Wav file not working for Speed Camera Poi

Could use a bit of help here from my POI brethren.

I have uploaded the speed camera POI file but all I get is the beeps, not the wav file sound I also uploaded.

What I did:

1. Downloaded the files (POI, bmp and wav)

2. Made sure all 3 files are named the same. (No double extensions)

3. Uploaded with POI loader in manual mode. Speed set to 0.

Sox?

Have you installed sox.exe to the directory that contains POILoader.exe?

Proximity Points

have you turned on Proximity Points?

Proximity Points must be turned on by
Tools > Settings > Proximity Points > Proximity Alerts

By the way, thanks for the way you stated what you had done. Often, people do not give enough information to understand the problem.

See page 51 of your manual. If you do not have a manual, follow the instructions in
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30393

hmm...seems I needed to add yet more info! LOL

*Edit*
4. Sox.exe installed correctly.

5. Proximity Alerts: On.

couple of items

Rath,

You state the files have the same name and there are no double extensions. I strongly suggest you double and triple check to be certain there are no hidden extensions.

Also, you state you used the manual mode to set a speed of zero for those cameras. I STRONGLY suggest you rethink this. The speed camera file from here has a speed for most cameras set using the @ symbol. This way you get a warning for approaching the camera and the warning repeats only if you are above the speed. Setting the speed to zero means the warning will constantly go off whenever you are near - trust me, it will drive you absolutely bonkers.

As to SOX, there are several versions floating around. Be certain you are using the version from the FAQ as we know it will work. There are also a couple of different directories Garmin has used in the past for POI Loader. The current version loads from within Program Files if you are using Windows. Make certain SOX is there and not under the root directory.

Another test

Rath,

Some further thoughts--since you're also downloading a bmp icon, are you seeing the icon when you get the beeps? Seeing the icon but not the audio is one thing while not seeing the icon and not hearing the audio may lead us in other directions.

Which audio file have you chosen and is it from here at The Factory?

Did we determine that you're using a PC and not a Mac? What version of POI Loader? What version of sox (the one from here at The Factory)? What directory is your POI Loader in? Ditto for sox? Ditto for your POI files, bmps and wavs?

Here's another thing you could try in case your issue is only with the speed camera file loaded manually with a 0 mph alert. Download and install the Rest Areas Combined POI file, plus a wav audio and bmp, then load them in manual mode with an alert distance of several thousand feet.

Test this out either by driving past an interstate rest area or by simulating it. Are you seeing the Rest Area icon and hearing the audio alert now?

Checked

Checked and re-checked. No double extensions.

Box Car,
From the install instructions from this site: "For speed cameras choose a speed alert and the default speed is zero.
Do not enter a number because the speed for each speed camera is inside the file and overrides the default zero on being loaded into the GPS."

Are you suggesting a different way of installing the file?

I read this as inputting a zero will allow the speeds in the file to be used instead.

Sox is installed correctly. I know this because it works with all the other POI's I've uploaded into my GPS. This is the only one that is not working properly. Thanks again for all the help thus far.

With the word speed in the

With the word speed in the name you should get the bong alert if nothing else. Most likely the problem is double extensions or the name not the same for the wav. They have to be the same except for the extension.

The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.This is for XP.

Aha, that changes things. Ignore my most recent post above this since you are getting correct audio for other POIs...

When I load the speed and redlight cameras, I also use manual mode, but I don't alter any of the settings like adding a 0 which I gather you are doing. What happens if you try loading speed cameras without additional POI Loader setting tinkering?

I have to admit that since the speed camera file was changed to only alert when above the speed limit, I've not been able to test it since Arizona has removed most of their speed camera locations and I've not gone to the effort of simulating a route past one. Good luck.

@Rath

What I do with the speed cameras since they have the speed alert. You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and build the distance in for the alert. When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download. Once installation is completed you will need to set up the preferences you want first. Under options click on preferences. For example using ft for input. Under units you will see editor, select Imperial/US. For Field Read select metric and Field save select Metric. After setting your preferences click on file and click open to select from your computer the file you want to build the distance alerts for. Then go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick proximity. Under new field value put in the distance in feet you want for the alert. Then click replace all. You now have distance set for each custom poi. Then save as a gpx file. You will lose the built in alert if you save as a csv file. The nice thing about this method is that you can use express mode for poiloader. This will give you both speed and distance. If you want to take the speed out just select speed on field name and leave new field value blank.

Craigw, When loading the

Craigw,
When loading the file, the 0 is already there, so I do not change it, I just click "Next".

Charlesd45,
There are no double extensions, I've checked and made sure. Also, POIloader is set you've described. This is the only file that I am having a problem with. All the other ones work fine and play the wav file I have associated with them.

Did you have Poiloader 2.61

Did you have Poiloader 2.61 before you downloaded Speed Cameras? If not the 2.61 moved the poiloader to new location in program files. If you just installed the 2.61 your old alerts will not work either.Have you try them latetly if by chance you just downloaded 2.61?Also try another wav file beside the one you are trying now if 2.61 is not the problem.

Edit.If you use Extra Poi Editor you can also use the replace field to link the wav file to the file if you save as a gpx.Takes the hassle out of problems with double extensions etc.

What About The WAV File Formatting

It sounds like you downloaded the WAV file from the POI-Factory, but I can't be sure from your original post. Which specific WAV file do you have and where did you get it from (download link)?

Is the file formatted correctly? Right-click on the file and select Properties-->Summary. Here are the Properties for a wav file that I know works on my GPS:

Bit Rate: 705kbps
Audio sample size: 16 bit
Channels: 1 (mono)
Audio sample rate: 44 KHz
Audio format: PCM

Does it play correctly on your PC?

Also, if using 2.6.1 now and previously using an earlier version, it wouldn't hurt to run POI Loader and have it "Remove all previously installed custom POIs from you device" once, then load the new ones so that you know you're starting anew on the nuvi with no left over POI files. And as charles says, 2.6.1 installs to a different location than the older POI Loaders and many have been caught--including me--to not having reinstalled sox.exe to the new directory.

I Got Burned

The only reason I even suggested checking the format was I got burned in a similar manner a couple years ago. I spent hours playing around with sample rates, channels, etc.

Glad you got it working. grin

POI factory Speed camera File

The POI Factory speed camera file has a custom speed for each location (good in Canada and the US).

When running POI Loader in manual, in the "speed" field, use the default zero. Do not enter another number, and the custom speed inside the file for each location will be the speed that is loaded. If a positive number greater than zero is entered, that becomes the same speed for all locations, and that is not desired.

It is true that if you drive past a speed camera below the posted speed limit, then NOTHING happens!

The source for this info is POI Loader Help, which has all the facts, but written in a hard-to-understand manner. I wrote the FAQ (which is quoted in this thread) to be as simple as possible -

Feedback is invited if the FAQ is not accurate in all respects. Remember that FAQs are written by POI Factory members. The info could change with the introduction of an updated POI Loader, another nuvi, or a firmware update.

Since the @{custom speed} for each poi inside the speed camera csv file trumps all other information in the file name and the manual mode of POI Loader, I would think it does not matter whether one leaves the number at zero or changes it.

Whatever one does in the Poi Loader manual mode dialog box, except placing a check mark in the “Ignore this file” box, will give the same result – the Poi Factory speed camera data will be loaded as-is from the csv file.

If only the speed camera csv file is being loaded (which may be the case for Rath), then the same result can be achieved by simply running Poi Loader in the express mode.

The ability of Poi Loader 2.6.1 to give different names to the .gpi file could give rise to a different way of handling the combined presence of speed camera, redlight camera, and rest area poi files similar the way some of us have been manually renaming the .gpi files previous to version 2.6.0
