POI Loader Inoperable

Help!
When I try to open up the POI Loader, a window pops up for the WinZip Self-Extractor and says the following:
"Unable to create a temporary folder to extract to. Possible Cause: you do not have proper permission to create files or folders in your temporary folder. See you system or network administrator."

I was able to use it a couple of days ago to move pois to my garmin gps. I hope there is someone out there who is more computer savy than I am and can tell me what's wrong. Thanks in advance.

A Little More Info Needed, Please

Are you saying that you already have the POI Loader program installed and this happens when you try to run the program?

You mention the WinZip Self-Extractor which sounds like you are trying to initally install the program - yes/no?

If you were able to use it a couple days ago, why does it sound like you are trying to install the program a second time?

We need a little more info, please. smile

What is your PC's operating system - WinXP, Vista, Win7, or are you using a Mac?

WinZip Self-Extractor

Thanks for answering my post Gary. I have used this program (POI Loader) for about a year now with no problems. All of a sudden when I go to click on the POI Loader icon the error message come up. I am using Windows XP. Never had problems before. I'm scratching my head!

Hmmm...

OK, so you've had the POI Loader program installed for some time. When I click on Start>All Programs and navigate to the shortcut for POI Loader and look at the Properties, it points to C:\Garmin\PoiLoader.exe which is the executable program file. Is that where your POI Loader shortcut icon points?

The fact that your getting a WinZip Self-Extractor message seems like the program shortcut is pointing to the original zipped download file. Either that, or a new shortcut got accidentally created pointing to a different file.

It's Gone

When I go into the Garmin folder, the POI Loader program is gone. The Web Updater program is there and the target is: C:\Garmin\WebUpdater.exe. Should the POI Loader be in the same Garmin folder? I tried downloading again from Garmin, but it doesn't seem to work. I'm confused!!!!!!!

loader problem

go to control panel and remove poi loader program. it should clear registry of this program then try reinstall. did you install any other programs just before this happened? another program could have overwritten a file that you require

don't ya hate it when that happens?

smile I know, its not funny when something like this happens.

I think the quickest way for you to recover from who-knows-what-happened, is to uninstall both POI Loader and WebUpdater from the Windows Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and re-install both.

You can download WebUpdater from here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

And POI Loader from here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99...

POI Loader

Earlier editions of POI Loader used to reside in \Program Files\Garmin. Open Windows Explorer and search for POILoader.exe and see if it is there. If it is, you may need to log onto your computer as Admin and reinstall allowing all users to access the program.

Still Doesn't Work

The poi loader was uninstalled in control panel. WebUpdater is not listed in "ADD/REMOVE Programs, but is in the Garmin folder in "all programs". Looks to me it is part of the Mapsource software, so I don't want to delete that, do I? I tried to download POI Loader again from Garmin and I get the same error message as I got originally. I am logged in as administrator. Got to go out for a couple of hours now to clear my head. Thanks

more things to try

WebUpdater - I have this installed on 2 PCs, so I checked the Add/Remove program list on both and guess what? On one PC I had an entry for WebUpdater and on the other I did not. shock Don't ask... I have no idea how, what or why. The program itself worked on both PCs. So On the PC that did NOT have it in the Add/Remove list, I simply reinstalled WebUpdater using the original installation file I had downloaded months ago. It installed without problem, the WebUpdater program still worked and now it was included in the Add/Remove program list. confused (I have no clue.) arrow So I would recommend you simply install WebUpdater again without bothering to even try uninstalling it first. (and yes, it is in a subfolder under the parent folder where MapSource gets installed, but WebUpdater is not "part of" MapSource, they just share tha same parent folder)

POI Loader - This one is a little tougher. You already stated you're logged into WinXP with administrator privledges. Do you have the WinZip program installed on your PC? Does it start and work correctly? Can you open and create zip files? Can you make your own zip file, convert it to a self-extracting .exe file and if executed, does it self extract? There also could be a problem with the Windows temp (tmp) folder. A last resort might be some piece of malware has gotten onto your PC.

WinZip

I can't seem to find the winzip program on my pc. I tried downloading winzip but it wouldn't let me open it. Got same error mesage as before. I'm stumped.

Something on your pc

Something on your PC is causing the problem. If you Google the phrase winzip unable to create a temporary folder, you will get several hits. I'm afraid you're just going to have go through each suggestion to find the source of the problem. sad

You could try

Restore to an earlier point, try 4-6 weeks ago, or earlier. See if it works with old restore point. Oh yeah, make sure you move recently saved files to c drive or you may loose them. If you can't restore to an old point something has got your computer.

Everything Working Now

Thanks guys for your help. I tried to restore to an earlier point and couldn't do it. I dumped all my temporary files on my hard drive and that seemed do it. Everything is now working fine. grin

Good Deal!

Glad you got it resolved. grin I sometimes forget to think about mentioning cleaning out the temp files.

I've used CCleaner for so long, I take it for granted, I guess.

Me too. I use CCleaner after every session. Windows XP seem to create a multitude of temp files.

nuvi 855. Life is not fair. I don't care who told you it is.

What I do

Comcast provides McAffe Security to its customers. This version has temp file, registry file and several other clean-up searches. Best yet it performs multi-layer erase and allows security scrubbing erase. It also has performs defrag.

I like the program alot.
