1490LMT & POI Factory newbie

Hi. I'm new to this site and have just acquired a new Garmon 1490 LMT. For years I have been using a Garmin Quest so the changes in technology are many. I am open to any advice regarding this unit including the best POI's to download. Glad to have found this site and I look forward to learning and sharing.

Add the ones you'll use

I have about 70. Alot depends on what you want to be able to find. The poi files aren't perfect but many times they have more accurate data on locations than the internal map files on your garmin simply because they're more up to date than the map files on your garmin which can be anywhere from 6 months to a year old. Some businesses close and some open more stores during this time.
As far as keeping track of all I set up main poi file on my computer. Within the file make subfolders for each poi you want. This way you can download sounds and icons if you wish and they all be in their own file.

goodluck

@Oldhorse

you are obviously not a beginner to the GPS world, but you may need to do some things to take the maximum advantage of your new 1490.

Start with

Then take a look at

If this is all basic to you, then I suggest "How do you set up and load custom pois with or without categories" by charlesd45 at

Welcome!

If you are active on this

If you are active on this site for three out of five weeks you are able to download the redlight and speed camera POI file that Garmin charges you for their version on their site - this one is kept up to date by the members of this site is is likely more accurate and up to date. This is a must have. There is also a rest area file that you can get right now and set up with proximity alerts through POI Loader to let you know they are coming up on the road in advance.

Also look through the site and see what interests you in terms of POIs. There are many many here and they are well maintained.

Your 1490 uses .wav sound files so if you want custom alert warnings for your POIs use those.

Enjoy your 1490. I enjoy mine.

1490

I'm new also and just got the same GPS. This site is great for information. You can find POIs for almost anything. It depends on your interests. Everyone here is very helpful. The more I play with mine the more I learn. You may want to purchase a micro SD card to increase your capacity.
Good luck and have fun.

they are great links

One thing that threw me in my first times with the uploader :

It doesn't do "just the new points". Make sure you have all the POI files you want on the unit still in the file folder, when you upload to your shiny new 1490 wink

It seems to remove any POI's on the unit, the uploads the selected ones. Took me a few minutes to get that figured out

Welcome

This should be a good site to check in, got all your GPS related needs.
