INternal memory upgrade

Has anybody here opened a Zumo 550?
If so is it possible to upgrade the internal memory?

No.

If you need more storage space, then you will need to use a memory card.

If I remember correctly they

If I remember correctly they recommend nothing larger than a 2GB SD card, although I have used a 4GB in mine before.

Zumo 550 SD Card

I have used up to 16 GB card in a Zumo with no problems, however, the unit will not index more than 1000 MP3 songs, and it indexes faster if you divide that into many folders by artist. Anyway, the unit clearly can handle more than 2 or 4 GB.

nice to know ...

I only use the extra space to download the maps that no longer fully fit on the unit, no need for 16GB, yet, but nice to know.

SD Card Size

What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?
https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

These maximum sizes have been revised. For example the data listed as of 06/12/2012 said that a Nuvi would support 16gb SD cards.

This thread is about a Zumo 550, not Nuvi **

**(Zumo is a weatherproof motorcycle GPS)

From the list you linked :

zumo 400 & 500 series ... 4GB,

also that list actually tells you on some models a larger card won't hurt the unit, but may not work, unfortunately the Zumo is not among them. I've used a 4GB in my Zumo with no problem and GPS_Rider has used a 16GB, it's just not recommended.

I don't use the GPS for anything other than a GPS so I don't need the larger cards.

I do know that some older devices, like the Zumo 550, were made before HCSD cards (high capacity) came out and that's why they may not be completely compatible, they are not programmed to recognize the larger cards, which may be the reason GPS_Rider said his will not index more than 1000 files.

There's no limit to the size SD card that the Zumo can use.

There are limits, however, to the size maps that it may recognize.

And (at least for the Zumo 400 and 500 series) there is a limit to the number of MP3 songs that it will recognize.

Isn't that what I said?

No. That isn't what you said. At all.

You said that "they may not be completely compatible, they are not programmed to recognize the larger cards".

There's NO limit currently.

Interesting

I currently use a 32 gig MicroSD card in a SD adapter and my 750 is happy. I have mp3 and POI files on the card as well as the map a second map on the 750 and both work well. The card is formatted as FAT-32 and has 2.11 gig used. It appears that the next map update will be more than will fit on the unit hence the larger card. I read several years ago, I think it was on Garmin's web site, that there wasn't any limit to the size card the 750 could handle.

I don't don't know, maybe it's the fever I'm suffering at the moment, or the huge storm about to hit my area, but when GPS_Rider said it wouldn't index over 1000 files it's sounded like a limit to me. What good is the excess size if it won't properly index the entire card?

And we're talking specifically about the Zumo 550, the newer one may be just fine.

On the Zumo 550, the excess size is of no real use for most people.

But there's still no limit as to the size of the card.

You could put 16 GB of pictures on the card if you wanted.

The Zumo 550's firmware won't recognize more than 1000 MP3 files. That's the limit.

But if you were to combine 100 songs into a single file, then you could put more "songs" onto the card. There's no SIZE limit to the MP3 data.

Totally Agreed with limited

Totally Agreed with limited mp3 data. But you can use it more Gb
