GPS use on a plane

I used my NUVI 350 on a Jet Blue flight today from NY to FL.
I asked the pilot if it was ok and was told no problem. He didn't think it would pick up a signal as it could not be used till electronic items could be turned on.
They were wrong, it picked up the satelites faster than if I turned it on on the ground. At 575mph it went right to full bars and was accurate to 18ft. Even the altitude was off by only a few feet.
The map moved right along and it even showed me the roads and attractions below us.
I told him as I was leaving the plane and he was amazed it worked so good.

Mute

I've had challenges acquiring the satellites when I used to sit in the aisle seats. I started selecting window seats and held the GPS against the window. No problem.

I do mute my unit so I wouldn’t disturb the neighbors, though.

Alerts

I guess a standard 1/4 mile alert distance doesn't quite cut it at that speed. You better run your POIs thru POILoader with a slightly longer distance. grin

Good to know.

Same Experience Here, Too!

I'd meant to bring along a GPS and try it for years, but had always forgotten to pack it until a cross-country trip in the Spring of 2010. Amazing! The Nuvi 350 did, indeed, lock onto the birds very, very quickly and indicated a very strong signal. I was next to the window, but ended up passing the unit around to some of my seatmates and never once had a reception issue. It was almost like eliminating 6 or 7 miles of atmosphere resulted in a substantially stronger signal.

I've gotta say, it sure is fun to watch the map display progress along at 600 miles an hour! (I'm pretty sure the jetstream contributed to that figure a bit... smile )

I did this with a friend's borrowed streetpilot 350...he was a little surprised at the Max speed reported...lol. I was terrified of losing it so I carried it thru security in my coat pocket...

Maybe he had chicken on his mind.

Plane

I have used mine on flights also. I try to site near a window for best results. I set it to off road and type in the airport im flying to and the plane fly's pretty much right on the route line on my Garmin. It even tells me when i will get to the airport.

That's Funny

For a second there, I thought we were on the same plane!!!

I was flying between BWI & Tampa this past weekend & operating MY Nuvi 350. I'v done it in the past so I was not surprised that it worked better than on the ground. It certainly is entertaining to watch the map change quickly when on a scale that the 500+ mph shows the rapid movement.

Most people sitting nearby seem interested in what is being displayed & what you can do with it. I certainly gave a bit of advertising for the POI Factory in the discussions to those who owned Garmins.

Check before flying

It's a good idea to check with the airline before you take the GPS. My wife flew American Airlines to Austin in April and while setting up her flight I noticed that they didn't allow using a GPS on a flight.

It amazes me that people in such a high tech industry are so misinformed about GPS receivers. It's OK to use a laptop on a flight, some airlines even have wifi, but don't use a GPS.

GPS on plane

I bet the people on the North West plane last year that over flew the airpot by quit a few miles would have been happy to have one.
I guess that is why American doesn't like passengers to use one.

I tried...

it 4 years ago with my new 360...fun to watch. I wanted to leave the 580+ MPH on it just in case I was stoped by the law, just to see the look on their face! Never got stopped!!

You evidently didn't try hard enough. smile

Works great!

On a United flight, the crew let me use my hand-held the whole trip. They also had the the aircraft's radio frequency on a headset channel. I also have used my GPS on AMTRAK and on tourist trains.

Been There

Done that. It's fun keeping that 500 mph top speed reading on the unit to astound friends wink

The only bummer is having to turn the unit off (even though it isn't broadcasting anything) before landing. It'd be a hoot watching the descent and actual touchdown.

Cheers
