to get voice alerts you have to put the sox.exe file in the same folder as POI Loader is run from.

POI setup

Thanks for the links, they should help. I was able to transfer my favorites address book with a USB stick so I guess the same route would load the cameras. You brought up an interesting point if a computer can hook right to the unit. I'll have to try that even though it is not mentioned in the manuals. I was looking at a page with the camera files with a lot of links. Is there a file that includes all of these in one file?

Kenwood Excelon DNX9990HD

I was going to buy the above model but it is my understanding that this unit no longer has a USB service port. So if in fact that is the case, is it safe to assume that one cannot install POI's and SOX for example? How about obtaining logs off the unit?

Anyone out there have this unit to confirm if there is a way around this? Maybe an SD card for POI's but what about the rest of the picture?

Thanks.

I'm not sure what you see when you visit:

http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/us/red-light-cameras

since I have a windmill and you don't. But once you have active user status (or pay the early download fee), you'll see an orange-gold Download Button which will let you download two files, one for redlight cameras and the other for speed camera. My guess is that you don't have access to the Download Button yet.

dnx9990hd

According to Cruthfield the dnx9990 has a USB on rear. If it is like mine the dnx6990hd the USB is a cable from rear and I pulled it to the glove box. This is where I loaded my address book to the Garmin nav.

I too have the DNX6990HD.

I too have the DNX6990HD. How did you use the USB cable to load the custom POIs? Did you have to create different directories? Where did you set the proximity alerts? Any advice is appreciated.

Loading POIs

Ash I did use the USB to load them. All you have to do is use the POI loader to create files on a USB drive and add sox.exe for sounds. I left the proximity alerts set to default. When the unit is on any nav screen connect drive to USB and the unit will load everything automatically for you. So far it has worked great for me with no errors in data that I have found.

dboater, thanks for the

dboater, thanks for the info! I will give the USB a try. I've been trying to get it to read the SD card to no avail.

We're you able to get the

We're you able to get the red light camera data base loaded into your DNX6990HD?

I was looking for a high end

I was looking for a high end radar detector with GPS. My research led me to the Escort 9500ix as the best of the best. After finding this site I decided to buy the Escort 8500 x50. It basically the same radar detector without the GPS that keeps track of red light and speed camera locations. I'm still trying to understand how to load the files into my Kenwood DNX6900HD. I downloaded the POI loaded and moved the Sox.exe Giles into the same folder that poi loader is in. Next is the database file, I think.
What do I download next?

POI install

The data bases from this site do work for me. Thank You! These are the instructions from Garmin to install POI files to the DNX6990. To use custom POIs with a Kenwood device, you will need either an SD Card or a USB stick. Create the POI as outlined by GraigW in post 2,and add sox.exe to this.

Download, install, and run the free POI Loader program at www.garmin.com/poiloader
Select Garmin device
Select the SD card or USB stick from the drop-down list
The SD card will need to be inserted into a card reader or a built-in SD card slot
Click Next
Select Install new custom POI's onto your device
Click Next
Select the folder that contains the POI data using the Browse button
Name the folder POI
Confirm the units of measurement and whether you want to use Express or Manual mode
Click Next
The files will then be installed to the SD card or USB flash drive.

To install the custom POIs from the SD card or flash drive to your Kenwood device:

Ensure that the Kenwood device is on one of the navigation screens
Insert the SD card or USB stick into the Kenwood device
Touch Yes to confirm that you want to copy the POIs to the Kenwood device
Touch OK when notified that the installation is complete
The custom POIs will now be installed to the Kenwood device.
Hope that does it for you.

Cameras

If you figure out how to get voices to work please post. I have the same unit and cannot figure it out.
