Question (filename keywords)

I was reading this thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21316 regarding the "keywords" used in files for custom POIs and I was wondering if there is a full compilation of all keywords available and what they do.

I see there is an individual "distance" keyword that works for gpx files, but not for csv. Did anyone find a keyword that sets individual distances in a csv? My 260w plugs gpx files in the favorites file, which is not what I want to do. I want to create a custom POI file with different distances, similar to a "place@35" speed file. Can it be done? or is it something that requires a gpi file? (here is hoping for turboccc to finish his new program)

Alerts

This is from Poiloader help.

POI Loader loads all .csv and .gpx data files saved in a particular directory. When creating or downloading Custom POI data files, it is recommended that you save all the data files you want to upload to your device in the same directory.

POI Loader determines whether or not a file contains speed and proximity alert points based on specific criteria. Use the following information to help you create Custom POI files:

If a file name contains a valid speed number or if all records in a file have speed encoded in the name, then all records in the file will include speed and proximity alerts. For example, a data file with the file name "Speed_30" generates speed alerts of 30 mph (or kph, depending on the type of units selected in POI Loader) for each POI in the file.

If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles.

If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," but does not have a speed, POI Loader uses a default alert speed of 0, which means you will always be alerted. You can override this default value by entering the speed in Manual mode.

You can also enter speeds for each POI individually by adding the @ symbol and a number after the name of the POI. For example, a Custom POI named "Ridgeview@25" would create a POI named "Ridgeview" with a 25 mph speed alert.

POI Loader calculates proximity alert distance based on speed. Prompt Distance = 36 seconds * Speed.

You can enter proximity alert distance for individual Custom POIs in a .gpx file. You can also enter proximity alert distance for all Custom POIs in a data file using Manual mode.

Thanks for the info

Thanks charlesd45. I guess what I want to do can't be done unless it is a gpx file (implies new nuvi razz )

Yes you can put key words in

Yes you can put key words in the title name for csv and also the speed @35 for example in name or a individual waypoint. All the key words in the name of the custom oi file will give you 1/4 mile alert. Also TourGuide will do the same thing as a key word except you get the radius alert.

Do you use POI Loader?

Can you use POI Loader with your current Nuvi?

POI Loader accepts both csv and gpx files.

Here is something else you

Here is something else you can do.I got the information from the post listed and all the credit goes to Hornbyp for the information. Not sure what happen to him but he sure provided lots of good information for the site.

Outline for TourGuide alerts using express mode with csv files.

1.Tour Guides are not speed-related.
2.Minimum distance is ¼ mile the maximum is 1.25miles.
3.25 =1/4 mile and 124=1.25 miles.
4.You can set different Proximities for each POI using the @speed syntax
or you can put the digits in the file name.
5.You will need an .mp3 or wav file. It must be named the same as the csv file except for the extensions.
6.Whenever you're within the proximity circle, you'll will have TourGuide:
banner on the top of the screen.
7.Examples
8.a. Sonny’s TourGuide 25.csv
9.b. Sonny’s TourGuide 25.wav or mp3=1/4 mile radius
10.c. Rest areas TourGuide 124.csv
11.d. Rest areas TourGuide 124.wav or mp3=1 1/4 mile radius.

File can be loaded in express mode and still get the alert.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/7043 for more information.

I haven't tried tour guides

I don't know if my nuvi supports them, but I'll give that a shot. What I'm trying to do is setup 1 POI file with different distances to automate the process (don't want to do manual, getting lazy). It would be easier if there was a distance command like the @speed that can be put in a csv. My 260w puts gpx files in the favorites and that's not acceptable.

Right now I have different POIs for places where I need a distance warning, and I am trying to get them all in 1 file but preserve the different distance warnings.

If I can't get this to work with distance, I guess I'll have to do speed, although it is more difficult in the sense that locating the "recommended" speed for certain turns is going to be difficult in Mapsource. My custom POIs all involve dangerous turns I frequent in my driving. Useful when I'm tired, at night and in bad weather, as I know where the nasty turns are in advance. Easy to spot in Mapquest when I load my driving log.

Yes, but gpx comes into my favorites, which I don't want to do and csv doesn't have a distance command that you can put in the csv, like you can with speed.

With speed you can have place_a@35, place_b@45, etc. There is no distance equivalent that I know of, unless someone knows a command and wants to share? grin

Alerts

Not sure I understand why gpx file goes to favorite. They load with poiloader the same way.I load all my alert files to Extra Poi Editor using this process http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28521 that way I can use express mode for poiloader. When you look at the replace all field. You will see lots of selections that you can use to replace all at one time.

Edit. The speed cameras on site have the same thing you are talking about.I took EPE and open the speed cameras in it.Using the replace all set a proximity distance. The result is that I have both the distance and the speed.Could have use the replace all and selected speed and leave the New Field value blank and would be left with just the distance.

.

GPX files need to be compiled into gpi files with POILoader just like csv, if you want them to go to Custom POIs.

If you put a gpx file directly in your unit's gpx folder they will load into Favorites. At least that's how my 765T, 295W, and 200W act.

I must have messed up somehow the last time I tried then. I'll backup my favorites just in case and try that again. Somehow all the POIs ended up as blue flags in my map and set in the favorites. Didn't like that. I rather have the one file with different distances built in.

Also check where POI Loader is storing the file. It may be going to the GPX folder and not the POI folder.

Illiterate? Write for free help.

extra poi editor

use the editor to set speed distance etc. it has a lot of options which you can customize, save in which format you like then load it with the loader

gPX

By chance are you putting the gpx files on a sd card instead of loading them to the sd card using poiloader.

If you have

If you are putting another gpx file in the same folder as current.gpx then it will add the new gpx file (custom pois) to favorites.

Aha! I think this may have happened. I'm going to experiment a bit and report back smile

After

After thinking about it a bit .. I remember that MapSource (and maybe BaseCamp?) does that when you send to the device rather than the computer. It will call the gpx file Temp.gpx and put it into the Garmin/Gpx folder and then the waypoints go in as Favorites.

If you save the file to the computer first and then run it through POILoader, it becomes a .gpi file and the points go in under Extras/Custom POIs.

(no, I didn't stay up this late thinking about it smile .. my elderly father-in-law woke me up surprised )

You are right

I did it a long while ago, when I hadn't learned as much as I know now thanks to this forum. That must have been why the gpx ended up in my favorites.

I just finished doing my "experiment", and I'm happy to say that it worked. I added a "test" file with pois with different alert distances and it worked in the simulation. POI loader read it with an alert distance of "0" but the warning custom sounds came up at the right distances I set in Mapsource. I guess I won't be using csv anymore for my custom pois. Next experiment will be to mix different alert distances AND speeds grin
