BaseCamp Help and Information

I have asked questions for help on BaseCamp but they are in other post for BaseCamp and not always seen.

I am making this post as a place for help and information about BaseCamp.

I don't want to learn it but if Garmin stops supporting Mapsourse and uses BaseCamp it must be a better product.

If you have any questions or have any tips for BaseCamp please post them here.

Thanks Mary

Just say no to BaseCamp

I updated my BaseCamp and tried it again. It is still too tough for me to use. My simple needs are met easily using MapSource.

I find it's easy to create a route using BaseCamp, It's all the cleanup afterwards that's the real issue. It dumps everything into Favorites on my 885 and the only way to clean it out is to manually go through deleting the added points.

Learn to Use BaseCamp

It has so good features.

One that I like is that I can access the contents, POI, routes, tracks, that are on the device directly through BaseCamp. That makes managing the device so much easier.

BaseCamp is not perfect, but it has advantages. Better to start learning it now.

also, it works fine for me a lot friendlire to use.

OSM and BaseCamp

I have both BaseCamp and MapSource installed, and when I go through my standard OSM install procedure, the installed OSM maps are viewable in both. I'm using the same procedure I used when I had only MapSource installed on my machines.

Your mileage may vary.

Have had no success Uninstalling Basecamp!

I tried to uninstall Basecamp, but was stopped in the process by: "Please point at the file bcmain.msi (installer) necessary for the uninstall process" or something like that.

The same message came up when I tried to update basecamp.

I got the advise from the local Garmin importer, reinstall Basecamp. Not possible, because the same request came up few minutes into the install process.

I have searched my HD in open and hidden folder/files. No luck. But in the search I found the file, but it was apparently placed somewhere outside my PC I was told.

Basecamp was downloaded from Garmin, I don't remember if I only chosed "run" instead of download the exe file.

How do I remove Basecamp?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not in love with Basecamp

I put the center of the map on the address, trying different house numbers and no numbers, BC can't find the address, There are other addresses it will find and there are others that it wont find.

It wont connect with the etrex H. I haven't tried the nüvi® 255 yet.

Now Mapsource wont connect with the etrex 10 or nüvi 2455LMT.

My pet hate is having to have more than one program which are almost the same on my computer. I need one mapping program to work with all my GPS's

I wish Garmin would get their act together. It seems that they are no longer supporting the older GPS's.

Searching Using BaseCamp

I did a tutorial on BaseCamp searches on Noeman.org. The site admin was having an issue with conducting searches just like you are, and I helped her out. Perhaps it would work for you.

Problem not solved!

I am sorry to come back to the forum without having been able to remove BaseCamp, despite all the good advises!

I have consulted almost all software available, inclusive Microsofts help on the web, but I am running into the same problem: In order to remove BaseCamp, the windows installer is needed (bcmain.msi).

I am ready to listen to all advises editing the registry, removing files and folders belonging to BaseCamp to get rid of the program.

I have an image of the HD and should be able to recover the HD if necessary (do I sound desperate? I am!).

To summarise: I can't reinstal/remove or update Basecamp as it is right now.

@ geske

If you go into your add/delete programs and delete Garmin City Navigator update basecamp will disappear along with the maps on your computer.

Providing your able to redownload those same maps, do the following in this order.

1- Delete Gamin City Navigator
2- Download basecamp
3- Redownload Garmin City Navigator to your computer.
4- You will then beable to delete the basecamp program.

Cheers smile

A good read, it has some points which I didn't know, the problem seems to be the search engine can't see the street name. I've tried putting in the city, our cities aren't that big, the suburb, I've shifted the red cross right over the address, still wont find it, there are streets which it will find OK, maybe it's the map, we have just changed to navteq maps, it may come right after the next update.

A good tutorial, well done it has quite a few points I didn't understand, bookmarked it for further reference, thanks

--
Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present...

Try This.

I don't have New Zealand or Australia maps so I can't test this myself, but I don't believe you're searching properly. The fact you're seeing the red cross at all means you're either using Center of Map or Center of Selection, which will not help you find streets. As the tutorial points out, for best results in searching for an address, make sure to use the city name in the near field and the name of the street in the containing field.

2013.20 claims detailed coverage, which reinforces my belief that the search isn't set properly. Try this search and let me know what you get.

Find address near Whangaparaoa, NZ containing main

I'll reinstall it, that may work.

I entered as follows - address - Ashburton, South Island, NZ -
306 havelock street or
306 havelock st or just
havelock with the above variations.
The search results were stack st 253km away, stonylea rd 24.9 km away in fact it came up with 12 results all starting with S, the same happens with many other addresses, and yep the red cross is still there.
Reinstalled mapsource and that works as it should.

Reinstalled it

Same problem, it'll come right, it used to work with the old maps but now I have navteq maps it wont, has to be the maps, mapsource works OK. In truth, both programs are good, it's only the address bit that's a problem, as I have lots address's to find. After reading your tutorial I see some of the problems have been me.

Custom POI Icons

The first time I used Basecamp with my Garmin connected, it loaded my custom poi and their custom icons just fine. After that first time, however, the custom icons have disappeared - even though the names and locations of my custom poi are loading normally. Does anyone know of a fix for this problem?

This bug was reported by our member WAASUP over in the Garmin software forums here: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?33898-BaseCamp-4-1-....

Quote:

Custom POI icons are only displayed correctly the first time the Custom POIs are loaded. Every time BaseCamp is launched after that, the icons are incorrect.

A bypass for the problem is to delete the contents of the C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Garmin\BaseCamp\Devi ceGpiFiles folder.

The GPX folder you have on your GPS, where is it? Is it under the POI folder? I'm not real familiar with the file structure on the newer units, but for your 750 Base Camp would put the file it writes into the GPX folder, the same one holding Current.GPX.

I have always worked on my files on my computer so I would have them saved. I worked in the past with Mapsource then uploaded them with POI Loader.
BaseCamp is different. I keep my files on my computer in My Documents, My Garmin, POI, on my computer but when I put these files in BaseCamp it stores them somewhere else and does not link to my file structure, thus not updating my original files.

I have uploaded two routes from BaseCamp to my GPS and they go in Trip Planner fine. But I like to see my files on my computer so I can keep a copy on my external drive in the correct format. I see there is a backup of the files on BaseCamp but it backs them up in backup format and not GPX.

Just can't find the GPX file on my computer that BaseCamp makes. BaseCamp has, Library, My Collection, and then the file structure I set up in BaseCamp but I can't find this on my computer.

Thanks for your help.

Basecamp stores data

Basecamp stores data (Windows 7) here: \local disk (C),\\users\'your login pc name folder'\appdata\roaming\garmin\basecamp\database\"release #"\AllData.gdb

AllData.gdb is the 'garmin gps database' file and clicking it will only open Basecamp.

I use Basecamp almost all the time now. I also keep files on the hard drive on my PC in addition to the Basecamp database. I just use the Basecamp import/export command to move routes, waypoints, etc back and forth between Basecamp and my hard drive.

The Basecamp backup feature will let you store the backup files wherever you want but you're not going to be able to see what's in the backup unless you restore to Basecamp (be careful there that you don't wipe out something).

This link might help explain some of Basecamp's file structure: http://garminbasecamp.wikispaces.com/Data+Management

This file was on two post and it has been moved to Basecamp Help.

The information above about saving files from "Ed Y" is great.

I watched all of Garmin's videos about BaseCamp and asked questions on Poi Factory and I now love BaseCamp.

That is a strong statement but it is a lot better and easier to use now than when I tried it before.

.gpx to .trp.

I want to put routes from BaseCamp into Copilot Live on my Nexus 7

I can change my .gpx file to .csv and put the POI file in Copilot but I now need to change the .gpx file for routes to .trp.

I looked and Extra poi Editor does not save to .trp.

Does anyone know how to save .gpx to .trp

Thanks

BaseCamp TripPlanner

Now that BaseCamp has TripPlanner from the last update has anyone found instructions to use it? I have searched and the instructions all still tell how to use routes.

No Instructions, but

I have managed to construct a 5 day trip with hotels and stop-overs etc. I found it generally easy to use. I stumbled on a couple of days but found it easy to correct. I have printed out daily itineraries to share with others in our group.

So I think it can be done. Now if the others had Garmins too, that might be fun.

It is easier than I thought and I looked at the print function. So much better than Mapsource.

I use Dropbox so when I did the preview for print I just used the snipit tool and sent it to Dropbox. Now I will have a copy of my itinerary on my tablet and I don't have a lot of paper. Thanks for that tip.

BaseCamp Popup Balloon

I am running Basecamp v4.2.1 and would like to turn off the popup balloon that displays every time I stop the cursor on the map. Anyone have a clue? I've been looking for a while but haven't found it yet.

Help says to click "Edit > Properties". But I think they are just trying to be funny and frustrate me some more because v4.2.1 has no "Properties" listed under "Edit".

Basecamp is still the most tedious and unfriendly program ever written. Whenever I try to use it I always find myself spending all my time trying to configure it rather than getting anything done. It will playback a trip log, I'll give it that.

There are options under edit but I couldn't find anything to stop the popup. Had not even noticed it till you mentioned. It is a neat search option.

I keep all my files on my pc. So I just made the same folders in BaseCamp then import my files into the same folder, and when finished I export them back to the same folder to save a copy of them. This has helped me.

Edit:: Just tried the popup you are talking about to search for a McDonalds I couldn't find in Horse Cave. When I clicked on the McDonalds a window opened for Yelp Results. It must be something to do with Yelp and the internet. Maybe this will help.

Route made from BaseCamp goes Off Road

I made a route for my trip we just took on BaseCamp.
I sent it to Jill and when we started our trip some of the places she took us said Off Road and were through people's yards and fields but they did end up where I wanted to go.

Boy, at the time I hated BaseCamp.... I was able to look ahead and see where I was suppose to go so we got there without any problems..

When we arrived home I deleted all routes and remade the trip route. I uploaded it to Jill using BaseCamp. Same thing...off road places.
I uploaded it to Jill using Garmin's POI Loader and still off road places.

I have flags in my route so Jill will take me the way I want to go. We like the back roads. I tried every thing I could then did the optimize trip in trip planning on Jill. She recalculated the route. She used my flags and took me the correct way and after I did the optimize step all routes were on the road and not off road. So after I upload the route I optimize it in trip planner and all looks good. I did a simulation of parts of the route where she was off road and all was well.

I remember somewhere in a post someone had the same problem and I hope this helps.

Just and FYI ..., a few weekends ago I set up a couple of routes for a weekend motorcycle ride to the Poconos and some scenic routes while there. Sent the routes to a few others and they were all messed up on everyone's GPS. Seems Basecamp defaults back to Off Road somewhere during the process of making, saving and sending the routes to the GPS even though I had it set to Motorcycle before I started. After we realized what was going on we all recalculated using motorcycle or Automobile on the GPS and the routes were fine.

Its still baffles me that I have to do my searches on the GPS, MapQuest, Google Maps, or something and send them to Basecamp because it can't find a thing by itself. It is still a dumb, tedious, frustrating experience every time I try to use the program.

the Route tool will do the same thing except draw the route line between two.

1. click on the binocular "find" icon to bring up the find toolbar if it is not already visible.
2. select "address" in the first of the three find boxes.
3. type a city, state, country into the "near" box
4. type a street address into the "containing" box.

If you typed it the way it is the database, mostly likely you'll see your desired result first on the list. If you agreed in part, it may well still be there, somewhere.

Possibly someone else will respond with a better way.

Clicking Find>Find All will open on the right TOP RESULTS in a black bar...to the right is a icon (Open Find Options) this will give you better and more choices.

Hope this helps!

Phone number and addresses

I can not find where to put the address and phone number in the waypoint for BaseCamp.

Thanks Mary

Click on any one of YOUR waypoints (POI) double click will open a Properties page, within that page you can add much information... in that opened window you can add NOTES...at the bottom of NOTES you can add links to a website if they have one.

Sidenote:
Sharing a waypoint from list to list by meaning of copying will copy all the data..if you change info later in that waypoint it is changed in all your shared list or folders. NOW..if you duplicate a waypoint between lists or folders..and make a change...it only changes in that list...the major difference between copy and duplicate.

Hope this helps!

I keep a POI folder with .gpx files on Jill.

Where is this file on my computer from Basecamp?

I imported my files to Basecamp but when I change them they don't change in my original file.

(Looks like I am trying BaseCamp again)

Two ways: Your data in MY Collections in Folder and List can be saved to your computer in two steps. With my collection highlighted (click one time)File>Backup...follow the next step and select the Master file on your computer for BaseCamp and GPX files.
OR
If you want to save a newly created file on your computer created with BaseCamp..Click on the file (highlighted) and then File>Export>Export selection and then place it on your computer file for GPX data or your Master file for BaseCamp collections.
Note: you can do this for a whole Folder or List as well.

Hope this helps!

Routes that do funny...check this first!

Before starting to create a new route, check your profile and preferences...two ways..
Click : Edit>Options> will bring up properties window..Click Active profile> check your mode of travel... open the Routing tab and here you find all the options...open the window to customize the speeds as well...Save ..this will be your profile for that mode of travel in all BaseCamp routes until you change it...
Second Way:
When you create a route...click on the route to highlight it...double click will open the properties window...several tabs...click on "route options" will give you option to change your profile for this route... take a long look at this window many options and here you change the route color and other things and revert or recalculate.

Hope this helps!

MapSource I love it too...but BaseCamp is the new kid in town!

I recently attended a seminar on GPSs and BaseCamp..wanted to share this for what it may be worth.

Garmin has not updated MapSource for a couple years now... BaseCamp will replace it.. MapSource and your GPS will at some point be of no use.. together.

When your GPS is connected to your Computer with BaseCamp...they shake hands and exchange the knowledge between the two units...if your GPS is older model...it has limited features and knowledge and BaseCamp will not give it more than it can take...so you will only get what your GPS has to offer. BaseCamp connected to a handheld mountain type..know that and will share information for hikers..trails and such...likewise connected with an automobile GPS, will relate information good to car or truck travel, likewise if a Zumo is connected it assumes you on motorcycle and take you to the backroad...you can change that by changing your preference in the active profile window. Therefore BaseCamp is the one software for all applications.
Yes there is a high learning curve (for me).

Now with Folders and List all your data is before you in files...you can move, copy, duplicate, delete or whatever in one place...no more the need to go to that computer file to hunt a file..it's there in front you if you have taken time to import your data in GPX files from your computer.

Personally I have 25,000 waypoints (POI)and routes in about 50 lists in 10 Folders. You can even create a new MY Collection (but I want go there for now)...

One point that think would help many...when you begin using BaseCamp...use the DRIVING profile..this is more like a general MapSource file..then when you advance ...you can change to other profiles.

Hope this helps for what it may be worth...if not well I spun the windmill a while tonight:-)
