I hope you're not suggesting we go to file sharing sites.

I'll wait until I can get the file from Garmin's servers.

Interesting

I had the large JCV file for 2012.4 on the SD card in my 1490 in a JCV folder. The folder is now empty after the 2013.1 update. surprised

The 2012.4 jcv file won't work with the new 2013.10 map so apparently even when on a SD card, the map update process will remove it.

If you look on your 1490's internal storage, you should find the small non-photorealistic default jcv file intended for the 1490 series of nuvis with 2013.10.

If/when the large file for 2013.10 becomes available on Garmin's site, you'll hear about it here and then can download and install it to your SD card and remove the small file from the internal drive on your nuvi that appeared when you updated to 2013.10.

The hope is that the large file will become available in the next day or so.

I'm am pleasantly surprised about the large INCREASE in speed limit data for Canada in City Navigator NA 2013.10.

In my quick tests I'm seeing speed limits on the 401 Collectors all the way from Yorkville Mall (Dufferin Ave) to Pearson International. In the 2012.40 speed limits display was hit and miss, with them showing in some segments and not in others.

I wonder what the coverage is on the QEW south of the 405. When I drive up from the US, crossing at Niagara Falls, I have not seen speed limit information until I passed that intersection. Heading back home, the speed limit would go away south of that intersection. Only a few more months before I get to check it out again...

Easy

@Aardvark

Easy to find out today if you want. Just put your GPS in simulation mode. Enter Where To - Cities - Niagara Falls and pick Niagara Falls, NY - Set Location.

Now go to Where To - Cities and pick city in Ontario that you would normally drive to/by on the QEW. Then answer YES when asked if you want to simulate the route.

I see speed limits as soon as I exit the Niagara Falls, Ontario city streets and enter the QEW going north to St. Catharines. There are no speed limits for the "entry ramps" but once on the QEW the speed limits show up. and remain all the way to Exit 44, in St Catharines.

Tried another route from I-190 and then 405 to the QEW but got no speed limits on 405, Only I-190 in NY and the QEW in Ontario. But here is the weird part, I do see speed limits on 405 for the return trip from St Catharines to Lewiston, NY, but only for part of the way (not all the way to the border crossing).

I have 92.7Mb free space left....

Option 2 question

Option 2 is not finding my unit. Everything else, (communicator, webupdater etc) does. Even updater 3.0.11 I used to update my 2300 in march finds the units, just not 3.1.11. Is 3.1.11 the version everyone else is using?

I have the large file and it is the genuine article, however I will not be providing the links I downloaded the file from. That is Garmin's job to do, and unlike in times past when the link was fielded within a day, I chose not to wait for Garmin to post the link.

Seeing the high amount of attention to the 3d file, I'm curious, does the photo-realistic view really make a difference for you guys? I understand that it gives some proud of ownership, but from the few times I saw it on my 765t in action, IMHO, it was more distracting than helping anything.

I mean not the junction view, but images of the buildings in the background.

Some info in addition to what you found... In the Toronto/GTA region, there is speed limit data for the DVP, QEW, 404, 407, 409, 410. Elsewhere in Ontario, 402, 405, 416. Still no data for Allen Rd, 406...

Garmin is testing the waters. They are holding back on releasing the large JCV file to see how pissed thier customer base is going to get.

Hope you do the right thing Garmin.

They released a new version for option 2 download and it is now the GarminMapUpdater_v3.1.5.exe file that will download.

Downloading now as we speak. I guess today is the day I update the 855 and install the map to my laptop, then add the jcv to the 855.

Thanks--I've been checking many times a day, the last just 30 or so minutes ago and it wasn't there, so your news is about as "hot off the presses" as it can possibly be!

PS--the file name and download URL are exactly what t92... had predicted quite some time ago.

Try , try again

Yeh - I had tried the URL about 25 minutes ago and no file.
Downloading BIG file now so I can have full JCV on my 1490.

Went to retail store yesterday to get an 8GB SD card to replace my 4GB card. Had a sale on getting a 16GB card at the same price as the 8 GB card. The 16 Gb works fine in 1490.
Got maps, JCV file, Custom POI files and Routes on SD card. Seems to be working fine !

Now have backup SD card (4GB) with everything on it too !

Happy Camper

Can someone clarify what exactly this larger .jcv file will do for me? Also since I downloaded and installed the updates that were on the server yesterday (and I'm assuming the smaller .jcv file) how would I install the larger file over what is currently on my 2595?

The manually-downloaded large jcv file is most useful on the older nuvi models that offer JVs--like the 8x5 and 14xx series but receive only a sub-50MB file with fewer JVs and poorer quality JVs when performing a map update.

Your 2595 will auto-install the proper jcv file and nothing extra needs to be done. One exception to this is for folks who now have split-screen JVs who want full-screen JVs.

The

The larger JCV file will do nothing for you. It is basically used by people that get a very small file during the map update because of the limited capacity of the internal storage on older Nuvi's.

On your 2595 you have gotten the file with the most "pictures". Your Nuvi supports "split screen" views so the file you have will be smaller in size than the downloadable one, because the pictures are smaller (only use half the screen) but will have exactly the same number of pictures in it. The only thing the larger file will do for you is replace split screen views with full screen views and take up more space on your Nuvi's internal storage.

Crap...

I did the update yesterday and it automagically updated my firmware to 5.30 from 4.8. I had deliberately stuck with the old firmware because it worked. I had previously been badly burned by a horrible firmware update and had no desire at all to change. Crap. I hope this one doesn't screw up my unit.

Thanks to all for the quick reply. I see the split-screen view which is adequate for my needs, especially considering the relatively short period of time it is on the screen when approaching an exit.

If I were a split-screen nuvi owner, I think I'd prefer the split rather than going full screen.

You Could

@Preroll

Just copy the GUPDATE.GCD file from the .system folder on your Nuvi, to a safe location, BEFORE you begin the update. Let the map update proceed as normal.

Once the firmware and then map update completes, replace the new GUPDATE.GCD file that will on the Nuvi with the old one that you saved previously. That will install the old firmware version back on your GPS.
