Garmin maps update help

Hi there,

Please help! I have a Nuvi 2440 and every time I try to install map updates using Garmin Express I get a infuriating error message "There was an error installing the update" with no further information. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Garmin Express software and that's all fine - it's the map updates themselves which seem to get stuck. My MacBook is brand new with plenty of space so that isn't the problem.

Anyone got any ideas?

Many thanks.

Take simple steps first

Restart the computer.

Restart the nuvi - not just sleep - hold the power switch down, about 5 seconds, until a prompt appears, "Turn off device?" There are two buttons, Cancel and Off. Touch Off.

I received the same error message, "There was an error installing the update," when updating the software and map of my nuvi 3597 last week. Restarting the GPS and the computer solved the problem.

Make sure the nuvi is fully charged before starting the update process. Why? Because a computer USB port cannot supply enough current to both charge the nuvi battery and run the update process. Get a Garmin wall charger and charge the nuvi for 5 hours.

If the computer is a laptop or tablet, make sure the computer battery is fully charged or is operating from 120 volts (mains).

Make sure the computer has a reliable internet connection. WiFi should work, but it has caused a problem for other members sometimes.

If Garmin Express does not recognize the GPS, unplug the USB cord, delete that GPS in Garmin Express, restart the computer, and let Garmin Express re-detect it. This should install Garmin USB drivers.

Always use the Garmin USB cord directly connected to the computer. Do not use a USB hub or other device in-between.

After you succeed in updating the map, restart the GPS.

Map update.

First of all, let me say "Welcome" to POI Factory. There are lots of knowledgeable members here who will try to help you resolve your map update problem.

I assume you are trying to update to CN Europe 2017.20. Are you using a micro SD card in your nuvi 2440? If not, you will probably need one (8 GB or more) if you are trying to install the full Europe map.

Map update failure can have many different causes, but often it is related to the computer and/or internet connection. The map is a very large download and will take an hour or more (up to several hours) depending on your internet speed. So you need a stable internet connection.

Here are a few things you can try...
Make sure you have the most recent version (4.2.0.0) of Garmin Express. Turn off any power saving features on your Mac to make sure the USB ports and the computer itself doesn't go into sleep or hibernate mode. Try disabling your virus protection and firewall during the update process. Try different USB cables or a different USB port on your computer. Connect your computer to the internet with a hard wired Ethernet connection instead of wireless.

If all else fails, you could try the old GarminMapUpdater for Mac program instead of Garmin Express. Garmin Express should work and is the preferred method, but when it fails to work, MapUpdater is always an option that can be tried. If you really get desperate and if your Mac has a SD card reader, as a final resort, you could try the cloning method to install the map update directly to a SD card. The cloning method is documented here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39231.

SD card

Alandb is correct in recommending installing an SD card. Whether the map is Europe or North America, an SD card is likely needed. Garmin Express should be able to handle installing the map partly to the SD card.
