"Option 2" Question

Hi, I'm getting ready to do a map update soon for the first time on my 2350LMT and have a question. I keep seeing that people are referring to using "Option 2" for the update. Could someone please explain what this "Option 2" is? I printed out the map installation instructions from Garmin, and there was no reference to either using an "Option 1" or "Option 2" in the instructions. What is the difference? Is one better than the other?

Since this is the first time I'm doing this, if anyone has any other advice or tips for doing the updates, I would appreciate them.

Thanks!

Not sure what your instructions say, but if you log onto www.mygarmin.com and click on the myMaps tab, you will see a listing of all Garmin units that you have registered. Since you have a 2350 LMT, you should be able to click on a download link/icon.

From there it gives you two options, Option 1 and Option 2.

"Download the Garmin Map Update application to guide you through this single update without installing permanent files on the computer you are using."

660 Updated

I sucessfully updated my nuvi 660 and BaseCamp on 2 PCs with this latest map update using option 2.

Even with the "unnecessary" files removed, I'm down to ~100MB of free space left. Pretty soon, I'll have to skip loading Mexico as I don't plan on driving there.

Map update

Thanks for the information! My map install went just fine (using option 2). Started it up and went to bed. The next morning everything was done. I just ordered a lifetime update from Amazon for my older 765T, so I will install that when it comes.

Thanks for the help!

They changed the Algorithms again

Well, the first test I did with the 1013.10 map was to see if my 660 wanted me to go around the block to get home. It didn't! Yeah! (0.6 miles longer around block)

BUT, on the way to work it now wants me to go the shorter distance, but it is a route that is much longer timewise (30 to 40 traffic lights vs. the interstate and 3 traffic lights). Yes, it is set to "Quickest" route and I did a master reset.

Everytime a new map comes out, they change the Algorithms and fix one thing and screw up another. Now, being in the software application part of our company - I see this all the time. The software is so complex and calls routines that are shared, it is easy to break another part of the program when you fix it.

I am not upset by this since I use it mainly for traffic alerts. But I hope it works OK on our next trip.

That is why we software engineers love something called regression testing. I wonder if Garmin has a CMM rating?

OMFG, I'm so pissed off right now!

Just had to DL Win 11 media player to get an update for Webupdater. Why? I use Nero, and don't want this crap on my boxen!

Fine. I grit my teeth, and do it. Update what I want, then, on to the Garmin site for the map update. Yea, I'm bored...

The site does some kind of SW update (WTF?), despite me already doing the updates as mentioned.

Garmin needs to get their crap straight, and in a hurry! I CHOOSE WHAT I INSTALL, NOT YOU! I choose what I need to allow for java, not you!

This may be the last Garmin I buy. I'm bloody livid, right now!

--

If

If your updating the 3790 then the SW update was probably 4.90. Garmin began updating firmware with the map update as of the last map update release, if I recall correctly.

If you don't want this to happen then always keep a copy of the gupdate.gcd file from the .system folder before you start the update and you can then always go back to the firmware version you had before.

I agree that Garmin should not be forcing firmware updates on people and I have no idea why they need Media Player

Not that I understand why Media Player is needed for WebUpdater either, but I did come across this from Garmin while searching for some other faqs:

It is probably for the newer nuvi devices that use MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) instead of direct mounting of the device as a drive volume.

Over time, I have come to the conclusion that for most parts of the US, updating once a year is sufficient. Especially since I dont have lifetime naps.

May vacation

I went on a May vacation so I did not update until I returned home.

The first time Lifetime updater came out it worked great for me. I used it for two updates then when the next update came out if wouldn't work. Tried the next update and it still didnt' work.

I now use the option to download from the Garmin site and everything goes great. Guess I will be updating again in August.

So far with the new update everything is going great.

large .jcv file for 2013.10 install

I have updated mt 1490lmt to the new 2013.10 map file. I am new to this group, I'm in IT so knowlegable on file systems, found the small .jcv file. Could not find on here on how to install the new larger jcv file. I did try renaming the old file to .BAK and renaming the new file to the old file name, didn't think it would work but worth A shot. Put everything back to stock again and found this site. I have read through here but not finding how to properly install the new larger file and where. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to The Factory!

So close...

You're correct that the original small jcv file needs to be made unavailable--you can either rename it or delete it.

The new file you downloaded (D3060060A.jcv) is then copied to the nuvi or to a SD card without changing its file name.

Note that the new map 2013.20 is due soon and it'll have a new jcv file that'll need to be downloaded and used. Be sure JCV files are installed to the proper directory to be used.

Here's the source for the jcv file for the current 2013.10 map:

http://download.garmin.com/support/2013_10/NA/JV/D3060060A.J...

This procedure is used for the older nuvis that get a default small jcv file. Note that many of the new GPS models already install the large proper file so no extra effort is needed. Also know that for nuvi models that use the full-screen Junction View display, you will use the JCV file whose size is in the mid-700MBs while nuvis that use a split-screen Junction View display use a big file size JCV file which I think is in the mid-400MB range. Both are the correct "large" jcv file.

[Edit] From muell9k's response, your 1490LMT probably should use the small "large" 460MB jcv file to maintain its split-screen display.

For starters you can only have ONE JCV file active for a specific map version, the .JCV file Must be the one that corresponds to the map version you have installed, otherwise it will not work. The JCV file Must be in the JCV folder.

You can have more than one JCV file in the folder but it must be for different maps. If you have the North America map and a Europe map you can have both JCV files active for the different maps.

You can put the JCV file on an SD card by creating a Garmin\JCV folder and your Nuvi will recognize it.
This is helpful if you intend to use the large JCV file (775MB) and are short on space on the unit.
Make sure to rename the JCV file on the Nuvi to something else or just copy it to your hard drive and save it if you want to put it back. Once backed up you can delete it off the Nuvi to free up space if you like since it will be using the larger JCV file from the SD card.

Please note that the 1490 by default uses the split screen smaller JCV file (460MB) whereas the larger full screen one is 775MB. They both oontain the same amount of junction views, difference in size is the graphics.

The smaller split screen has an advantage though, it will display the junction view prior to the junction and continue until you pass the exit.
The larger file will appear prior to but only remain for a short period then turn off.

The two files for the 2013.10 map are;
D3191050A for the smaller Split Screen (460MB)
D3060060A for the larger Full Screen (775MB)

I have used both and found the split screen more desirable.

I hope this answers your question.

Wow, now here's a suggestion from Garmin for yet another "large" jcv file for full-screen GPS nuvis, the D2335090A.JCV file (725756KB) rather than the D3060060A.JCV of 775333KB that most of us use.

I wonder what's lost with the slightly smaller D233....file. Could it be loss of photo-realistic images--or would it be fewer junctions--or just more compressed image files?

I know I could go to the effort of swapping files on my 855 but maybe someone knows the answer without more tinkering on my part. It's odd, the D233.... file search is pretty sparse on Google.

PS for ktj.... Note that the D233... file is almost certainly a full-screen file and not the best option for your split-screen 1490.

I don't

I don't recall the 1490 supporting split screen views at all, but I could be wrong.

Wouldn't worry to much about the difference between the 2 large JV files as a new one will be available with 2013.20 anyway and that should be out in the next couple of weeks.
