iPhone Garmin Apps

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, so forgive my question, as I couldn't locate the answer. But if I purchase the $59.99 Garmin StreetPilot app from the iTunes app store, does anyone know whether I can only obtain full functionality on one phone or both my phones? I do not believe this version requires in-app purchases (where such purchases would only work on the phone on which they're bought), so it seems that the $59.99 version should be fully functional on all iPhones registered to the same account.

Many thanks.

If both phones are synced to the same AppleID and share the same purchased music, apps will behave the same...

iPhone GPS

Thanks. Does anyone have any thoughts as to which Garmin iPhone app to buy? The $59.99 Street Pilot is now getting great reviews, since Garmin revised the app. I'm really looking for a comprehensive app that doesn't require in-app purchases, so that I pay once and install the same, full version on my iPhones.

Thanks again.

For a Garmin iPhone app - Go Navigon. Puts a full map on your phone... and you can subscribe to quarterly maps if you want to...

garmin

I like Garmin N America (blue icon) maps are NT 2012.2 version
and are stored on the device

Using it on my iPhone(s) and 3g iPad(s)

Avoid the Garmin Street Pilot (green icon) - maps are not stored.

I'm using Garmin USA

It downloads full map to the iPhone. I've been comparing it to my nuvi 760. I'm especially impressed with the traffic on the iPhone which is available as an in-app purchase. Way more comprehensive. I think Garmin has done a good job with this app. Impressed so far.

questions

Does the app have turn by turn nav like the handheld units? Can you load poi's to it? Do you have to change the sleep settings for the phone so it doesn't turn off after a minute or so in order to keep the nav on? How well does the battery last while navigating? Hope all he questions doesn't bither you, just things I'D like to know before thinking about purchasing it.

Answers to questions

No problem at all with the questions. Everyone here is great. First you really need to run the gps program with the phone plugged in. It will kill the battery pretty quickly otherwise.

One of the things I like about it is that you can do a setting where it doesn't go to sleep when the program is open. It does turn by turn directions with voice, features junction view for major highway intersections. One other thing I really like about it is that it allows you to search for POIs within the app using google. You can then navigate directly to something found in the search results. Also lets you navigate to any place in your contacts.

How?

How do I subscribe to the quarterly maps?

I know I saw the ability to do that once or twice, but I can't find it now.

Garmin USA Question

This may be a silly question, but does the Garmin USA app (blue icon) include lifetime map updates, since the map is installed on the iPhone instead of receiving a streaming map such as on the Street Pilot? Thanks!

Map Updates

Great question. My understanding is that new maps are included each time Garmin chooses to update the app (last done in november 2011) and these are free as with most other apps available in iTunes. Don't know for sure though.

one more question

does navigation constantly use data? I am on a limited plan since I don't use much data, I figure if I was using this app much, you would need to have an unlimited plan.

Garmin USA is resident on phone

The Garmin USA on-board program is completely resident on the phone. This is different from the on-demand version.

Garmin's Answer

As to whether iPhone App users will continue to receive free map updates, here's Garmin's emailed answer back to me:

new map data is included with most app updates. As of right now Garmin
has not determined how many maps a customer will receive for free and if
there will be a lifetime map update subscription.

Garmin North America

I'm using both Navigon and Garmin North America on an iPhone 4S. Both have maps on board. Both are good, no complaints.

Garmin apps

It will work for both or more idevice as long you sync on the same itunes account.

I bought mine on Black Friday last year for 50% off: $29.99.

In the Latest Navigon App, The Shopping Cart/Extras icon allows you to select "Fresh Maps" - which is quarterly updates for what they've said "at least 3 years".

Long Range?

Is Garmin moving away from standalone GPS receivers, or is this just another product line which is not meant to eventually displace standalone units?

I don't think Garmin moving away from standalone but more and

more people using smart phone they want to get that money too.

Iphone Map

How is this different from the map that comes installed on the IPhone?
It has live traffic.

The native Maps app is GoogleMaps with no navigation... it's rumored that a more robust native Maps app is in the works - but there's plenty of options in the AppStore.

Retrieve Waypoints?

I've been using this app since the summer of 2012. I am looking for ways to retrieve the waypoints from my iPhone. With my old nuvi, it was easy, I could pull via USB. I dont see an easy/intuitive way to grab from my iPhone.

How about Europe

Going to Europe in a couple of months and was wondering how good the Navigon Europe app for my iphone would be? Would prefer not to have to carry my nuvi (and all its hardware) in addition to the iphone and its stuff. Would data roaming charges kill me? The app is the same price as the nuvi map DVD/SD/download (or not far off). Also noted that the nuvi version is almost a year old.

Thanks

There would be the likelihood of data roaming fees for using your iPhone in Europe for navigation if you use the add-on traffic, or other add-on services. The basic navigation should not use any data for anything.

Navigon

So, if I have this right Navigon works is an off line app and if I do not use traffic the maps would be available even if I have the phone in airplane mode. Can't see how that would work, but I'm pretty dumb on some of this stuff!

Airplane mode will turn off the cellphone radio - in which is contained the GPSr circuitry... I've tested this... with airplane mode ON, you can not get GPS position data into apps unless you're using another means - like turning wifi back ON after airplane mode, and the phone uses the wifi node's geocoded location... or a 3rd party GPSr via bluetooth or direct connection feeds position to your iDevice.

So I would have to buy a 3rd party GPSr or other device to connect to the iphone? Sounds like the nuvi would be an easier and cheaper way to go. Right?

If you're going to Europe, and not wanting to have your iPhone working on anything other than wifi, a map of Europe on SD card is probably the way to go.
