Warning To Trapster Users

Millions of e-mail addresses and passwords may have been stolen from Trapster, an online service that warns iPhone, Android and BlackBerry owners of police speed traps, the company announced yesterday.

California-based Trapster has begun alerting its registered users and has published a short FAQ on the breach. "If you've registered your account with Trapster, then it's best to assume that your e-mail address and password were included among the compromised data," the FAQ stated.

What next

...if people would apply themselves to helping instead of stealing it would be a place to looked up to.

Great App

Now to start changing ALL those passwords

Thanks for the headsup!

N/T

Looked like a scam

Interesting, I got one of the emails to that effect. However, the link it wanted me to go to had nothing to do w/ Trapster. It looked just like the old "someone has stolen your eBay info please click here to change your password" scams.

But, being the cautious person that I am, I went directly to the Trapster site and changed my password anyway.

ex trapster user with compromised password

I got the letter from trapster after someone on a cell phone in Indonesia had logged into my email account and attempted to send spam to the people in my address book. Fortunately, the email service locked out my account and notified me before anything got out. I've since changed my passwords to be unique. I know better but got sloppy and didn't even recall even having a trapster account as I've only used poifactory for some time.

password policy

This is a great demonstration why people should use different passwords for different sites. At the very least have secure passwords for email, banking and sales sites and another(s) for the less important stuff. Also, a primary email box(s) for friends, important business and another for site logins isn't a bad idea either.

I'm not really lost.... just temporarily misplaced!

Wheww

Thanks for the info. I have a Rumor Touch that I been trying to download the app to. Maybe it's specifically for the higher end phones. It shows up on the GetJar free apps like many others I have been able to download. This is one I'll pass on and any others that ask for an email address.

Trapster seems to be honest

AND alias email addresses are easy to get. Just make one up for your login, and use a different password.

There's another tool if you want...

I have this Firefox Add-on called Tempomail, you just enter or specify your "real" email, the duration of the bogus' effectiveness, and yer done.

Of course I'd NEVER use it on a forum like POI Factory! Miss POI for GPS President !

Passwords

I usually use one password that I can remember for virtually all general sites that I don't care about security for. I then have a series of secure passwords for banks, and other more sensitive sites.

My email service also allows me to drop any unknown name as in name@address.com into a given address. So I assign the name to the name of the site, like radio@address.com. That way I can see if anyone is spamming me or selling my address. I can also easily automatically move it to trash.

Fortunately, i'm one of

Fortunately, i'm one of those who did not register but was curious about the app. I only downloaded it to check it out and deleted it soon after. I use multiple email accounts for friends, financial, work, shopping and change passwords frequently.

password chage rules

It will be good to remember, that you NEVER change password to any side clicking on link in any email. Even if it promise you end of world if you don't click on included link.

If you need to change password you just go to side, log in as usually you do and than change what you need. You never read warning from banks, that you never give your PIN or password in email, or never click on links in alarming emails from bank, as they never put this type of links into their emails? Use this same rule with any other account and you will be fine, regardless of any attempted scam.

Using alternate e-mail prefixes

I do the same thing... anyname@myemail.com, so I can filter, see where they came from, or auto delete. It's great!
