Extra POI editor

1. How do I upload POI's to the program? 2. How do I download them to my tomtom. I know how to download files from here (this site)to my tomtom, but not from POI extra editor.

Not quite sure what you are asking, since I have a Garmin Nuvi.

You titled your post Extra POI Editor (EPE), so this seems to be your interest.

EPE is software written by one of out members, TurboCC. It is used to convert POI files from one format to another. It can read and write .csv, .gpx, .ov2, .mgln, .kml, etc....

have you read this FAQ?

Have you posted these questions in the TomTom discussion forum?

Welcome and good luck.

I open up the program and saw 4 GPS looking screens. I clicked on ADD NEW POI. What do I do after that? How do I fill in the boxes? I didn't post this on tomtom forum, I thouhgt I would get more people on here that knew how to use it.

EPE : Use to edit or create a POI file

As jgermann said you can use EPE to convert files from one format to another, or your can create a new or edit an existing file.

Assuming you are trying to create a new POI file from scratch, at the place where you clicked on Add New POI, you would enter at least the longitude, latitude and a name. Then click OK and that record will be stored. Once you have added several or all of the records you want, click on File and Save As and give your file a name and select the format you want, assuming OV2 for Tom Tom. You would then use whatever method you are familiar with to copy this file from your PC to your Tom Tom.

If you don't know the Lat and Lon, simply enter a Name and Address in the appropriate fields within EPE and then click on the Geocoding button near the center of the panel. It will do it's best to find the location on a map. Drag the pointer to a better spot if desired and click on the Grab button at the top and it will fill in the Lat and Lon fields for you.

@navycop

as TXRVer has described, EPE can easily create files for you. I use it all the time to create test files to determine how or why something works.

It does have a good help section which you might read if you are wanting to enter addresses and then have EPE geocode for you.

If there are more specific questions, let us know. The easiest way to get answers is to state what your end-goal is for creating files rather than converting them.

Using EPE

If you want to use EPE to create a new POI list by ADDing a new location, you need to know:
1. POI Name
2. Street Address
3. City
4. State
Once you have these items you can click on GEOCODE and it will send the address to Google and return the coordinates for all or part of the information. You then tell it to GRAB and it will copy the coordinates to the entry. You can now save the entry by going to any other screen. If you want additional information such as zip codes, phone numbers, notes or other items you can enter them in the boxes before you do the save. (Clicking on the NEXT, PREVIOUS or OK buttons will also do a save of all the data in the boxes. If it doesn't show in the boxes, it won't be saved.

Be careful with older versions....

Only an OK will save with this version. PREVIOUS or NEXT will not save the information... This is the behavior with version 4.70. When just making a change to an already existing entry, any of those choices will do.

Hi camerabob,

You are right! There is a bug when using the "Add New POI" button. The Prev/Next button are not saving the new POI. It works only for existing POI as you reported.

I'll fix this.

Had thought this was a known issue.

Glad to be of service. wink By the way, it's still a kick-donkey piece of software. Keep up the good work.

Nope! I didn't know about it. I fixed it for next release.

Since you are adding a new POI, it will be added at the end of the list. You will be able to press the Prev button to return to another existing POI (while saving the new one), but you will not be allowed to click the Next button as you are already at the end of the list. I hope this makes sense.

AMEN

I will add, just think how much better the world would be if all programmers were as honest and responsive as TurboCC is.

I second that!

Thank you!

Thank you all. I am glad you like it.

BTW, I am leaving bugs in EPE just to keep the thread going... LOL! So much for the honesty... LOL! Seriously, this was an easy bug to fix. I prefer to get rid of it asap. That way, a new user would not think I am a total failure... smile

Check for v5.32. I should post it within the next few days. You will also be able to open BaseCamp from within EPE.

A Third Thank You!

Turbo, you're also a mind reader!
I was going to ask for BaseCamp launching grin

Trying to upload

I was trying to put the files I uploaded from here on the EPE. For instance: redbox, reststops, and a few others. I couldn't understand how to input them. I guess I have to us my own POI's (new poi's that aren't on here)manuel with street address or LON/LAT? I use myPoiManager to convert the files.

Load POI in EPE

Hi navycop,

To open POI files in EPE, just click File-Open and select your POI file saved on your computer. You may also to specify one of the many file types (GPX, OV2, CSV, MGLN, ...).
