I like using waze. While it doesn't consistently report cameras it does help navigate very well and stays up to date.

It would depend on how much you use it, but yes it can be a data hog as nothing is stored on your phone/tablet.

As a daily Waze user

I just checked. Over the last 8 days 11 hours, using it every mile I drive, I have used 1.6 GB. I'm on the road just about every day, weekends included.

Yes, that is GB, not MB.

For the record, my Words With Friends usage over the same time period is 3.5 GB.

Wade Has its Place

I am a Royal Wazer, meaning I am in the top 1% of Waze users in my state. Waze is very convenient, but it is still very buggy and has some limitations (eg. No exit services). My ideal solution would be my Garmin Nuvi that has the Waze real time information and real time interface where you can report traffic incidents. Maybe Garmin can buy Waze????

Google Owns Waze

Garmin wouldn't be able to afford Google's asking price.

Those calculations can't be right - perhaps that's a cumulative total or something is wrong with the phone. I have an iPhone and have been using Waze on this new phone for several weeks (approx. 1.5 hrs. per day) and it's only used 51 MB. I've looked other times as well and it's definitely nowhere near the GB range.

Experience in the Los Angeles area.

I use waze to supplement sigalert in the Los Angeles area. Driving in the most densely car populated city in the US, you would think waze makes perfect sense.

Not really. Waze information can be old or contradictory. Using the data to predict the best path to travel is iffy.

Caveat emptor, YMMV.

Update Available

iOS version was updated recently to 4.16.0.

Tesla Navigation = Google Maps + Waze

Went for a ride in a friend's Tesla yesterday and the console display now shows Waze-derived traffic information on the Google Map! Very helpful in dodging Tampa Bay's historic backups on I-4.

Tried it

Didn't care to much for it. Seems to me like it's Facebook for maps. rolleyes

WAZE

Tried it a few years back and the data base was not large enough of users. Used it recently and it was exceptionally better especially for cops and their location. Also use it for traffic congestion. Never chat or use it for GPS, just speed traps and traffic. Cops have got to hate this app.

After an unsuccessful attempt to have police activity removed from Waze, law enforcement adopted a "keep moving" strategy. Many LEO's monitor Waze and relocate as soon as their location is reported.

I use Waze regularly and here in my home state, I report 90% of the police reports as "not there". I find Waze reports to be more current in populous areas where roads are more heavily traveled by Waze users.

Waze and Nuvi

I used Waze a few times in addition to my Nuvi to compare routes and destination times. Generally, the routes were the same but when different, Waze had the better route. The one thing I find interesting is the destination times. Nuvi starts with a more optimistic time, while Waze begins with a later time, but during the trip, Nuvi will change the destination time which turns out to be the same as the initial Waze time.
Why does this happen. I have chosen Nuvi routes b/c of the shorter destination time only to see that it didn't matter.

For me, I notice that the Garmin is much more conservative in the ETA than Waze, (or Google, they use the same engine). I can almost always lower the Garmin ETA by consistent speeds and few stops. The Waze time almost always gets extended.

This is only MY experience.

I find almost just the opposite of what you have observed. In our small town, the police reports are very accurate. Waze is our go-to app whenever there is a traffic congestion to see if there is a wreck up ahead.

We also use its website

My wife will sometimes call me so I can "look ahead" of her drive on the way home. That way when she hits congestion, she can have an idea of how bad it is or if she should detour while not looking at her phone while driving.

I use

We also use it at work or coming to work to determine traffic conditions. We also know if co-workers are late for a traffic reason or not.

asking for access to contacts

A lot of apps ask for access to contacts when they don't need it. This bothers me also, but if I want the app, I have to consent. Apps should only ask for access to the minimal information they need to run the program. Why do they need my contact information?

If you need to access your contacts for any reason through the app it has to have access or your can not do what you need to do with the app.
Apps can not work as needed if they can't access items on your phone. Camera, etc. won't work on apps if you don't give access for the app to work.

Waze and Means

Wouldn't it be something if the cops use WAZE to enter erroneous info about tie-ups and police locations just to keep traffic moving at the posted speed limits? :-0

I have found WAZE to be a useful as your data connection and those able to report around you. The maps are the most up to date that you will find anywhere and will navigate you around bottlenecks and yes sometime takes you in a way you would not travel.. BUT Your able to keep moving and it doesn't add much time to your travel unless your in an area with very few highways. In short your not stuck in traffic and Your better aware of your roadway that you travel.

This is because Waze has a much better knowledge of traffic and how fast traffic is moving RIGHT NOW. Our Nuvi's will eventually notice that we are only travelling 30 MPH on a 50 MPH posted road and update the ETA on the fly. Waze already knows people are only moving 30 MPH so it's ETA is calculated using the lower speed right at the start of your route.

That is what I like about Waze. I want to know before I choose a route whether there will be any delays, not after I am on the route. I also like to know what is causing the delay in the first place.

Personal Informatin - NO thank you Waze !!!

I heard it on the news that google will be offering users 2B able input accidents and police to compete with WAZE.

I agree that the remark about Google competing with Waze is questionable.

However, there are a lot of people who are using Google maps but not Waze. It could be that Google is thinking of adding this capability as a public service - and also for PR purposes.

user input

User input is not that good or accurate thing. If you need most accurate info about traffic flow you have to agree to constantly collect data from device mounted in your and most cars on the road. This way you will have most accurate average speed and possible delay on precise part of traveled road. Reason for delay is not that important, as I often have seen heavy traffic, where after driving couple miles for 2 hours all the sudden traffic cleared without any indication what caused stoppage.

Waze

I have tried to have Waze but have had problems with it. When it works it is great, hovever, for some reason the sound on my phone doesnt work when I use Waze which defeats the purpose of using when driving. I have also tried to use when walking but if the connection is bad, it doesn't work. I think Google maps is better and faster for walking.

I agree

The sound is too low. I can't have my radio or CD player on at the same time.

Around the City

I use it around the city, I find it useful for pot hole locations and police radar traps. Long distance I still use my GPS.

On a 5 hour interstate trip this past week, about 90% of the "police reported ahead" warnings appeared to be false. Granted, some may have been errors, some may have been cops that moved before I got there, etc. But, I've been noticing more and more false police ahead reports lately.
