City Navigator 2013.10 North America is now available for download from the Garmin website.

I used an earlier version of Option2 to start the download but it is also available via myDashboard

What happens if you load the JCV file on a Nuvi 255?

You will lose space--nothing else

Jose98 wrote:

JCV files only work on JV-enabled Garmin units and the 255 isn't one of them. So the result of loading a jcv file to a 255 is to gain nothing while filling otherwise usable space on the nuvi which at some future date may be needed for map updates or other use.

Great new feature

Great new feature. It might have been there before but I just noticed it.

I love that on my 3490 I see a LARGE plus(+) sign and it lets me manually enter the speed limit on roads that didn't have the speed limit prior to the map release.

This has been a feature on the 34xx series since it was released...it's nothing new.

I can't speak for the 25xx series but the 37xx series did NOT come with the ability to correct the speed limit on the unit and still does not, despite many firmware updates. Garmin does not usually add features to units that did not have the feature to begin with.

INteresting shortcut

I have a 2460 and I just DL'd the latest maps. I would like someone else to try this to see if it's just my unit.
Simulate (or just look at) a route from San Diego to Cancun, MX.
On my 2460, it calculated quite a while stopping at 70% for 5 or so minutes. then routed me east, (ok) then northeast (?) getting me to the vicinity of Charlotte, NC. before taking a straight line shot to Cancun right over the gulf. I didn't know these did flight planning, too! wink Didn't even say 'Catch flight for Cancun here'.
My 2460 includes lifetime updated to North America, which includes the US, Canada, and Mexico. (not that I'm planning on driving to Cancun, but I wanted to see how far it was.

fine on my 3490

On my 3490 it calculated just fine. The trip will take 49 hours and 45 minutes.

It works on my 3490

I tried changing the dashboard and it seems I could always change or correct the speed limit setting. On the default dashboard it shows a plus(+) sign but on the other dashboards I have to click on the speed limit sign in order to change it.
The speed limit changing and the ability to delete roads from my route is why I love my 3490.

Your problem is you have the Avoidance - Toll Roads turned on. If you go into Tools - Navigation - Automobile - nuRoute - Avoidances and clear the Toll Road avoidance the route will calculate in about a minute with the same results as posted by gadget_man (49 hours).

By the way it's 2846 miles from the center of San Diego to the center of Cancun, with the Nuvi set to Faster Time.

Works fine on my 1490 - 2934 miles in 45:17

No Mexico in my 2013.10, so it's using Mexican roads from the basemap.

Yep, that was it. I didn't check the route settings and I guess there are toll roads in the way. Works fine.

It

It looked like there must be a border toll at Negales AZ. I didn't take a detailed look at the route but did notice that it took be from San Diego to Tucson and then south on I-19 so Negales would be the obvious border crossing into Mexico.

The same weird routing happen if you have the Toll Roads avoidance set and try to get from Hamilton Ontario Canada to Niagara Falls or Buffalo, NY. Since all the border crossings in that area are toll bridges the Nuvi takes you to the far eastern end of Lake Ontario (and beyond) before it finds away into the US where you don't have to pay a toll. Turns a half hour trip into a many hour journey. laugh out loud

#$^@&^@&@%@!!!

I failed to pay attention when I did the map update - I was doing it at work and had a lot going on - and ended up with the firmware "upgrade". Crap.

I didn't mean to get 5.30 but it automagically updated when I got the new maps. It locked on me hard during a work trip on Tuesday. It locked and then turned the unit off. I turned it on and it turned off again. I repeated this crap for a while and then finally did a reset which made it work again. Of course I had to redo all of my settings and I lost the mileage figure I was tracking for the work trip...

Hopefully I can locate the instructions for reverting to a prior firmware version. I'm sure they must be in the forums. WHY can't they just leave people alone if they don't want the "improved" firmware???

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh............ :)

I found the post about editing the GarminDevice.xml file with the software version. I changed it to an old number and went to the Garmin site. They've pulled the new version and put 4.9 back up. I was able to install that since it thought it was newer than the one I had.

Of course when I rebooted the device it actually knew the version was older than what was installed but it asked if I wanted to install it anyway and I said YES.

I had to (again!) redo all of my settings but the unit now says it has version 4.90 installed. WAHOO!!!

Map on SD Card

I tough that if you install a map on the SD card then you must rename the map as gmapsupp.img ? The file name gmapprom.img is only for map installation on the unit and not on the SD card?

For the newer units, if you

For the newer units, if you make a directory on the card named "Map" you can load maps into that directory and name them whatever you want. Whether the maps in that directory can use one of the hard-coded names or not I don't know.

Older units are limited to gmapsupp.img and for some of those units, gmapsup1.img. These units do not recognize a "Map" directory.

Updating map

Just noticed that 2013.10 is out - thanks for the post! With lifetime updates, will be updating tonight. Nuvi 760 was not working - thought it was the battery, as the charge would no longer last long enough to even start up on battery alone. But after installing a new battery, it still didn't work! Would start and then freeze after 10 secs or so. Finally searched and saw that the problem was actually related to the latest firmware update to v5.3. As suggested, a hard reboot fixed the problem. In spite of prompt, did not loose favorites, just some of the settings, easily re-adjusted.

Do you mean the "new" 4.90 firmware--or the offered-in-the-past and now removed 5.10 or 5.30?

I assume you've deleted unneeded voices, etc. to make room for the map--or installed the map to a SD card.

nuvi 750 won't take US & Canada

I used to be able to fit "US & Canada" in my 750, but while trying to update just now, it said I couldn't. Don't care about Mexico or the various islands, but would really like to do more than "Canada and Border States" since I don't live in a border state and am traveling to Canada.

Is there stuff I can delete on the nuvi to make room? I don't have much of anything stored there. Voices, maybe?

Hadn't seen this before

Hadn't seen this before posting. What is the safest way to delete unneeded voices? Just go in through MS-Windows file manage and hack away?

What about Audible books - looks like I might be able to get some MB back there, too.

If I get an SD card, can I store the update there?

.

plaws wrote:

Yes, if you go to my.garmin.com myMaps and use Option 2 (Garmin Map Update application).

With an SD card in your nuvi, it will allow you to install U.S. and Canada to the SD card.

You should be able to make it fit. In my 750 I have all of North America 2013.10 (except for Mexico).
The gmapprom.img is 1,564,992 (about 1.56 gig) and I still have 195MB of free space.

I removed:
- all language files, voices but the one I use
- all help files except for english
- all text files except english
- all vehicles except one
- all JPG's except for a boot picture I use

Maps updated for my Garmin 350

Can't update 780 with 2013.10 - out of storage

Hey guys, looking for some help...

I've got an older 780 that I'm trying to update with 2013.10. The internal storage is full (10.7 MB free), so I put in an freshly formatted SD card (1 GB). When I run the updater, it gives me three options to proceed, one of which is insert an SD card. Unfortunately, this option is grayed out. It doesn't matter if I boot the 780 with the card installed or wait to insert the card as part of the update process. I thought the 1 GB card might not be sufficient, so I tired a 32gb card and had the same result.

What's the best path around this?

Thanks,
Andrew

.

A 1GB card is too small for the map, and I'm not sure if a32GB card is supported for the 7xx series.

Try a 4GB or 8GB SD card. My 760 works fine with an 8GB.

note from Garmin

A note I got in responce to an inquiry from Garmin today stated that the Nuvi's will take up to a 16 GB SD card !

I guess I'll go pick up a 4/8GB card from Amazon. I'm currently upgrading with "upper 49 states". That's probably just as good for me.

Thanks,

Re: Updating Map

No trouble with updating map to 2013.10 on my Nuvi 760, along with computer install for BaseCamp. Also picked up a recent voice update for Jill - supposedly improves pronunciation of street name abbreviations.

I've been playing with my 2460 since the new update and one thing that stands out, for me, is that the eco-routeHD now connects almost instantly and reliably every time. This is a big change from past experience, and a welcome one. Used to be like 'fifty first dates'; I'd have to re-connect it every time while my wife is saying 'can we drive now?'. Yay, no more.
I use this in my Motor Home for the instant mileage readout.

In my humble opinion...

I still like my 350! Not much in the way of extras, if compared to the newer Nuvi's, but it's a good one. As many of the others, I too am religated to just the map of the good 'ol US of A. I don't go to Canada...so why try to have it available????

New map has wrong unlock code - maybe

Well, Garmin finally got me.

Downloaded the new 2013.10 map and all went well - that is until my 660 rebooted. It started loading maps and then it beeped and message said "Can't unlock maps". It's worthless without a map.

Did another download. Same thing again. Tried a re-install. Again, same message.

Went to the Garmin site, got the unlock code and manually put it into the "gmapprom.unl" file. Still no luck.

On the Garmin site, I happened to notice that the unlock code for my 2013.10 map was 2 characters shorter than all the other codes for previous maps. I'm assuming that this is the problem.

Unfortunately, Garmin support is not going to be available until Tuesday. I sent them an email and I hope they rectify it quickly.

I had to go back to the last map, so it's not a "Brick", but it is time consuming doing all this.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I never receive notification from Garmin that an update is available ... even though I registered for receiving notification.

Garmin does not send "Everyone" an email "all at once".

If they did that they would wind up with an overloaded server.

I think that if you do not D/L a map, you will eventually get an email. I missed a map update once and Garmin sent me an email about 3-4 weeks later.

but for future reference, how do you install to a SD card?

updates

Seems to be an update available everytime I log-in....is Garmin really that active on updating firmware, or are there lots of bugs? And the system doesn't really confirm that the unit updated properly. Whatever, right? A GPS nowadays is a $130 unit, can't be perfect!

If the update is just the Traffic Update to v2.70 don't worry about it. It has been discussed in other posts here. It does update the GPS but fails to let the GPS SW know its updated so it always shows it when checking for updates.

In checking my data (myGarmin/ManageMaps), I see some odd things in my map names. I expect that JV is Junction View, but what about the P--and the JV(G) vs. JV(G&N) vs. Deluxe JV, etc? Anyone with thoughts? Here are some of the map names I see for my nuvi 855:

City Navigator North America NT 2012.10 - Map+P+JV(G&N), Apr 11

City Navigator North America NT 2012.20 - Map+P+JV(G), July 11

City Navigator North America NT 2013.10 - Map+P, Apr 12

Even though 2013.10 does not mention JV, I did receive the small default-sized JV file offered with 2013.10 for the 8x5 series (which was manually updated with the large JCV file). Could P be the built-in POI data?

Bet they will be swamped

Yeah, but at least it's functioning again with the 2012.40 map.

No trips planned in the near future. I use it daily for Traffic updates, but with no map to go by, the traffic won't work.

We'll see how long it takes to get the code fixed. After it being a 3 day weekend with lots of folks traveling, they will be swamped with calls and emails.
