3760T gpx to csv

I have loaded a .csv a few weeks back which runs fine, as expected there are no icons on the screen. Last night I down loaded as a GPX file of geocaches from http://www.opencaching.com, opened the file in Excel, shifted the columns and then saved as a .csv file, loaded it with the POI loader to my 3760t and this file now has the geocache icon on the maps (not every entry or line has the same icon). Both .csv files look the same. I have not loaded the a bmp file with the same name

Can any body tell me how this has happened. Garmin customer support can not tell me how this has happened.

While it's possible to open

While it's possible to open a GPX in Excel, I have to wonder how you were able to manipulate the data in such a fashion without losing the XML-based coding within the GPX file. In updating Historic Ships of the US and Canada, I tried on multiple occasions to open the GPX file in an Office program (Word or Excel) and save it. Each time I lost the XML coding.

For my problem, the solution was to use Notepad ++ with the spellchecker add-on, which preserved everything. How did you do it in Excel?

Just a thought

It sounds like POI Loader compiled the gpx file, not the csv file.

Sure, you can open a CSV

Sure, you can open a CSV file in Excel. However, GPX and CSV are two different formats. GPX supports the icon encoding you mentioned in your geocaching file. CSV does not.

A CSV file is in a format like shown below, and the order of the information can be altered easily in Excel:

Quote:

A GPX file (example below) looks a lot like a HTML webpage, and its information requires either thorough knowledge of XML coding to do the job in notepad, or a program like Extra POI Editor.

After the film was complete, the ship was leased and then purchased by the Maritime Museum of San Diego who has restored her to sailing condition as of September 2007. There are additional items that can be put into a GPX file, such as individual icons. The GPX example above is from my Historic Ships file. I didn't use individual icons or photographs in the entries, so the code for those items does not appear in the file.

the 3760 has strange things

the 3760 has strange things going on, I have a csv file with the same company as on the standard POI that Garmin supply with their maps and when I looked at under the extras for the company the phone number was included. So it has gone to another file to get the phone number and inserted with information in my csv file. But I don't know how it would have happened with this one as it hasn't happened with all the others which I have loaded. for example the file from http://www.geocaching.com which I would have thought would have been treated the same

Is there are specific reason why are you convert to CSV rather than just using the GPX file?

I think you hit upon the answer to his problem.

He, and many others out there I believe convert from GPX to CSV in the mistaken belief they will save space. POI Loader doesn't work like that, if I recall.

Custom POI files do not interact in any way, shape or form with the built in POI files. So you need to examine your csv files again, because the information must already be in the csv.

Just tell us where to get the original file. We need to know what you entered into the search field on OpenCaching in order to get the same file.

OpenCaching says it will output a GPX file, if that is the case, the GPX will load using POI Loader. There is no need to convert the file. A GPX doesn't use any more space on your unit than a CSV, the file is read by POI Loader and compiled into a GPI file which is what the unit uses. It will use a GPX directly as a route file or as a list of favorite locations depending on where it is stored in the unit. I know the 37XX series uses different locations than others, so I can't tell you where in the Nuvi to place the files.

Why in the world are you trying to open GPX files in Excel?

Why not use an application designed for GPX files?

Open with EPE

they're not excel files

ShenanigansNZ wrote:

GPX and CSV are both TEXT files. It just happens that Excel will handle a CSV file as it is often used to exchange data between database programs. Excel is a database manager designed for numeric data.

--

Excel Doesn't Handle GPX Files. Use Something Else.

ShenanigansNZ wrote:

Just to add my two cents, this is was what I was asking you at the beginning of the thread, though I wasn't as direct as Motorcycle Mama in asking it.

The others have mentioned what you can use to open a GPX file, so I need not duplicate their efforts.

Lets start again, I down

Lets start again, I down loaded a gpx file from http://www.opencaching.com, which opened in my mapping software OK, but using POI loader, it will not load onto my 3760T.
So I opened it in excel and converted it into a csv file, by moving the columns into the correct order for a csv file, it then loaded onto the 3760T ok.

The question is without any related bmp files I have on the screen some large icons in the shape of the geocache box. does any body know what caused the icons appear?

I have since gone back to ttp://www.opencaching.com, but they have change the format of the gpx file and I can see the difference in note pad so I am no longer able to get the same result again.

The question is why did these icon appear on the screen of the gps when I am using csv file.

I know you are going to say it can not happen but it has.

--

1. What do you mean by "using POI Loader, it will not load"? What exactly happens?

2. Excel is not the proper software to convert a GPX file to CSV. Use EPE.

3. The Geocache icon likely appeared if you copied the GPX file to the device directly and they loaded at Favorites instead of Custom POIs.

I tried downloading

ShenanigansNZ wrote:

I tried downloading a GPX file from opencaching.com and the first barrier I ran into was a popup stating an incorrect value for bbox. The site also is a beta, so that also indicates some things may not be working correctly. A disclaimer also pops up stating the user takes all responsibility for the data, so they do not make any claims regarding the files. The statement may also mean they take no responsibility for the content of the files.

ShenanigansNZ wrote:

You keep saying you opened the file in Excel, unless the software is completely different on your side of the equator, Excel does not work with GPX files. This can also mean the file extension is wrong and it is actually a CSV file with a GPX extension.

The other point is you state you "opened it in your mapping software." This can be another source of problems. What mapping software are you using? Of course, the other point being if I couldn't get the file to download using FireFox 3.6.17, what are you using for a browser to download the file?

ShenanigansNZ wrote:

When you download the file, where are you downloading it to? If the target is the GPS, then you are placing a GPX file on the unit and those can carry symbol information.

My personal guess is the site is still undergoing development and was made available without fully tested software. That's one reason it states BETA and the fact you are seeing file formats change is another. I would just stay away from the site until the major bugs are worked out. But then, I don't cache either.

Why not just use geocaching.com?

Why not just use geocaching.com? The site has been around longer, has a better reputation, has far more caches available, and is also free, etc.
