3490LMT Continuous Reboot -

 

Good morning all.

Purchased this unit just before Christmas. Issues started after I updated to the latest software update (4.40) and I'm running 4.01 up-loader on my PC. I've noticed this thing reboots continuously while either searching for traffic or if I use the voice command feature for any function. I deleted all but the English, British, Australian & Italian languages.

It functions normally for the first 10 minutes if you manually enter the destination, then reboots.

It also reboots for no apparent reason. I originally thought the battery meter was reading incorrect so I drained the battery and charged it in the car. Battery to 93% (hold the green battery button on the main screen for 15 seconds or so), went out for a spin. Same thing. This time, I could at least get as far the "agree" screen. Progress!

Called Garmin to outline the events, walked me through a hard reset (which means we have no clue) and asked him if AC power may be cleaner than DC power. Said probably not, but you can try it. (max voltage is 5V 1A). I just happen to have a Samsung AC charger running 5V 750ma & used that to bring it up to 100%. No change, still reboots.

A second call to Garmin outlined the identical scenario (hard reset, latest software). S/N noted and here's where to send your unit to repair / exchange (In Canada, it's Raytec in Laval Quebec).

At times it works great. On a recent trip to the Detroit Autoshow it reset for an hour continuously. I lost track on the 53th reboot. When it did actually power up, there was no record of ever having manually inputted the address. It started cutting out again when I needed to cross the border. I inputted Washington Avenue, Detroit, MI USA and it was directing me to Washington Ave, Sudbury, Ontario. I guess it just didn't want me to leave Ontario. LOL Who needs a radio when the Garmin will keep you entertained!!

Using my iPhone, I mistakenly typed "Cono centre, detroit" & it came back as Do you want Cobo Centre, Detroit? Typed yes and directed me to the correct tunnel, distance (6.23km) & time 11minutes. WOW

Anyway, before I send this puppy back to Garmin, any suggestions? Is this a common problem with the newer stuff? (I have a Garmin 1370T I use for Europe that is flawless).

I thought the hard RESET

I thought the hard RESET would fix the problem. I've had my 3490 since it first came out without a single issue. I've heard that some upgrades will make your unit unstable if it wasn't fully powered at the time of the update.
I think it's the best PND that Garmin has made and I have usually upgraded once per year for the last 10-15 years. No worries, Garmin will take care of you.

I was just playing with this again and it seems to start looping right after the "do you want to start navigation" prompt.

Don't you just love Garmin products....they have never ever had a unit that doesn't have problems. I have a 2450LM but don't use it often...love my built in unit with zero problems. Does some thing less than Garmin units but on the other hand does more things also...

Are you on v.4.40 yet? Wondering if this is an isolated issue with one unit or due to the firmware update itself. I sent in a very long detailed email to Garmin's product manager RE: the internal storage not being deleted, InstaSearch cannot be cleared, etc. and I have not received a responce as of yet.

Anyone else having this issue? I just updated today (unfortunately) to v.4.40 so it's too soon for me to tell. I'm almost sorry I did especially since I don't have an Android phone so the Smartlink feature does me no good.

Mine has also rebooted a few times on various ocassions and I also noticed it runs pretty warm at times which I don't understand

not sure if my situation

not sure if my situation will help or not, but had an issue with my 2350LMT only rebooting when doing searches. Nothing worked, then I called garmin and they had me check for updates on dashboard, etc, but nothing was there.

They suggested I check for updates on mygarmin.com and low and behold a traffic update was available. I took the update and haven't had a reboot in 3 days now...

Might be worth a shot if you haven't tried that route

What's the status?

This kind of died off. I wonder it this was an isolated incident? I haven't had time to run the 3490 much lately so are you still experiencing any reboots?
