Anyone own Garmin Nuvi 1490 LMT and able to get voices using WAV files?

Hi Everyone!
I need help to get voice alerts by using WAV files. I have done everything and follow all the instruction giving on this board of getting voice alerts using WAV files without MP3 capability but with no success. I honestly don't know what I did wrong but doesn't work on my unit. Can anyone please help me and show me steps by steps how you did it on your unit.

Thanks!

It will work for you once we've found the issue

First off, can we assume you are successfully loading and being able to use POI files (csv or gpx) with POILoader with your nuvi and you are seeing the icon (bmp files) when you plan a route to a custom POI and arrive at the destination--and that you're using POILoader in Manual mode and are setting alerts both by checking the alert box and setting an alert distance? Can you create and use a route to one of your Custom POI locations (found in WhereTo/Extras/Custom) either in real time or simulation mode? Do you get no sound or a "boing" when arriving at a Custom POI now? Is it true that you've tried loading several POI files with several wav files and none give you alerts but each will give you a boing when arriving at one?

Assuming you've followed the FAQs for loading POIs to Garmin devices unable to use mp3 files, I'm not sure that any additional step-by-step instruction is going to work. The nuvi 1490LMT is no different than other nuvis in this regard.

The most common causes of failed wav voice alerts are:

1) computer double extensions (the "wav" file attempting to be loaded is xxx.wav.wav because your computer (if a PC) has not turned off "Hide extensions...." in Folder Options so it looks to be xxx.wav on your PC but is really xxx.wav.wav;

2)Improperly named wav files;*

3) you have no sox.exe, the wrong version of sox.exe or have sox.exe in the wrong location in your computer hard drive;**

4) your nuvi does not have alerts enabled (probably one of the Settings options);

5) you have bad wav files (unlikely if you're obtaining your wav files from The Factory).

When loading POIs, are you letting POILoader replace your existing POI files on the nuvi? If not, there's a chance you have an earlier POI file with no associated wav file and that's what you're nuvi is using rather than the new one with a wav.

We're here to work with you so don't give up. If you can answer the questions asked here, we'll be better equipped to locate your issue.

* If your POI file, for instance, is
RestAreasCombined(Ver.AN).csv

then your wav file must be renamed to be
RestAreasCombined(Ver.AN).wav

noting that capitalization, etc. is important.

** Sox.exe needs to be in the computer directory that contains POILoader.exe (not in the directory with the csv, wav and bmp files). If you've used earlier versions of POILoader, note that it's possible that you have two versions of POILoader installed on your computer and if sox.exe is in the older one's directory, it'll fail.

I have the 1490 and followed

I have the 1490 and followed the instructions found on this site and it converted my wav to MP3 automatically. Do a search for 1490 and wav

It worked on mine which is 1390t

It is correct that Sox.exe must be install on the computer.

The nuvi uses either a wav file or an mp3 file

The nuvi uses either a wav file or an mp3 file, not both. It does no conversion of the file. If you have mp3 voice files and you need wav files YOU must convert the file or create a new one.

CraigW did an excellent job of posing questions that might lead you to the root of your problem.

For future questions, please remember that everyone of us seems to approach a task in a different way so saying that you followed all the instructions on this board is quite different than saying that "I followed the instructions of charlesd45 in 'How do I get voice alerts using wav files for units without mp3 capability?'" Detail about the steps one took to do a task are helpful in finding out where things went wrong.

2 more thoughts

Two more thoughts (as if all my points above weren't enough--sorry about that)

1) Back in 2008 you had similar issues getting mp3 alert audio with your nuvi 360. You never responded as to whether you got the mp3 files to work from the help that was offered:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19295

It'd be helpful for us to know now if you ever did get the mp3 files to work with the 360 since it may help us understand where the problem may be with your 1490LMT and wav audio (since the 360 and mp3 files don't need sox.exe).

2) As you go through the various help files on loading POIs to Garmin nuvi devices, many talk of setting up different directories for the various POI files. Start simple--don't create subdirectories--just have one directory for POILoader to look to for all csv, bmp and wav files and get audio alerts to work. After you've got the audio, then think about the other stuff. For what it's worth, I don't do the multiple subdirectory technique that many love and I'm OK with the way my Custom POIs appear on my nuvis. (I'm probably just too lazy to try it.)

OK, I lied--make it 3

3) If--wait, let's make it when--you succeed, please come back and post your success and let us (and others in the future) know what you did to get your audio working. You are not the first with failed audio alerts issues and you certainly won't be the last.

Good luck!

When you get things working, your experience can be very helpful to others as CraigW indicates. Please let us know.

Side note: good job, CraigW!

understanding & using .wav files

Gary Hayman has a great article on .wav files. Check it out. I make my own all the time with the help of this article and with help from members here.

I got my 1490lmt to announce

I got my 1490lmt to announce my .wav alerts of cams by installing the sox.exe and placing it in the poi loader folder.

No response?

roannguyen hasn't responded, so due to their past record, I think I would wait until we get some kind of answer as to what they have tried.

No sense wasting our time and server space if they have already resolved the problem.

Have you check the spec. on WAV?

I, too, used to have the same problem. Many WAV files downed from POI Factory would not work. Until one day, I read a post (Don't remember where, sorry), that 1490 only accept a specific type of wav file.

It has to be:
Bit Rate: 705 kbps
Audio Sample Size: 16 Bit
Channel: 1 (Mono)
Audio Sample Rate: 44 KHz
Audio Format: PCM

Many people probably dismiss my claim. However, my personal experience is that all WAV files play nicely with my 1490 from that day on.

You can use your favor audio program to check or convert the non-working WAV files. I use Audacity, it works great for me. You can find it at

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

.

I think the post was http://www.poi-factory.com/node/32723

But - I am interested in those .wav files you downloaded from poi-factory. I checked some 50 sound files and could not find anything but .mp3 files.

Oh my

Goodness, I thought "this can't be" but then I checked around, too. It appears that all wav files have been removed from The Factory.

I remember vaguely reading a while ago that a contributor of many (all?) of the wav files asked that they be removed and TPTB must have removed them all.

Obviously, I downloaded my wav files from The Factory before they were removed and I haven't looked to add or change any recently and that's my only excuse for being so surprised.

This does add a "maybe bad wav conversions is the source of failed audio alerts" to this and future discussions.

SOX.exe does the conversion for you

Those specifications are correct for probably all Garmin Nuvis that require wav files.

However I don't think there is any need to convert non-standard wav files prior to running POILoader because the reason that POILoader uses SOX.exe is to do the conversion for you.

(Sox.exe is capable of converting a wide range of wav file specs to the standard Garmin wav specs you mentioned.)

I have tested quite a few different wav files including one with these specs:

Bit Rate: 1411 kbps
Audio Sample size: 16 bit
Channels: 2 (stereo)
Audio Sample Rate: 44 kHz
Audio format: PCM

After I loaded the associated POI with POILoader ver 2.6.1, the alert sound played correctly.

When POILoader called up Sox.exe to convert the wav file, the resulting converted wav file was stored as temp.wav located at C:\%homepath%\Local Settings\Temp\POILoader on my XP computer.

Playing that file confirmed that it was based on the original wav file, and looking at the properties confirmed that the specs had been changed to the standard Garmin wav specs.

Response using WAV files to get voices alerts

I install the sox.exe and place it in the pio loader folder but when i run the POI Loader to install the new custom POIs, its successfully installed custom PIOs but then I get this warning.

Unable to convert C:\Documents and setting\roannguyen\desktop\roan's poi\Redlight Camera.wav to the proper format. therefore this audio file was not transfer.

I honestly don't know what I did wrong. Can anyone explain what I did wrong and how do I go about to fix the problem.

Thanks

SOX Version?

You may be using the wrong version of SOX. Use this one:

Thanks

In tests I made while trying to help another user a while back, I found that having the wrong version of sox.exe will not cause that message.

What does cause that message is not having sox.exe directly in the folder where POI Loader.exe is. (If you unzipped a sox package to the POI Loader folder, sox.exe will be in a sub folder).

Also Poi Loader.exe may not be where you think it is, or you may have more than one version installed.

You need to describe exactly how you "installed" sox.exe and also exactly how you run poi loader.

Also we need to know what operating system you are using, and what version of POI Loader you are using in order to know where POI Loader is located.

i did it

what I did wrong is that I didn't run the PIO loader from the program file. When run the PIO loader from the program file, its work perfectly.

Thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!

Congrats!

No wav or mp3 POI alerts with the Nuvi 1100 LM

I have tried and tested everything mentioned in this forum to resolve the no sound alert issue but so far to no avail.

I will keep at this till I figure it out and report back.

Just to simplify your task, mp3 audio will never work on a nuvi 1100LM. Wav files will work:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

POI wav alerts now working Nuvi 1100LM

It now works perfect !!

Thanks for all your help.

What I was doing wrong was not going into the manual mode of the POI loader and setting the distance (1000 ft) for each audio wav alert.

Glad you got it working
