Sound and Icons on Red Light Cameras

I followed directions and changed the voice and Icon file ending as intructions but still cannot get them to load on my Garmin 2595. Put them in the same folder as the POI Red Light file then used POI loader to load it. Any suggestions. Below are the names I used for the files. Thanks for any help.

What is the name of the .csv file?

Make sure you have correct PC settings by doing

2595 doesn't have a mp3 player

Instructions for using the .wav files for sound instead of .mp3 are here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

using an MP3 file. Your unit only handles WAV sound files. Talk to Speed2 about the program you need. He doesn't want me mentioning it any more.

I'd just use wav files instead of complicating things.

Use .wav sound files

Your nuvi doesn't use .mp3s, so use .wav files. It is just as easy. See this FAQ just like selfruler said -

Thanks for bringing it up. I was wondering that myself.

When?

When, oh when, will Garmin allow separate settings for RLC/Speed Camera audible alerts and turn-by-turn directions? I would love to be able to mute the turn-by-turn yet still hear the RLC/Speed POI warnings. C'mon Garmin!

Tried converting to .wav

Tried converting to .wav still no luck. Oh well just will have to go with the little beep warning before approaching a rlc. Thanks for the help..

Please tell us more

Did you download sox.exe and put it in the same folder as POI Loader.exe? Did you name the .wav file exactly the same as the RLC file? It is possible, with a little more discussion, to get the audio alerts to work exactly like you want them.

I agree

For some reason, I thought my 760 did that, but when I went to adjust the volume recently, I discovered I was wrong. I'd love to have separate level controls for alerts - I don't always need direction volume turned up (or on, as you said) but want alerts to come through loud and clear!

The most common reason alert sounds won't play is a double extension on the file name. Windows by default hides most common extensions, WAV being one of them. Unless you have told windows to display all extensions you probably have a file name with two .wav extensions. Another point is many units have to have alerts turned on in their settings otherwise all you would receive are the dings and bongs.

I thought of that, too, but...

I was going to mention this but then stopped. If double extensions were the issue, then I figured the .csv would be a .csv.csv or some such thing and therefore not work. But it appears the pois did load so to me, double extensions are less likely for a wav failure if csv files do load.

I'm now thinking less likely events--either sox.exe isn't in the same directory as poiloader.exe (or the wrong sox is being tried) or the wav file is in some format that sox/poiloader can't handle.

To the original poster--could you once again confirm that sox.exe (version 14.0.1) resides in the same computer directory as your poiloader.exe file (not in the directory with your POI and wav files)? We are assuming that you're using a PC--if using a Mac, I don't think sox.exe is needed.

Also, confirm that your csv POI file and wav file are identical before the period and extension. Note that Red Light.wav is different from Red light.wav and different from Red_Light.wav, etc.

A final test would be to try some other wav file. Sadly, the POI Factory has no wav files that I can find in the Sounds area so I can't easily direct you to a wav file known to work with sox and POI Loader.

I'm not familiar with the nuvi 2595. Is there any chance that Red Light camera alerts are built into the 2595 and that's the alert being heard? If so, then Boxcar's double extension issue becomes more likely again. To the OP again--when running POI Loader, do you get a "Successfully loaded xxx POIs" report when done?

I use this

I found a gong sound that is very loud. Then I can lower the volume of my 1490 and still hear the RLC alert.
Edit: This is the actual sound.

Double extensions for CSV files appears to be less of a problem than for icon and sound files. As an example I cite the most requested file on this site Rest Areas. Mr. Ken has been including a version in the file name for at least the past 40 versions (assuming AO is the 41st version) and it's read by POI Loader. The fly in the ointment is how SOX reacts when it sees a double extension. You have to remember SOX is called from within POI Loader where it takes the sound files and converts them to a format used within the GPI file. It may be SOX that can't handle the double extension or when the file name is parsed and passed to SOX the double extension causes a problem.

Now, a lot of this is guesswork on my part because I convert the rest areas to a GPX adding my proximity alert distance and save them with just the name Rest Areas.GPX so the file name matches my icon and sound file. (And yes, I use SOX as all my sound files are WAV even though my unit will handle MP3 sounds.)

Below are the files I just tried. I put .csv in the two new ones before the extension to see if that will work and it still does not work. Just get the audible beep from the GPS.
Redlight-Cameras.csv
Redlight-Cameras.csv.bmp
Redlight-Cameras.csv.wav

.

Remove the ".csv" from the bmp, and wav files.

Bummer, let's hope I see it's been solved when I return from jury duty this weekend.

If you're willing to put up with all our suggestions, someone here will find the solution for you eventually. It really is worth the effort.

wav file is mono

not sure how you converted your mp3 to wav file. I did mine by setting wav to mono mode instead of stereo mode. With sox.exe to load, it works very well.

If you're using a Windows PC, have we determined that you've unchecked "Hide extensions for known file types" in Control Panel / Folder Options / View on your computer?

You could also try one of Spokybob's known-now-to-work wav files from his link above in case the wav file you've tried is the problem.

It is unchecked

Got the Sound now!

Thanks to everyone I have the sound now. Saved the mp3 file to a mono wav file in GoldWave and it works fine now. Any trick to getting the icon to show up? Thanks again!!

Delete and reinstall POI's through USB

I was having a problem with my 2595lmt. I was trying to add the sounds also. I changed the files and tried to reload, it was supposed to delete the old one and install the new one but it wasn't doing that. Then all of the sudden it quit seeing the card. I deleted the files but it still wouldn't see the card and the poi's were still in it even though it said there was no custom poi files. I hooked it up to the computer with usb and ran poiloader and it asks if you want to delete custom poi's. I deleted them and then used the card again and it worked and loaded the new poi. Everythings fine now again. In the future I will always connect to computer and delete files before updating custom POI's. Hope this can help you. All this also affected the POI icons. Something you might try.

What version of poi loader?

Version 2.7.0 has a problem with cards and writing the correct extension of the file. It names the file .poi and then this creates another problem with deleting what is on the card.

The icon is there. You just have to zoom in more. The latest nuvis have hi-res screens and the icon is limited in size to 24 x 24 pixel. There is no work-around for this. We hope Garmin will allow bigger icons in the future.

Probably misunderstanding what you are saying. Are you saying that one cannot add a sound file to some custom POI on your unit?

Just a suggestion

if the answer for these question supported with photos it will be great and easy for 2595

double extensions

I'd like to point out that "Test File.csv" is NOT the same file name as "Test File.csv.csv" So you won't be able to ensure that your files names match unless you enable windows to display known file extensions.

This is great.
