Newbie

OK, I'm interested in that Waze stuff. How do you use your phone? Do you have it sitting in a stand on your dash? Just wondering.

Yep

I do. But it's down lower from the GPS. I use the Waze for the traffic and police alerts.

Waze on dash

I have the phone in a mount next the to Garmin on the dash. The phone is plugged in while driving. I use bean bags to attach the mounts to for easy hiding when not in the car. I used to attach the GPS to the windshield, but it came off very often.

Both on the front of the dash

I have a space to mount both my Garmin and phone on the front of the dash in my truck (not where they block any of the windshield) - one above the other. Both my mounts are a short, foam mounted post with the same size ball on it so I can use either device on the top or bottom mount. I typically use Waze for the traffic updates on shorter trips or when going places I know pretty well. When I am going on longer or more complicated trips I use the Garmin for the navigation and Waze for the traffic updates. I use the voice activation to make my reports on Waze while I am driving so it isn't much of a distraction.

No waze for me

The last time I tried this program, it routed me 8 miles in the wrong direction. I know my way home but was testing it. It failed big time.

I agree, ....

it is very useful in heavy traffic.

I just downloaded waze again

I just downloaded waze again, and now I'm impressed! Don't know if Google improved it, but I would rate the UI better than my Garmin and better than Google nav as a PND! Killer search, finds phone contacts easily without the usual tap tap tap.Save to favs is easy and recalling them can be done from the map screen search.I bought Tomtom android and I'm sorry I did, waze is years ahead.

The only thing that it needs is to be able to DL map tiles like Google maps can.

seems to be improving

Waze seems useful for hazards, accidents finding gas etc; members sometimes could be more specific when reporting - that should improve as more wazers come on board and learn what works best.

Overall it seems to be improving

Wayze scares me. All I can think of is Wayze users all around me trying to click on that little icon to open the Report screen then choosing the correct button to press so you get the correct thing to report, all before you leave the area and all while trying to pay attention to what you should be paying attention to, driving. You can enable voice commands but that can be tricky to while driving.

map

from my perspective, the maps are better than any others. SR193 was extended and WAZE had it when it opened, a couple of residential roads were also there, they are now on the last Garmin map release.

I recently used Waze to find

I recently used Waze to find a funeral home in Queens, NY. I started to put the name into Waze and it popped up. It took me in the absolute opposite direction. I figured that it was my error due to an old database. I put in the exact address. It took me a few miles South when I should have gone north.

I was supposed to go to 90th street or something like that. It took me to 135th street somewhere else and said that I arrived.

Like I said in the past, Waze can be useful and I use it to supplement my standalone GPS. Sometimes the directions it gives is absolutely nonsensical or absolutely wrong. It rarely happens, but it isn't fun when it does.

First time using Waze on my HTC One Mini

Had used Waze before but this was the first time on the HTC One Mini. None of the actions to initiate the voice command seemed to work properly. The three finger tap didn't work at all, and one wave caused the voice prompt to come on randomly, while two waves and it wouldn't respond.
I hadn't taken the time to go through all the settings and there was information overload. At a pit stop, I went through the settings, and eliminated a lot of unnecessary stuff.
According to my phone's accounting, Waze used 12 MB of data during the 3.5 hours of driving.
I was getting so many warnings of vehicles on the shoulder, that obviously a lot of other Wazers were ahead of me. But on my return trip, without warning, Waze directed me off the Interstate to a country road, through a small town, and back on the Interstate. Just before exiting, Waze indicated red ahead on the Interstate and 5 mph. I guess it saved me from a backup. I'll never really know for sure. Didn't see any stopped cars ahead, but the Interstate was rather deserted for a Saturday afternoon where I got back on.

Good for POTHOLES

A friend called me today on her way to work, as we were talking she said traffic was barely moving and she was going to be late getting to work. I asked if she had WAZE and she said she had one of the 'old' phones. I turned WAZE on and I was able to find what was causing the backup and where exactly it was - a pothole repair crew working about 1/2 mile away. After crawling for another 1/2 mile she told me traffic started moving again - just as WAZE indicated. She and I were both impressed!

valid points

All valid points. Safety should be the primary concern always. Have also seen a reminder prompt where Waze states not to text while driving.

Also, Waze alerts may not be "real-time" by the time one checks it, as after 5 or 10 minutes the info may be no longer current.

Accuracy/helpfulness depends on how soon upon recognizing an event, and the waze reporter's proximity in relation to that event being reported (safety assumed, of course).

I've found Waze useful as a

I've found Waze useful as a supplement to my existing GPS. Absolutely I would never use it by itself.

Waze

My wife has that app on her iPhone and it is MUCH better than the traffic on my 3490.

Seems to be very detailed info and very up-to-date.

sometimes better than other sources

the traffic report and hazards are fairly accurate. I use it on occasion when driving to and from work. When I'm traveling on business trips to areas that I'm not accustomed to I use it 90% of the time with my gps.

I don't use the chats but I report traffic and hazards.

Awesome app. The best for

Awesome app. The best for traffic, way better than Garmin.

Use it more and more everyday

Use it more and more everyday. As a secondary for up-to-date traffic and speed traps.

Noticed quite a bit of improvements after Google bought it. I personally don't care for the navigation or search. Though it seems like it will only get better as Google integrates there map engine deeper into Waze.

I use this when on the express bus from manhattan NY

I travel to and from work on a Express bus and when the bus is going slow, I want to know why and how long it will take to get me home. Works great. There is even a Map Chat but I would not want to use it since the drivers SHOULD be driving and not using the Phones..

I google keeping WAZE

as a separate app? I read that Google was going to incorporate Waze as part of Google maps and drop the Waze app.

I used Waze as a back up

For short commute I used Waze and for trip I rather use the regular GPS

disable

If you wish, specific notifications can be disabled if they become bothersome. Such as hazards, police, construction, traffic, etc.

Just returning from my New Orleans trip, I received a ton of vehicle on the side of the road notifications. Quite annoying but helpful!

As far as accuracy, i still believe it's fairly accurate as the updates are reported and updated by your fellow Wazers. Simply confirming those hazards whether they're there would remove or keep them there for the next fellow wazers.

Finally, I rarely use Waze as my sole form of gps navigation.

I find that WAZE is just ,,,

A game or toy.. sure you get information but the folks on there are doing it for points for .. I dont know what you use points for.

I also found that since I started using it, my Data is being used. Not sure I like that. I also found that it does keep track where you are going to .. Just log in the Waze site, and you will see all the places you be and the route you took. I do like the send your location to someone. My wife is always asking where I am and how long will it take to get home, now I send her the link and she know JUST where I am and how long it will take me to get home.. Not sure that is always a good thing (lol)

Not sure if I will keep using it.

Me?

I've been using Garmin USA on my iPhone for sometime and recently revisited Waze. I've been using Waze now for several weeks closely monitoring my data use so I don't get any surprises when my bill comes. I do not notice any big spike in usage but I'm sure there's some. I'm really liking how Waze has changed for the better since I first looked at it several years ago.

Things I like.

Excellant red light camera notifications. Police & accident notifications too.

Voice commands. I wave my hand in front of the phone and Waze asks me what I want. I can tell it where I want to go or to report an event without being visually distracted.

If Waze routes me somewhere that i route to regularly and i don't like the route and i always go a different way, it learns my favorite way. Yea I know. If I know where I'm going why use navigation? Don't know why, I just do. smile

It does have chat capabilities with other Wazers so I guess you could use it for meet ups.

New to Waze

Very easy to setup and use.Don't forget to activate the sound feature to get the red light camera notifications. Not sure if you can specify what to give aural notifications or not but it is a little annoying getting all the bings and boings for items I'm not interested in.

I've also had the sound alerts cut out on their own with no explanation as to why. I checked the settings and the sounds were checked. A little disconcerting to be driving along and not get a notice of the red light camera. It did show on the screen though.

Agreed

When I had a Magellan that had trouble with POIs and addresses, I called Samsung asked the tech who provided their Navigation software/maps for the Galaxy, because I wanted to buy the GPS unit that used it. She stated that it was Google and it was not licensed anywhere else. Anyway, all this to say that maybe Google should get in the GPS arena.

Now a Garmin user and much more satisfied, but a Google device might be nice. I liked the storefront look, too.

If you're talking about spoken alerts, it indeed responds when you're moving. Would not be very good if it didn't.

Ok this is what I found on this. If I'm listening to my music via bluetooth on the car radio and the bluetooth box is checked WAZE doesn't interrupt the music and Doesn't sound the alert but gives a visual alert on the screen. If I check the phone speaker for audio alerts it does interrupt the music on the car radio and gives an audio and visual alert of the red light camera. This is on a iPhone by the way.

Waze

Sometimes I use both, waze for the police and delays.

Nuvi 765t traffic

I have been very disappointed with my Nuvi's traffic capabilities lately. Yesterday, it showed traffic and tried to re-route me out of my way and traffic was moving swiftly. Later in the day on another road, it showed green and I got stuck in traffic.

The problem with Waze is

The problem with Waze is that it requires a data connection, thus using your data, unless you have unlimited data plan, I would prefer using an application like Co-pilot, where the maps reside on your phone and no data connection is necessary.

Data usage

I've checked my data usage with Waze carefully after trips I take frequently. Two hours and about 112 miles (95% Interstate)and I use about 10 MB of data. Weigh that against the warnings of traffic issues ahead and the possibility to be re-routed in the case of a tie-up ahead on Waze.

Garmin traffic has always sucked
