Batteries & Heat (keeping a GPS exposed to the sun)

The battery in my 1250T now lasts 1/3 as long as that in my older 250. I wondered why. I came across this excerpt from a link to a very informative article. It talks about LiIon batteries in general:

If possible, store the battery in a cool place at about a 40% state-of-charge. Some reserve charge is needed to keep the battery and its protection circuit operational during prolonged storage. Avoid keeping the battery at full charge and high temperature. This is the case when placing a cell phone or spare battery in a hot car. Running a laptop computer on the mains has a similar temperature problem. While the battery is kept fully charged, the inside temperature during operation rises to 45°C (113°F).

The interesting part is "Avoid keeping the battery at full charge and high temperature." Exactly the conditions in which most GPS units (including my 1250T) are kept.
Oh well... sad

The answer is simple: take battery operated electronics with you when you leave the vehicle.

sounds awfully simple. I keep my GPS's in my trunk, 10's of degrees cooler, no radient in the trunk, under clothing...have no problems whatsoever!

trunk won't make it cooler

I don't think the trunk will be cooler than any other part of the vehicle if it spends enough time in the sun.

Cooler

He meant the COOLER, which sure as heck better be a lot cooler.

Heat and electronics are

Heat and electronics are never a good mix. Taking that gps with you solves a lot of problems. The first thing that comes to mind is theft protection.
