updating maps on nuvi 200

I am trying to update the maps on my daughter in law's nuvi 200.

I could not download the updated map to the nuvi, because it does not have enough space. I did download the new maps, and mapsource and mapinstall are now on her pc.

But I still can't install the new maps on the nuvi, using mapinstall, because of the old maps still on the nuvi. I have just added a 2 GB SD card.

Should I delete the old maps off the nuvi, then use mapinstall to install part of the maps on the nuvi, and the rest on the sd card? Or should I install ALL the new maps on the SD card, and then delete the old maps from the nuvi?

backup before deleting anything...

Be on the safe side and backup the old maps before deleting anything from the nuvi. The maps are in a file named gmapprom.img on the nuvi drive. Backup this file to another folder/drive elsewhere on your PC before adding the new maps to the unit or SD Card. After it's backed up, then delete it. Map updates have been known to go wrong periodically (the map update installer can be at fault as well as the user).

The entire 2011.30 (newest) mapset will never fit on the 200's internal memory as you've seen. If you have the full 2 GB SD Card to use, I would install the entire mapset onto the SD card, verify that it works, then delete the old map from the nuvi. Having a partial nuvi/SD Card install may end up being more confusing later on when update time rolls around again.

I own a 200W and I'm one of

I own a 200W and I'm one of those that splits the maps between internal memory and the SD Card. While I personally prefer to do it that way, for most people I would recommend doing what DorkusNimrod says and load the entire map on the SD card. It's simply much easier that way.

The only caveat you need to let your daughter-in-law know is that it will take the 200 a bit longer to boot because it has to read from the SD card, which is a bit slower.

Here's Another Way

If you connect your GPS to your computer and look at the GPS through the File Manager (or My Computer), you'll see a directory structure on the GPS. There is a "Garmin" folder that has sub-folders called "Help", "Text" and "Voice" (among others). IF you only use the English language, you can delete all the other files in those directories. Note: the Voice files are the biggest and take up the most space.

I have the maps of all of North America loaded onto a 200W. The SD card has ONLY my POI files on it.

As someone else said, backup the directory to your computer's hard drive before deleting anything.

If you managed to fit all of

If you managed to fit all of North America on a nuvi 200, then you likely don't have a 200 from 2008, but one of the rebadged 205s that Garmin sold for Christmas last year. I that isn't the case, then you somehow either added internal memory to the unit (difficult but not impossible) or you have a 250.

The 2008 vintage 200s only had enough room on them to fit the continental US internally whereas the 250 could fit all of North America. To add anything else required a SD Card. Since the 2010 maps, there has not been enough room, even by deleting unused language files, to load the entire continental US internally on a 200.

I have all of North America on my 2008 vintage 200W, but I have to load Canada, Mexico, Alaska, and the states of Washington, Oregon, and California on the SD card in order to get the whole thing to fit.

P.S. I forgot to mention that I have other maps loaded on there as well...
- US Rec. Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots

- osm map
- usa
- NE USA Topo Part(s) 1 & 3
- IbycusUSA2
- IbycusUSA

Two quick questions: 1.

Two quick questions:

1. Where are the + and - buttons located in the map viewer?
2. What version number is your firmware?

The fact you have 2GB of memory has me 99.9% convinced that you have a new 200W, or what I refer to as a 205W wearing a 200W case. Knowing where the buttons are placed on the map viewer and what version the firmware is will eliminate any uncertainty that may remain.

In any case, I would have rather had a 250W or 260W since both of those have enough memory for the whole of North America, but I can't complain given that I got my 200W for $25 from a coworker.

1. on the top left & right corners of the screen.

2. From the ABOUT button:
Software Version 4.00
Audio Version: 2.20
GPS SW Version: 2.80m

From the "Hidden screens" (press the battery indicator for 10+ seconds).
SW Ver 4.00
Version Information: n2 S V2 2GB

I believe I have updated the firmware in the past.

Yours is indeed a later unit

Yours is indeed a later unit (mainly because you had 2009 maps to begin with where I had 2008), but it's not a 205W in a 200W casing. I apologize for making that particular assumption.

Here's the information from mine.

Software Version 4.00
Audio Version: 2.30
GPS SW Version: 3.00s

The copyright notice at the bottom of the about screen is ©2007.

From the "Hidden screens".
SW Ver 4.00
Version Information: n2 S V4 1GB SIRF

Version 4.00 is the last firmware released for the 200W. If yours was a 200W with 205W guts it would have the updated interface (+ and - buttons on right) and the software version would be somewhere around 7.00.

I learned something new today. Thank you. smile
