Help with POI Loader

The POI Loader has always worked fine until today. When I click run for WinZip Self_Exractor I get an error.

POI Loader for WIndows_254.exe
Unable to create temporary folder to extract to,...Possible causes..Do not have proper permission to creat files or folders in your temporary folder. See your system or network administrator.

I deleted the loader, rebooted and downloaded again. Any ideas?

Right click on the installer

Right click on the installer and make sure to "Run as Administrator". See if that helps.

I deleted & then downloaded POI Loader into the Administrator account as POI Loader for Windows. Any more ideas?

POI Loader.

If POI Loader was working OK, why are you trying to install it again? Are you trying to upgrade to a new version? Does the previously installed version still work?

Are you having issues installing POI Loader on your PC? ...or problems with each use of POI Loader when you want to update POI files on your GPS?

It sounds like you're installing POI Loader each time you want to use it.

If you're on a Windows PC, what happens if you click Start/AllPrograms/Garmin/POI Loader? This is the way you want to run POI Loader, not by running Garmin's installation each time you want to run it. You only need to install POI Loader when a new version comes out; i.e., see Change History. It was last updated in Oct. 2009:

{Edit} Looks like alandb has my same questions....

Thanks

I have been installing it each time I use it. But now that does not work either. I have probably done it that way 30 times. I was using an icon on the desktop. Today it didn't work.

Hmm, I feared you might say that. Are you using Windows 7? If so, check out the links in this thread which deals with permissions issues:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31565

...or maybe clean out your temp files:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26280

Your method of installing POI Loader each time you want to use POI Loader may have eventually created more temp files than your PC is happy with.

One final thought: if you normally keep your PC on, or use Sleep or Hibernation rather than Shutdown, it's amazing what a Restart can do to past problems after the PC is rebooted.

Temp files

If you have XP go to start, settings, control panel, click on internet options.Under Browsing History, click delete and you will see temporary internet files, cookies etc.Put check mark in the ones you want to delete. Then click delete at bottom.

I use a program called Advance System Care http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_... the free version that does all kind of goodies including cleaning out temp files.

Good Grief

I did a bad bad thing: I restored my XP back to Jan 4, & deleted the POI loader. Then I re-installed it. It worked. Then I came back on here & read the latest comments. I would not have needed the restore.
I now see that twowheeljay had the same problem a while back. Thanks again to Craig & Charles for the help.
I could not do any of this without the support of the members here.

Holy crap, dude! Why would you install it over and over. Install it ONCE and then just use it after that.

Icon on desktop

If you have C:\Garmin\PoiLoader.exe, then right click on it and do a "send to" "desktop" to create an icon which you will use from now on.

.

spokybob - even though you performed a system restore you still should "clean up" your system. I'd highly recommend CCleaner. http://www.piriform.com/download

Its a free program designed specifically to clean up all of the crap files that build up on a computer over time.

Just download the program, run it, click Analyze, then click Run Cleaner. You'll be amazed how much junk it finds.

And don't worry, it doesn't delete any real files. Just junk files that clog up the system.

If you want to take it one step further then run the Registry clean up tab.

I'm learning

Thanks to both of you.

while you are at it

Why don't you clean out all of the programs that came with your computer that you have never used?

A really good tool for this is Revo Uninstaller. I use the "portable" version (which is freeware) - meaning that you can run the program from the download directory once it is unzipped.

go to
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_downloa...
and then scroll to the bottom of the page and get the portable version.

Good program. I generally

Good program. I generally use PC Decrapifier on computers where the manufacturer only provides a restore partition with the capability of making a backup of that partition.

The best method of removing the crud that came with a computer is a clean install.

Do not do CCleaner registry cleaner

Do not ever run a registry cleaner. It does absolutely no good. It can and will (at times) remove files that are still needed. This will cause a crash that you might not recover from.

The first thing CCleaner asks is if you want to do a backup. Or don't you believe in backing up your registry before doing any housekeeping?

CCleaner & The Registry

I've used CCleaner for years with no problem. I only occasionally run the Registry cleaning function (like after uninstalling a program). As Box Car recommended, I always let CCleaner backup the changes first - but not on the boot drive, should the PC become unbootable.

As Registry programs go, the CCleaner Registry cleaner is one of the most conservative. An overly aggressive Registry cleaner can certainly cause system problems, but the CCleaner Registry cleaner has never caused me a problem.

Just my 2 cents.

I will always backup. I use system restore (but it does not do a complete job of backing up). Erunt does a better job. My data is backed up to 3 different hard drives using 3 different programs.
Lets just suffice to say that if you use a registry cleaner AND you do not know what you are doing you could be in trouble. I will also say that using a cleaner does not increase system performance. In fact it can degrade performance because now the registry is more fragmented.

We can agree on some of the points regarding cleaning the registry - in that if one doesn't have an understanding of what is being done they can, and probably will, cause more damage than help. I did note the tone of the blog wasn't as much against NOT cleaning as it was against clicking on Fix All. You do need to review what is suggested and override the suggestions at times. The same goes with disabling services.
