custom POI's on the SD card of my 1490

Hello all, Tried to load custom POI's to my SD on my 1490lmt using the POI Loader and it does not work. However, when I direct to the internal memory it works. Does that mean I can't download custom POI's to the SD?

What version are you using because 2.7.0 has some issues with the correct file extensions.

If you look at the nuvi with windows do you see a file with .poi there? It should be a .gpi

When I tried loading

with an older version of Poi Loader to the sd card it didn't work either. It would just stall at some point. I upgraded to the latest version and then instead of trying to load the poi's while the sd card was in my gps I loaded them with the sd card in the adapter direct into my computer. I was able to load them this way and then insert the sd card into my gps.

What does not work?

I assume you pointed POILoader to your SD card and that it recognized it properly. If this is not so, please advise.

Did POILoader finish normally - telling you that x POIs had ben loaded?

When you look at your SD card using Windows Explorer, what do you see with today's date (that being the file POILoader created)? Please advise.

Works for me with Version 2.5.4.0

I have a 1490 and I always put my POI's on the micro SD card. I know it's an old version. But if it's Garmin and it works, don't mess with it. It can always get worse.

POI Loader & SD issues

Thanks for the help all,

-I downloaded the latest version of the POI Loader a few days ago so I assume it's the OK.

-Yes, when I'm downloading it asked me where would I like to download to.

-Yes, It downloaded normally. The date is also current.

Last night I removed the Custom POI's from the internal and reloaded on the SD with the POI Loader. From my PC I can see the Custom POI files on the SD card but when I start my unit up it does not point out the I have info in my SD card.
I removed custom POI's from the SD & then reloaded internally and it works.

Since you can see the file

Since you can see the file on the SD card...What is the extension to it? It should be .gpi and not .poi

Poi Loader version 2.7.0 has been giving mixed results of what the file extension name is. It should always end in .gpi

Also the files will be found under where to/extras/ custom poi.

SD file

Hello, Reloaded onto the SD card and the file shows as a .poi file. How or what should I do to make this a .gpi file? Thanks for your help.

As a .poi file on the SD card, it does not show up under custom poi's. When loaded in internal memory, all the info shows up in the custom poi's

Rename the file

Just change the extension from poi to gpi and it will work.

Files working on SD card

A big thanks for your help in this matter Pwohirab. I have just basic computer skills & the help in these forums are great. It's been quite interesting customizing POI files for my unit.

POI loader - select computer

I tell POI loader to save the POIs to the computer (not to the Nuvi GPS). I tell POI Loader which folder to store the file.

Then I put the SDHC card in my computer and copy the files onto the SDHC card.

Next I do it with another SDHC card for my wife's Nuvi.

I think it is quicker doing it this way.

Howard

If you current POI Loader

If you current POI Loader works, stay with it unless there is really a need for a change or other pluses have been added since the main reason for this app is to install POI on your sd card or unit.

Pois to nuvi sd card

The POI loader creates a folder on the sd card called Garmin with a sub folder POI that contains the poi file. The newer nuvi's do not look for the Garmin folder but rather a POI folder. I installed a poi file using the POI Loader to the unit and it goes in a POI folder NOT the Garmin folder. I then moved the POI folder to the sd card and it works. Spent several minutes with a software person at Garmin. He was going to bring it to the developers attention

They need to fix the mess

They need to fix the mess they created with poi loader version 2.7.0 before anything else.
