City Navigator 2013.10 North America has been released

City Navigator 2013.10 North America is now available for download from the Garmin website.

I used an earlier version of Option2 to start the download but it is also available via myDashboard

Didn't Know That

Just copy the GUPDATE.GCD file from the .system folder on your Nuvi, to a safe location, BEFORE you begin the update. Let the map update proceed as normal.

Once the firmware and then map update completes, replace the new GUPDATE.GCD file that will on the Nuvi with the old one that you saved previously. That will install the old firmware version back on your GPS.

First thing I didn't know was that when doing a map update it will update the firmware also if older version is installed. I thought only Webupdater did that.

Second thing I didn't know that a a backed up gupdate.gcd will revert to an earlier firmware.
Does that mean while booting, it checks the gupdate.gcd file and if it doesn't correspond with what's on the unit it will install the firmware that is in the .gcd file?

Never experienced a firmware update while doing a map update since I always keep my firmware current.
Fortunatley I never experienced any problems with newer firmware.

I got mine

Okay, I just spent the last hour or so downloading the LARGE JV file. As soon as I get the time I'll download the new maps.
I just couldn't bear the thought of downloading the new maps first and then not having the new JV file available. Maybe tonight after the missus and I get home from visiting her brother and his wife I'll do the rest.

3.1.5 vs 3.1.11

They released a new version for option 2 download and it is now the GarminMapUpdater_v3.1.5.exe file that will download.

I used it on mine and it worked fine.

Where did you get 3.1.5? All I get is 3.1.11.

Me too

Don't know what version I had before, but updated it a week ago and all is good. Don't use it near as much as I used to now that I have a smart phone, but GPS is still valuable to me.

Yep, I think it started with the 2012.40 map update but for sure the update process now forces a firmware update prior to the map update if your not at the current version.

Yep again, when you use Webupdater or myDashboard to update the Nuvi's firmware it places a new gupdate.gcd file on the Nuvi. If you had the previous gupdate.gcd file available (made a backup), all you'd need to do would be to overwrite the new file with the old one and reboot the Nuvi.

On start up the Nuvi would warn you that you are attempting to install firmware that is OLDER than what is already on the device and ask you confirm that that's really what you wanted to do. Say yes and the old firmware is install.

Another way to avoid the update

is to edit the GarminDevice.xml before installing the map update.

DorkusNimrod wrote:

Right-click on the file named GarminDevice.xml on the nuvi drive located in
x:/Garmin and select "Open With" and choose Notepad. Look for the following line
approx 6 lines down from the top:

< SoftwareVersion >320< /SoftwareVersion >

The current software version on the unit is listed here. The example above is 320 (version 3.20) and coincides with the actual version flashed to the unit. Change the 320 (or whatever other version number it is) to 420 or to whatever the current available Garmin version number is. Make no other changes.

*Note that I had to add spaces in the example line above so the forum would not interpret the line as valid html code. Don't add the spaces that I added above.

After doing so, save the file (file/save). Don't unplug or power off the unit...keep it connected to the PC. Run the registration process again which should now let you register the unit. After doing so, be sure and delete GUPDATE.GCD if it gets installed on the nuvi again somewhere in the process.

Don't worry if you somehow mess up on the file editing as this file is regenerated at every nuvi power cycle.

From here on afterwards, you will have to delete GUPDATE.GCD from the nuvi every time after running WebUpdater since each time you do, it will find the newest update and reinstall GUPDATE.GCD again since you will still have an older version on the unit.

If you haven't yet done so, you can now install the version of your choice from the Perry archive site at: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/agree.html

Editing the GarminDevice.xml file simply temporarily fools WebUpdater and/or the registration process into thinking that the most current software verison is already installed on the unit. After the nuvi is power cycled & GarminDevice.xml is regenerated, the software version listed in the file will again list the older version that is currently on the unit.

You will also again have to re-edit the GarminDevice.xml file just before before installing the map update to avoid the forced firmware update.

@ canuk

@canuk, you can certainly go through the steps that Serg has detailed. Seems a bit easier to copy a file however. grin

The link to the "perry" site is still valid but I'd point out that it is of minimal use any more as it hasn't been updated since Jan. 2010 and has no firmware available for any of the 4 digit Nuvi models( other than the 5000) and probably some of the newest 3 digit models.

I didn't want to snip or cut part of the post Serg did out of respect to him and also to let others know that the method isn't only useful for map updates but also when registering or using WebUpdater to update everything else on the unit except the firmware.

I personally find it easier and much quicker to edit the GarminDevice.xml then proceeding your way but the importance is that the result is the same smile

My method also doesn't need any gupdate.gcd file wink

Correct file size?

Hi everyone,

I just updated my 1450LMT directly to my SD card and found that the file size is smaller than what was reported in a earlier post. Are map file sizes different for each product?

Mexico missing?

I think I figured out why my update is smaller. I don't see any cities in Mexico. Is it possible Garmin is sending a reduced map due to internal memory limitations?

I used the XML trick to get the map installed on my 8GB SD card.

The 2013.10 and 2012.40 maps for my 1490 are the same sizes as yours. MapSource shows that neither map has Mexico included.

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=82601
According to the 1490LMT "In the Box" docs, it comes "Preloaded City Navigator® NT North America (U.S. and Canada)"

According to the nüMaps Lifetime™ footnote, "Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased"

Some newer models 2xxx, 3xxx have Mexico included.

@T923347 & canuck Re: GCD File

Thank you both for the information regarding how to revert to an earlier firmware. Since it's not possible to get from Garmin, and the Perry site doesn't provide firmware for newer units, this is a valuable safety net.

Going forward, in addition to keeping a current backup of my Nuvi, I will make a separate folder for the GCD files. I will make subfolders and name them with the firmwares version so I can distinguish what they are. By doing so there will be no apprehension about downloading new firmware that may cause problems since a firmware backup will be in place. Sometimes problems may not be realized until several firmware updates, this way it’s possible to go back before the problem occurred. Although updates are supposed to fix problems, we know this doesn’t always happen.

I can't stress enough how important it is to back your files up. I hope others read your posts which may someday prevent avoidable aggravation.

Why 3490 have smaller JCV file than 765?

I have another 765 and get the 757MB JCV.

Once again

Once again, they are the same file. The difference in size is because the file on the 765 is all FULL screen views while the file on the 3490 is all SPLIT screen views.

Split screen views are only about half the size as full screen views and therefore the file is a lot smaller. Both files have the same number of views.

Webupdater no joy, and other details

For my 855, WebUpdater pronounced my firmware up to date, but did not offer me a new map. The MyGarmin dashboard, in contrast, popped up an icon proclaiming the new map availability within seconds. As others, I used the version 2 option (i.e. a dedicated single-use update application small download, rather than downloading the lifetime updater I already have and don't want to rely on for this purpose).

All went well, with the download from Garmin phase proceeding at a rock-steady 1.1 Mbyte/sec as seen by the Windows 7 performance monitor. It think that is the rate to which Comcast throttles my long downloads, so probably Garmin could have gone faster. However the Garmin application reported a quite irregular readout of current download rate and expected time to complete (as on previous updates).

The new big JCV file mentioned above appears on a single trial to working correctly with my Nuvi 855.

WebUpdater does not check map status. MyGarmin->MyMaps will show status.

How often do map updates get released?

When have these updates been coming out?

I updated my new 3590LMT last week with 2012.40 and this week 2013.10 came out. Do they release 4 times a year or more often?

Up to four times a year.

Up to four times a year. 2012.40 was released back in February, which makes 2013.10 the second update of the year.

Can still fit on a 750?

CraigW wrote:

Thanks, t92... I updated my nuvi 750 via Option 2. I had already removed unneeded voices, etc. and was able to install all of North America.

It took roughly 1hr 45min to download, prepare and install to the nuvi and computer (which already had Basecamp installed). This timing is with a speedy cable internet and a slow USB 1.1 as seen on the older nuvi models.

The 750 has no JCV file.

I'm holding off on updating my 855 until I hear what size jcv file is supplied--and if small as expected--to find the Garmin link to download the large 750+MB jcv file offered for past updates for manual download and installation.*

In the meantime, I suppose I'll backup my 750 with its new 2013.10 to my computer...

Good luck to all...and please someone report the jcv size for the nuvi 8x5 line. Ditto for the first person to find a link to the 2013.10-compatible large jcv file manual download.

First update to go "bad".

This is the first map update I've done on my 265WT that has had issues.
1.) Downloaded Full North America (US, Canada, Mexico). After download was complete, was then informed that the file size was too large. Selected US and Canada (no Mexico), at which point several additional MB's were downloaded (!).
2.) During (after?) installation, got message stating that an error had occurred and that the maps should be reinstalled. Have not tried this yet.

Unit seems to be working OK.
Garmin lifetime map updater continues to notify me that a new map is available.
New map is not listed in MapSource.

Yeah, addresses are notoriously suspect. This has been discussed over the years in previous threads.

When I make custom POI's I use Google Earth to get the lat/long accuracy down to six decimal places.

Changes

I checked a few of the open issues I am aware of and none have been fixed yet. NAVTEQ has confirmed they are in the hopper but Garmin has not yet incorporated them. The biggest one is the new I-86 bypass in Parksville, NY. That is a major route change and my device currently shows me traveling in open space. Based upon the time frame it takes to get NAVTEQ updates incorporated, I do not expect to see it until the 2013.30 update, 2013.20 at the outside but that would be pushing it.
